Customer Reviews

Didn't realize what I was missingI bought this sort of on a whim a few months ago. I figured if it wasn't worth it, I could always return it.As a designer I've rarely had to use a light box, I mostly use paper that is translucent enough to see what I'm tracing over (for example when I have a croquis page under my sketch page, I can see the body outline clearly enough to draw my designs on top without a problem). I also have a tendency to hoard scrap paper. I think many companies waste a lot of good paper because most people print something only to look at it once and throw it out. Some of the paper I've saved have full pictures printed on the fronts, which makes it near impossible to see the outline of a croquis through it in order to draw on the back. This light pad works amazingly. I was able to sketch hours at a time, going through my piles of scrap paper and without straining my eyes. Strangely enough.. the static(?) keeps the bottom paper that I'm referencing in place, so I haven't really had need for tape or anything. But I'm drawing quick sketches rather than fine line work so this may be a problem for some people. Now you might think a regular light box should work just as well. Not true. I have one in my office, and compared to this sleek pad, the box just felt awkward to draw on. Gone was the ease in which I could place my figure, place scrap paper on top, do a quick sketch, and change out paper with an almost assembly line type flow. Plus the light box is not as bright as this art pad (huge difference when drawing through printed on scrap paper like I do). It's easy to carry around, about the weight of a laptop. I take it to cafes and sit in a corner with an outlet drawing away. Which leads me to the only problem I have with this light pad and it is that you're tethered to an outlet. A quick search tells me that there are battery add ons to go wireless, so it's not a big deal and doesn't affect my opinion on the rating. 5Great drawing tool - get one - you won't regret it!This is really a quality light pad with all the features to make it a dream to work on. The dimming feature provides comfort for the eyes which becomes more and more important as we age. Additionally, if you are like me and work later in the evening it is possible to dim it down so I can get to sleep at a reasonable time (I won't say what that time that is!!! LOL). Actually brightening or dimming it down and changing the light temperature helps me see various parts of what I am drawing better.I used it to copy a drawing on the Strathmore 300 series bristol vellum. The Artograph lightpad pro 1200 was bright enough to draw directly on another sheet of the same paper in order to make changes for my next improved version of the drawing. I didn't even have to photocopy the previous picture on the thinner paper or start all over and measure!!!! What a time saver!!!I love the size. It is perfect to sit with my legs up and put a pillow under the light pad on my legs and the end in my lap to draw. I can lean back to support my head and so that my neck and shoulders do not get sore from drawing.I think that the ability to change the color temperatures will be invaluable when I start drawing in color or on tinted papers. Since I want to learn more about drawing in perspective, I can hardly wait to get my straight edge going on this drawing surface!!!I used to do commercial calligraphy and teach it and I wish I would have had this for my writing line layouts. It is so light and easy to handle. The customer service is A+. I needed some help and talked with a real person who knew what he was talking about. He was easy to talk with and understanding. He quickly and generously solved the problem.Mine came with 2 pad pucks and a special cloth to keep the surface of the Light pad polished.Overall, I can't think of any cons. It is solid quality and works really well. It just makes a part of drawing that can seem somewhat tedious at times much faster and more fun!!!Extra Accessories:I also really like the Artograph lightpad storage bag for this. It is padded and has zipper pouches on the outside for the power cord and the pad. It has plenty of room for pad pucks (which do really work) and for extra stuff. (plenty of room for pencils, erasers, sharpeners, and so forth.) It also has a large separated compartment next to the light pad pouch, big enough for a pad of paper, (my11x14" went in with generous room to spare, it looks like the 14 x17" pads would fit in there also.). The lightpad pouch even has a velcro strap to keep the pad from accidentally sliding out. Further, there is a large zippered compartment on the back of the bag for even more storage. The handle straps are very comfortable and there is a long shoulder strap option too. The light pad itself is not heavy so I don't mind adding extra stuff. For me this is worth getting since I do not have a dedicated place to put my lightpad and leave it ready for drawing all the time. Of course, it will be great to take on trips too, or if I will need to use it to work with future clients at their workplace. 