Customer Reviews

Amazing narrativeI enjoyed the game. The plot twists weren't entirely unpredictable, but I really enjoyed the attention to detail, and the reflective foreshadowing is nearly perfect. It's a well written story which appealed to my sci-fi sensibilities. The plot is well crafted for the interactive medium. Many games try to tell a cinematic story, ignoring the interactive elements. Bioshock Infinite successfully uses the agency the player is provided with to create and compelling narrative, and ensures that when our agency is removed, it is for good reason, and flows with the story. It's an incredible example of how to create a narrative in which interaction is used as a true part of the story, rather than as a ludic crutch or gimmick. The first two Bioshock games did this as well, but neither quite as nicely as Infinite has done.I thought the mechanics of the game were among the best designed I've ever encountered. The weapon variety and scarcity was great, and though it occasionally annoyed, it was a really great choice to limit the player to two weapons at a time. It really made me think about which weapons I really needed, and it occasionally forced me to go long stretches without my preferred weapon, when I had to drop it, and use something else due to a lack of ammo. It took me out of my comfort zone for long stretches, and kept me searching. I kept a Carbine and a Sniper rifle for most of the game, but I once had to go for nearly an hour with a repeater and a hand cannon, fruitlessly searching for the weapons I wanted. My sense of relief upon locating each of them was tremendous, "Now I can fight properly again!".I was a little annoyed occasionally by the lack of a save-anywhere, since it occasionally meant I had to lose progress when I wanted to stop playing, but hadn't reached an auto-save point recently, but the death penalties are set up well the way they are. Loosing $50 to respawn was just enough penalty to make me really not want to die, but not so much that dying made me want to go all the way back to the last auto-saveI'm glad that I saw an article before playing which warned to start one's first playthrough on 'Hard'. I usually play on 'normal' assuming that this is the 'intended' gameplay level, but I can see that playing on normal, I would not have needed any sky-hook combat, nor had to worry about any cover (and since those are major, fun mechanics, I would have missed out on a lot). As it was, I only had to lower the difficulty for one fight.5Beautiful game that lacks fun.First, let me clear the record on the download requirements for those of us with data caps. You DO NOT have to download 18 gigs as others have indicated. In fact, you dont have to download anything other than Steam. You do have to have Steam to play the game but updates are optional and not required. Now for the game. I been playing PC games for over 20 years. After all the reviews and hype behind this game I made the call to give it a go. I was willing to download whatever was required based on some inaccurate reviews found here to see just what this was all about. The graphics are beautiful. I would say they are 10 out of 10. Probably the best looking game I have ever seen on the PC. That said, the game play is 6 out of 10 at best. The game is very slow to get started. Even when things pick up a bit that game lacks the fun factor. Crysis and even Half Life 2 left me playing for hours without any regards to time. This game was simply disappointing from the start. I am back to playing TF2 and Crysis without any thoughts of going back to pick up where I left off.I am a big supporter of PC games but this one was a big disappointment for me.3Great Game......one of the best FPS games in recent history! (And I've played the top rated ones... Crysis 3, Metro Last Light, Far Cry 3, etc... even Bioshock 2 a couple months ago, which is also very good) but BI blows them all out of the water! Seamless game-play, absolutely 'zero' glitches or bugs, amazing environment, many game options, weapons, vigors. It is indeed 'linear', but that doesn't affect the effective enjoyment of the game. Held my attention even when I tried to quit for a break... read: hard to quit! Also has a very high 'replay' value... just to use different vigor combinations. I'm very much into quantum physics and cosmology, string theory and 'multiverse' theories, so the ending was terrific! Raised the hairs on my arms! Excellent: highly recommend. (Hmmm... I also lucked out: I waited for the price to come down since it's release, and it did last week for just a day or so to $19. Its back up to near $40 now! He he ;-)REVIEW EDIT... OK... the second time thru is NOT as much fun as the first. It's still a great game, but it IS a repetitive shooter. And as such, the second time thru is a bit boring... not as much fun as my previous review would indicate as having "...very high 'replay' value." Sill leaving it at five stars.5REQUIRES INTERNET for PC version, Masterpiece Game3/4 of way through game now. No glitches that I notice other than Elizabeth occasionally floating, but it's so infrequent that I pay no mind to it. Runs great on my PC which has 8GB ram, solid state hard drive, quad processor. Have only had very little problems with lag in the game. The story, sounds, world, everything, it's amazing. Elizabeth's AI makes me feel like I'm taking this adventure with another living person. Can she see me through the TV screen? She's that real.I'm not a FPS person. I don't like FPS games. I suck at aiming. But this game I love. I don't know why, but I LOVE it.INTERNET WARNING: don't have internet? Don't buy this PC game. It requires that you download steam and have a Steam account, which requires internet. When you install the game your game registration code that comes with your copy will be permanently linked to your Steam account, so don't lose your Steam Account information. You must be able to log in with your Steam account to play the game.If the internet thing is no problem for you, then I absolutely recommend this game. Thinking back, I don't think there was a moment in this game that I did not enjoy. Except maybe that it's odd that you can find more money in trash cans than in purses. Haha!5Good GameYay Bioshock Infinite! Fans of the series had been waiting a few years for this title to come out, and it finally has hit us.I've waited to write a review for this for awhile now... because I wanted the hype to die down. So let me talk about the game real quick...Pros:+ Great Graphics+ Incredible Story / Atmosphere / Music+Solid FPS Mechanics+ Great Variety in Weapons / Tonics+ Solid length time.