Customer Reviews

I always enjoy it when a movie uses great music to help ...I always enjoy it when a movie uses great music to help motivate the plot, add the mood the director was trying to create. This sound track is one that definitely took a so-so movie to something fun and interesting to watch. The Beatle's music in this sound track did not loose any of it's original quality. As a matter of personal opinion, I feel their songs were presented in a more emotional way as I believe the Beatle's had meant their songs to be. Of course, it is important to see the movie to appreciate what I am saying. You cannot go wrong with this album. It is another way to perform that great groups addition to the history of music. I feel in most cases, these renditions are better than the originals.5Very good, but you might not like how....these versions differ from the actual ones used in the film. The vocals were all filmed live, so there are many songs here that dont' match up to what you see in the film exactly. Most significant is Dear Prudence, which has a totally different rhythm than the version in the film.BUT...aside from being a little disappointed at the absence of Paul's bouncy, walking bass line in All My Lovin', I really enjoyed these renditions of these great songs. I do tend to be a bit of a Beatles Purist, and don't like anyone messing with the perfection the Fab Four achieved, but I just loved this film. Besides totally falling in love with Jim Sturgess, who also eerily reminded me of an ex, I enjoyed Julie Taymor's vision, imagery and symbolism. She did a fabulous job showing the chaos of the times, and how the Beatles' music reflected what was going on then, and how their music changed as the times changed, from the stripped down innocence of Hold Me Tight and It Won't Be Long, to the complexity and the layers of Strawberry Fields Forever, Helter Skelter and the song that inspired the title, the plaintive chorus, "Nothing's gonna change my world" playing while Max's stunned, glazed over eyes survey the carnage in Viet Nam, realizing all their worlds have been irrepairably changed forever. You hear a great deal more in these songs after seeing the movie, and the soundtrack recalls that. The soundtrack brings back the best parts of the movie, and does put a very fresh and refreshing spin on, while paying homage to, this great music.4Across the UniverseI must say the production of movie and soundtrack came as close to perfection as possible for the four guysfrom Liverpool who took others and I out of perhaps the worst depression I and likely the USA at the time when our belovedPresident J F Kennedy was murdered. But this concerns the movie "Across the Universe" and the soundtrack, this movie dropped a few tears on my cheek. I enjoyed it, I believe the producer, director nailed it concerning all/every aspect of the times, and adding visualization to the audio songs which I must say one of the finest Beatle productions I've viewed. In and w/every song, I could figured the lyrics symbolically speaking except, "She's so Heavy",When I saw the characters/robotic soldiers carrying the "Statue of Liberty." It dawned on me,such genius's, I'd never figured that is what was meant. The characters, producers, directors, the choreography, really put movie and soundtrack so well that perhaps even the Beatles could be proud of.Words can or cannot praise this production as it should be honored.Really and Sincerely,~Mickey Moretti5Strangely appealingThis soundtrack to the film of the same name is odd. Typical for a project like this, it's uneven. It features all kinds of people singing all kinds of Beatles songs from every era of the band's career. Some songs/performances work better than others. Yet even the lesser attempts are enjoyable. Take Eddie Izzard's "Mr. Kite" - clearly tossed off in one take (I mean I wasn't there, maybe not). it's a fun and funny because as the Brits say he "takes the piss out of it". I suspect John Lennon would've had a good laugh listening to it. Highlights include "Let it Be" sung by Carol Woods with a gospel feel and Dana Fuch's "Helter Skelter". If you enjoy brave attempts at singing songs from the most sacred songbook of the 20th century - take a chance on this...you might like it. (There's a single disc/mp3 version that focuses on the better known tracks if this seems like overkill.)4Fragile.Listen, this soundtrack is amazing. It just is. The quality of the actual discs is different. The very first time I tried to get one of the discs out to play, it snapped. As someone who drives a 2001 vehicle and uses CDs everyday, this shouldn't have happened. I've never had this issue before. Tried to get the other disc out, and sure enough, cracked it. That one still plays but the other is totally split in two down one side. I wasn't rough or impatient trying to get it out. It just wouldn't come out peacefully. I've ordered a new one so hopefully this one was just a bad one. Also my discs we're labeled wrong. The songs for disc 2 are on disc 1 and vice versa.3Waves of JoyThe first single-disc edition of the soundtrack had 16 tracks, 