5I ordered this for my wife to use with her ...I ordered this for my wife to use with her quilting projects. Much to our surprise straight out of the box it did not work at all. Wouldn't even turn on! 1Do Not Buy This LightboxIt would not turn on!!! Seriously this should have been tested before leaving the seller!!! DO NOT BUY!!!Hate having to give this product one star 1Even light distributionI bought this primarily for building a film negative "scanner" using my Sony A65V digital camera for digitizing old film negatives. The camera will be held above the light box pointing straight down from a home-built wooden frame that will stand next to this light box. I also purchased two sheets of optically clear acrylic, one square foot each with one sheet being 1/4" thick and the second sheet being 1/8" thick from McMaster-Carr (stock number 8560K354 and 8560K239 respectively) along with a "Super-soft Silicone Rubber 1/32" Thick, 1/2" Width, 10' Length, 30a Durometer" strip (stock number 8622K51). I'll apply the silicone rubber strip along the perimeter of the light box then set the 1/4" acrylic sheet on top to protect the light box surface from scratches and damage. A film negative will then be placed on top of the 1/4" acrylic sheet and then the 1/8" acrylic sheet will be placed on top of the film to keep it flat. I'll post my results here after I've completed the project. Now I'll comment on the light bed. As the other reviewers have said it is a nice even lighting across the entire work area - critical for photography. It seems to be a natural "cool" white rather than a "warm" white but have no idea what the color temperature is since it is not specified. But comparing it to two types of LED flood lights in our home it seems to be very close to the cool white which does not have the warm yellowish tinge. Should be good for true color reproduction in my photographs. It is bright but that's a relative term - obviously it not bright like the 11 Watt LED flood lights in our kitchen - but it is MUCH brighter than the brightness of a good LED monitor showing an all-white screen. It is nice and thin but yet feels very sturdy. So far I have no complaints and I'll follow this up once I've had my photography setup finished and have evaluated the results. 5Love this and the carry case I bought elsewhere. So glad I splurged for a proper light box. This is so thin and easy that I can take it to my watercolor class. It makes transferring my sketches so much easier. No more messy graphite paper. 5Very gently twist pad to remove bubble.Very bright and can see pretty well through my toned tan paper, the 12 by 9 is just slightly larger than my sketch book so its very easy to get everything I'm looking for. The only issue I had was the power button is on the top of the screen, its not a major issue but I've accidentally turned it on and off from sliding my hand over it. The advertised images show it on the side of the pad, maybe just certain sizes are different. The light on mine will automatically turn on when inserting the power cable regardless if you had it off before. Would still recommend to any fellow artists.---------------------sadly I needed to adjust my review. I've kept the light pad in the cloth case it comes with when ever it's not in use, I now have a spot of light in the middle while the rest of the pad has gone dim. unfortunately it's not even bright enough for me to use that toned tan paper anymore. I haven't been able to use it frequently either or have it plugged in to "blow out" the bulb. I'm not sure why it became that way.----------------------Thanks to Mr.Roger at Artograph's website he offered this advice for those bubbles in the middle."It is unfortunate that your LightPad has this bright spot. We haven t figured out what is causing this yet (may be static) but give the LightPad a twist and it will go away. This is caused be the top viewing acrylic contacting the lightboard underneath it. These LX LightPads have a dimmable light in them. Press and hold on the ON/OFF button to make the LightPad brighter or dimmer." 5Beautiful quality lightboxFor a second hand item, this is beautiful. I could hardly see the scratches. It is a very nice light box also and works perfectly for what I wanted it for. It shipped in a timely manner. Perfect! 5power cord knocks it down two starsThis is the perfect size to put in your backpack. I originally bought the 12"x9" but returned it for a more portable size. Within the last year the power supply cord tore where it's connected to the charger and doesn't work anymore. I took good care of it and feel the cord should not have shredded like that from normal wear and tear. 3Very portable, very bright, new power button is a nuisance.I have the old 9x12 Artograph since college and I still use it today. But I decided to invest in the smaller 6x9 lightpad to take with me on trips. I adore the model being slimmed down! The power cord works as intended. (Hope Artograph makes a new portable battery for this, I'd buy it!) My ONLY issue is the new touch-activated power button. As an artist, my hand is constantly sliding while I draw. Every time I turn the lightpad a different direction to get the best out of my inking, I accidentally touch the power button and it either turns off or starts to dim! The old one was a simple switch on the side that wasn't intrusive at all! It threw off my drawing groove a couple times. *sighs* I wish they had a sliding switch instead. That way they could keep the brightness function. :(Other than that, the new models of lightpads are still the same quality brightness and made even more portable with the slimmer look and feel! REALLY miss the switch on the side but hey I still have my older model that works like a charm. :) 4
