Description

Product Description The first of its kind, charged with joy, and graced with angelic blend of voices, this new release captures in song the spirit of hope and expectation of Advent. This unique CD is recorded by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles: a young, monastic order of Sisters located in rural Missouri, dedicated to prayer for priests. Advent at Ephesus includes an amazing variety of traditional Latin and English hymns, polyphony, Gregorian Chant, medieval harmonies and an original piece to prayerfully lead you through the sacred season in preparation for Christmas. Advent is perhaps the most neglected season, but remains one of the most treasured by the sisters here at the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus. The Liturgical year has reached its dramatic close with the Feast of Christ the King and a series of meditations on the Last Judgment. While lamps remain lit in our hearts for the final coming of the Lord, (track 14) a milder tenor creeps into the voice of the Church as Advent begins a new year, and attention is also given to the coming of the Infant Christ into the world (tracks 1, 6, and 13.) The Annunciation (tracks 3, 5 and 8) the cry of the Baptist (track 12) and the expectation of Our Lady (tracks 11, 16, and 17) are all leitmotifs that repeatedly occur in the chants and the Divine Office. The nightly antiphon to Our Lady changes from the familiar Salve Regina to the gentle Alma Redemptoris Mater, honoring her motherhood (tracks 2, 15.) A bold, melancholy tone of impatience is joined to those of the prophets and chosen people who waited for the Lords coming for centuries (tracks 7, 9.) Yet there also remains a sustained strain of gaudium, the interior joy characteristic of Advent that lends its name to the Third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday. (Track 10, Offertory of Gaudete Sunday.) The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles is a monastic community located in rural Missouri. Consecrated to the Queen of Apostles, their lives are dedicated to contemplative prayer especially for priests. They support themselves primarily by making priestly vestments. Professing obedience to the Churchs teaching, the community upholds a loving commitment to preserving the liturgical heritage of the Church in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass and traditional monastic Office. This is their first recording with de Montfort Music and Decca records. Review The life of a priest is an Advent bringing forth the Incarnation in souls, Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity once said. So our prayers are united in a special way to priests, those commissioned to bring the Body of Christ down to earth and upon our altars each day. May Our Lady keep you all close to her heart this season, and thus also close to the heart of the King Who is to come. We pray that we all await with her the vision of His most Holy Face this approaching Christmastide. --The Sisters