+ Good variety of enemies / maps.+ Elizebeth isn't useless (Most AI partners are awful, and drag the expierence down.)+ Great PC PortCons- Mechanics are lost from the first reveal.- Upgrade system rewards money collection, rather than explorations- Weapon system doesn't feel like "Bioshock"- PC Port is good, but has some odd configuration issues as a result of changes.I believe the pros are self explanatory... I'd rather talk about the cons. Anyone who followed this game, knows that this game was bizarrely delayed for almost two and a half years from its original release date. Rumors suggest that a lot of content had been reworked. This seems to be true, because before it seemed that Elizebeth tears were supposed to be more dynamic, where as now they are in pre-determined locations. Furthermore the skyhook system comes off as much more of a gimmick than an actual feature in this game. The upgrade system is vastly superior in the original Bioshocks (In my opinion.) In the original series you were rewarded for completing extra puzzles, by getting upgrades. In this, everything is fueled by money. I really believe that upgrades for weapons and tonics could have been done in a much smarter way.The weapon system takes its roots from "Modern shooters." Perhaps its to ensure the player doesn't become to powerful... but it makes upgrading guns less worth it, because you end up sticking with your two favorite and ignore everything else. The PC port was great, but controls wise I had massive issues with how the tonics were binded. You could reconfigure and somewhat customize how you would "put them in your two panels." but it was bizarrely done and it seems it was a hybrid of PC and console controls, which resulted in a lack of polish... making combining elements tedious rather than rewarding...You might be saying... "Why 4/5 if you listed so many frustrating cons." Because in the end, the game is still absolutely incredible. Yes its true, I enjoy the original bioshock mechanics more. On the other hand though, Bioshock infinite is a solid shooter and is a lot of fun, and any bioshock fan will enjoy it. Furthermore it succeeded where many other games have not, by creating an AI that actually works well as your partner. This is further fueled by the great, but confusing story. In the end 4/5 stars, great game that I recommend to anyone but for the hardcore fans you might be a little bit dissapointed.4A good game held back from greatness by it's own overly complicated narrative but nonetheless very engrossing.A very engrossing game but a bit too complicated for it's own good. The "tears"(shifts in time) are so many, you are not sure where(or when) you are and the ending is more of a postscript (again overly complicated) that you can skip although is does reveal who Elizabeth is. The "vigors" are superpowers that give you specific abilities but I found I use only about half of them(shockjockey, an electrocution bolt of electricity, is my favorite). I also wish you could carry more than 2 weapons. The battle scenes are challenging but sometimes feel like they were just added for the sake of another fight. Finding hidden stuff along the way is very fun and money is picked up so you can buy upgrades to your vigors and weapons. Salts power your vigors, you have a "shield" that wears down in battle but regenerates if you are not being hit and your health which suffers once your "shield" is broken. The obviously right wing political world you are fighting in is overturned with you(Booker Dewitt)` and Elizabeth leading the way using these "tears" in time. Your mission of rescuing Elizabeth to bring her back to New York to wipe away your gambling debts becomes more of a mission to help the right wing run world free itself as you become more involved in Columbia, this floating world above the earth where Elizabeth is held captive.4Best game of the trilogyThis is my favourite game of the Bioshock trilogy. The graphics are gorgeous. The world of Columbia is presented in vivid, living colour, departing from the dull colours of the last two games (no brown filter, thank goodness). The sound is crisp and clear. My favourite part of the game is when Booker sat down to play a guitar and sing along with his partner Elizabeth in order to comfort a lost child.I cannot express in adequate language how deeply moving that scene was. You can find it on Youtube. It was art.The gameplay itself is very fast-paced and fluid in comparison to the last two games. The combat is incredibly well-done. Your new gimmick is the Skyhook (no, not the ones that move the Glass Elevator in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) and it is a huge amount of fun just to use the Skyhook and glide along the rails. It is also very fun to glide along the rails during combat, making combat far, far more exciting and innovative.Second only to the Skyhook is Elizabeth herself. Thanks to her, you DO NOT NEED TO HUNT FOR RESOURCES! This is unprecedented as far as RPG's go. You do not need to hunt down every dollar or bullet to advance the plot. You can get all your resources from Elizabeth, who does all the hunting for you! This contributes greatly to the fluidity of the gameplay. This game is very well-done.5Lives up pretty well to the hypeAfter reading about how AMAZING this game is for months on end I was a bit worried that people were just going crazy because there wasn't many good games being released around the same time as Infinite. Well, I think everyone did get a little caught up the in reviews, but the game is still wonderfully put together. So many games these days are all in grey (I'm looking at you Fallout, Metro 2033, etc.) and Bioshock uses color wonderfully in this game. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the first 2 Bioshocks, although with Elizabeth throwing you health and ammo it is much much less challenging. Maybe I need to tweak the difficulty settings...I thought the overt segregation/racism in the game was a bit questionable at times, whether it was included to actually enhance the story or just in there to be edgy. Other than that the world that they created is fantastic. So many little details, Booker's comments about the environment to himself when you're exploring are great and often hilarious, and while the game is very linear it does offer a few choices throughout (although I won't say much more than that about the story). It's the first game I've played on the PC (1&2 on Xbox) and I didn't like the default control scheme very much, but I tweaked the controls to how I liked them. One of the many reasons I switched to PC gaming, but that aside it can be taxing on some older systems and you really want to see this game in all it's glory, so make sure your system can handle it. If you liked the first Bioshocks then you'll like this and you'll want to pick it up (maybe next steam sale?).5Very creative twist to seriesI'm in the upper limits of age for a gamer and i don't like my reflexes and decision speed tested. This game allow play at a slow pace, with suspense, developing story line and action. The role playing elements are not as strong as in past games in this series. It is really a shooter with light role playing. Even Borderlands 1 and 2 have more character development and traditional role playing elements than this game. The mechanics of the PC version, which I play, are OK but the game seems to be designed with an Xbox type controller in mind. I got a controller that works on the PC but the precision is not as good as the keyboard and mouse. It's a trade off because with the keyboard and mouse it is harder to synchronize both hands. I decided to stick with the controller.Overall it is a fun game with great graphics but the world of the game requires serious suspension of disbelief. The physics is otherworldly and unrealistic but to many players, that's the point. The theme running throughout the game is how racial prejudice used to create a Utopian society makes conflict and mass murder inevitable. It's an old story, told in a new way and maybe it will have some moral effect on the kids who play it. With me, I got tired of gameplay mechanics and the silly way the characters travel so I haven't finished yet. I'll just give it a rest and go back to it sooner or later, just to see how the story unfolds.4A solid and very good game - but not great, especially compared Bioshock 1.Bioshock Infinite is, for a lack of a better term, a very good game that is held down because of the lofty expectations brought forward by Bioshock 1, 2, and the Minerva's Den DLC. It was worth my time, and it should be worth yours, but there is little in my mind that will elevate it towards the deity tier of gaming titles. If it came out a few years ago it would have probably received a 5/5 instead of the 4 I gave it.PROS+Graphics. This game is absolutely beautiful. The art is nice, the atmosphere and scenes are gorgeous, and the backgrounds are amazing. I stood in Columbia just watching the different islands float around many times simply because it was very fun to enjoy and soak in.+Music. There are many haunting yet effective tracks in this game that tie the story and timeline together nicely. Once you finish the game, a lot of the songs and their placement should mean much more to you. With that being said...+Replayability. Once you finish the game and understand the full impact of what just happened, there are some nice moments you should replay since you have new knowledge that will give it more meaning. This includes audiologs, music, conversations, and things written on the walls of back alleys.+Characters. Nothing bad to say about the people you meet. Booker is deep and troubled, Elizabeth is gorgeous and rambunctious, and Comstock is twisted and delusional. Even the people you meet on the streets are enjoyable and add to the overall mood the game is trying to convey.CONS-Combat. Can become very boring very quickly. Once you finalize your preferred weapon and vigor combination then there's little reason to change it up. I used the electrocution ability for 80% of the game because it was very useful.-Beyond a string of annoying boss fights, there's no reason to not play on Hard. Normal is too easy, and will unfortunately sway too many people away from the game because it's not challenging. For the last 25% of the game I switched to Normal because I wanted to plow through to the end, and I was head-shotting numerous groups of bad guys without going through a whole clip.-Gameplay. I may get a little flak for this one, but I felt like the game's pace and overall movement was repetitive. There were multiple "surprises" that were thrown at you that became very transparent. It felt like it was simply a way to extend the overall hours, which was annoying to me. It came to the point that if I was getting on transportation I began expecting it to get hijacked, shot down, or stopped in some way.=Story. I can't really say this is a Pro or Con because I'm still undecided on it. I beat it a week ago and still feel like it was strong, but not great. There are a few cool loose ends that you wrap up in your mind when you see the credits roll, but I wasn't left feeling dumbstruck or numb like I was after Bioshock 1. More importantly, I guessed a lot of the spoilers halfway through the game simply because I was looking for them. This is a product of it being a Shock game - I came to expect a twist.I apologize for the short review, but if you bring anything from this let it be known that I liked this game. A lot. It's just not A+ material. It's a solid B effort, and one I'm glad I played through.4