6 from the first deluxe disc and 10 from the second. This is an extremely engaging soundtrack for those who saw the film and love the Beatles' music. Joe Cocker's version of "Come Together" blasts relentlessly with his vocal swagger putting an emotional payload on Lennon's obscure lyric, "He wear no shoe shine, he got toe jam football, he got monkey finger, he shoot coca cola." Evan Rachel Wood sounds like she's having a blast on "It Won't Be Long." She makes it sound fresh, "Since you left me, I'm so alone; Now you're coming on home." T.V. Caprio's "I Want to Hold Your Hand" aches emotionally with the familiar throbbing bass line putting a chronic smile on my face. The Dana Fuchs Band with Rachel Evan Wood does my favorite track on the CD, the breezy "Because" with gorgeous vocal harmonies, "Because the wind is high, it blows my mind." Jim Sturgess' take on the John Lennon's title track is excellent with its sense of spiritual exploration and longing, "Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind, possessing and caressing me." Dana Fuchs Band blows away the under-appreciated "Don't Let Me Down" with a powerful emotional wallop. The deluxe version of the soundtrack takes great material from Lennon, McCartney & Harrison and produces one of the best celebrations of their work. Enjoy!5All You Need Is Love - and THIS!I'd just become aware of this movie a few months ago from an ex-girlfriend. Where was I when this came out? This is one of my very favorite movies now - the use of Beatles songs to tell a love story, with minimal dialogue (brilliant)...THIS CD is the one to buy, not the watered down single disc. While this doesn't have every morsel of sound, it hits almost all the high notes (no pun intended). These are the songs as you heard them in the movie by the cast and guests (Bono, Joe Cocker, etc.). Just...epic.521st Century ZealWho would've thought the Beatles would be revived in the 21st century with a double disc album with a large cast of musical unknowns - and more importantly, with their music legacy and sound kept intact? This really is an epic task - when one considers the quality of the work. Covering the Beatles may seem easy, but to do it well is anything but.A caveat - soundtracks absolutely work best when you remember the movies. And people who buy this album should really watch the movie for the visual experience first. It forges a new chapter in Beatles history - if just a relatively small step for the new generation. There isn't much of a note or interpretation out of place here. What works is the blend of voices and styles - from the young (Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Woods), to black gospel (Carol Woods / Timothy Mitchum), to the seasoned rocker (Joe Cocker) to r & b (the amazing Martin Luther McCoy)It's a little melancholy for me when one considers that the Beatles are no longer with us but what a legacy.Note: get the 2 disc edition - not the very unsatisfying single disc edition which I got and now have to give away!4Great from start to finishThese are great renditions of classic Beatles songs. I am a Beatles fan despite growing up in the 80's and 90's, and this movie and soundtrack have really done John, Paul, George and Ringo proud. They have effectively ushered these songs into the twenty first century for a new generation to enjoy.Songs from the Beatles' early days, such as, "I want to hold your hand" and "All my loving" especially benefit from an updating that tones down a bee-bop doo-whop sound that people now just in their twenties and thirties will never understand. No fault to the Beatles, they were just victims of the time period. As someone who grew up on musicals like "Annie" and "Grease", it's great to see a new musical after many years geared to adults in movie format that somehow manages to avoid being totally corny. This is a great collection of songs that I will be sure to enjoy for years to come...alongside the incomparable originals, of course!Of course the purists aren't going to like these covers, that goes without saying. I am not sure why such an individual would even leave a review here, except for the opportunity to complain. Bottom line is that it's an inspired and creative album, period.I saw that one reviewer claimed it is sinful to remake Beatle's tunes. If Paul and Ringo themselves don't mind, (which they don't, they both praised the film), then it shouldn't bother anyone else either.5Excellent soundtrack from a great movieYeah the critics didn't care much for the film, but I thought it was great. It brought back a lot of memories from the time, and the Beatles songs were VERY well done. I am so glad the producers were able to get the rights to the music that made this film possible. The soundtrack is faithful to the movie, except for two that are missing...a medley of sorts - I Want You She's So Heavy - Joe Anderson - is missing! It's not on any of the other versions of the soundtrack release either. In fact, this particular version I purchased has more of the songs from the movie than any of the other versions available. Right on - right on - right on.5