Customer Reviews

Heavenly InterludeI stumbled upon this while looking for some Georgian chants and thought it would be interesting to try some female vocals. I listen to this while driving all the time in December. It really relaxes me and I blast it so that their voices are ringing all around me.This is what keeps me centered amid all the people who seem to go crazy during the holiday season and haven't learned how to enjoy it. It feels like little angels are released each time you play this. I also have their carol CD but while it is good it is not quite the same quality as this one. With the exception of "O Come Emmanuel" I do not recognize any of the other choices (but then maybe I would if I were Catholic) so I can listen to this anytime of the year and just appreciate the beauty of the music. I also like to listen to it with a "glass" of something while working on jigsaw puzzles. They appear to be a lovely collection of women and I wish them much success! And keep the CDs coming please!5When nuns sing...they're not the Robert Shaw Chorale, ok? But the "Ephesus" nuns from St. Louis sing pretty well, and the concentration on ADVENT songs fills a serious gap.4Nice job, LadiesThe reviews are practically universal for this music, and rightly so. However, one critic does complain that this collection, is not a good representation of the correct way to sing chant." I don't understand why one would expect the music to be something that it is not. These are not chants. Rather, these are hymns, sung a cappella in both Latin and English. By their nature, hymns have meter and melody. When a very good female schola sings Advent hymns, this is the result.I play in the home a mix of choral, polyphony, instrumental and chant during Advent, and this was a beautiful addition to the mix. The simple reverent tone is a nice contrast to the highly produced choral renderings of the same hymns that were already in my Advent playlist. "Oh Come Divine Messiah" from Advent at Ephesus is the only sung version I possess of my family's favorite Advent hymn, and everyone sings along when it's played. This is a must-have for your Advent collection. If you don't have an Advent collection, Advent at Ephesus is an excellent start on one.5Gorgeous harmoniesI had heard a piece from this album on MPR and knew I wanted to hear more. Ordered it and it has become one of my very favorite albums to listen to. There's just a beautiful "feeling" that comes through this singing. It's quiet, the voices blend so beautifully and the result for me is a very relaxing listen. This is not Christmas music although there is one Christmas carol on it. Especially in the dark cold winters here in MN, this is just a lovely, lovely piece to listen to. I highly recommend it if you like 4-part harmony and sacred music.5Gorgeous, Clear RenditionI was a bit surprised at first by the number and high ratings of the reviews for this recording, given that this isn't an offering from one of the "superstars" of the sacred music genre (if you'll pardon the expression). I had never heard of this group of sisters but bought the download based solely on the reviews I read. As others have mentioned, the subject of the song selection is a refreshing surprise but that is not the best part by far.Where this album really shines is a combination of two areas: This offering has a truly excellent recording quality and acoustics in the environment they chose and this group's collective voice is unusually delicate and clear - smoothly and perfectly harmonized. There is not a hint of discordance or a strident or harsh note to be found, even on the highest registers. The result, to me, is the aural equivalent of warm chocolate. You can close your eyes and almost feel like you are in a cathedral with them, listening to their voices wind around and through, uplifting each other.Overall, these songs are serene and peaceful without being boring and the closest other recording I can draw an equivalent to is Stile Antico's "Music for Compline". Definitely one of the highest quality offerings I have bought in a long time, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what they come up with for their next album.5Uniquely beautiful music especially for Advent - at long last!God bless these Sisters, my sisters and friends! I was a part of this religious community for a year of discernment and am overjoyed that their musical ability has found wider audience now. This Advent music is some of my favorite music of all, and for me it brings back many happy memories of life in the convent there too. But I guarantee that anyone who is looking for something new to listen to for this Advent season will be just as happy about hearing it. :)And, when Christmas has arrived, you can just switch to their previous CD: "Christmas at Ephesus" (available on their website, it was self-published)The Benedictines of Mary are a newer Catholic religious order of contemplative nuns, traditional in their faith and joyful in their life - and YOUNG. When I entered the convent I was one of the older sisters... at 28. :) They recently were able to move "back to the land" and are working towards building a self-sustaining rural monastery in Missouri, but they are in great need of financial assistance to clear the debt on the building they built to live in before they can proceed further. Purchase of this music/CD, and the other three CDs that they self-published before this one ("Echoes of Ephesus", "Christmas at Ephesus", and "Marian Hymns of Ephesus"), will all help to contribute to the practical needs of their growing community - and to the spiritual needs of yourself!Find out more about these sisters at their website benedictinesofmary dot org5The Greatest CD on Planet EarthThis CD is the best, of the best, of the best, and is absolutely wonderful for all year round listening every single day of the year, and is not just for Christmas and other Holy Days, this CD is wonderful to listen to every day of your life. I love this CD. And if tomorrow (another) executive order was issued stating that Catholics/Christians would only be allowed to have one Catholic/Christian CD in their homes due to reasons of national security, Advent At Ephesus by The Benedictines of Mary, Queen Of Angels would be my choice. This CD is amazing and you will love it.5Fruit of the SpiritThis is such a unique offering for use in celebrating the Advent season. You will find peace and joy in this collection. It is the most lovely music, vocalized from pure hearts, and truly sets the stage for this time of celebrating the expectation and arrival of the One who is most holy and righteous. You will be utterly pleased to have this CD playing in your home for this Christmas season and all to come. For those who are not Catholic, consider this CD a true gift from our sisters in Christ who have wisely used their talents to bring the focus on Jesus.5Breathtakingly beautifulI just received my copy of Advent at Ephesus today, and it was just as beautiful as I'd expected. There is such a shortage of Advent music. What a joy to have such a lovely variety, from Chant to Polyphony to a piece just recently written. The entire album is a capella, which lends itself to meditative mood, but there is so much joyful anticipation of the Christmas season that it is also just enjoyable to listen to. Although I loved both the familiar and less familiar Advent melodies, my very favorite was the original work by the Benedictines of Mary, "Adjuvabit Eam". It is also nice to know that in buying this CD, you not only get fantastic music, but you support a young, growing order of traditional Catholic sisters. I'm already looking forward to their next album.5Peaceful, Heavenly and InspirationalI am so pleased and blessed by this amazing recording. I feel as if I am in the monastery myself when I listen to the singing. I had ordered three of these...one for myself, a friend and one for the Novices at the Carmelite Sisters in Germantown, NY (my daughter is one of them). Today I decided to get two more...one for another friend and one for my newly ordained priest. God bless these dear Sisters for letting us share in their worship.5
