Customer Reviews

A must for fans of Jon and his museAs the soundtrack to a movie that bombed badly you could be forgiven for dismissing this Jon Bon Jovi solo effort but it would be wrong to consign it to the scrapheap without giving it a listen if you've ever had a soft spot for his day job band Bon Jovi.Released initially in 1990 and produced by the main man himself and Danny Kortchmar to good effect the albums eleven tracks are all within the confines of the projects brief - ie they are all country tinged to a greater or lesser degree. Most people who were anywhere near a radio in the Western world around 1990 will be familiar with this albums resident hit single and title track Blaze of Glory. And it's probably fair to say that this song is the high point of the record as it has a good chorus, simple yet effective construction and some emotion. It's also pretty much the most hard rockin' number on the entire album. Some of the songs miss the mark badly such as the utterly plastic and fake sounding Bang A Drum and the last track, Guano City, is mercifully only one minute long. Some other tracks however do work to a reasonable degree such as lead cut Billy Get Your Guns and there is some genuine maudlin emotion on songs such as Dyin' Ain't Much of A Livin'. Blood Money tries to work a similar done-me-wrong emotion but falls pretty flat while most of the other tunes blend in with the wallpaper fairly quickly.Jons' familiar voice tends to walk by your side throughout this release, it really does come across as very much a solo effort though anoraks might want to know that such luminaries as Jeff Beck, Elton John and Aldo Nova do turn up on the album in places and the booklet includes the lyrics to the whole shebang. Mind you, once you open out the booklet the side opposite to that with the lyrics has a full size picture of Jon - wow, just what I always wanted! All jokes aside my advice overall is that if you are a Bon Jovi fan and don't have this yet then definitely get it as you'll find a few gems here. And given the directions Bon Jovi have gone over years the country tinge to this album makes perfect sense in hindsight.3Five StarsSince I missed buying this years ago, I had to add it to my collection!5Inspiration achievedAs I understand it, the story goes that Jon Bon Jovi was asked by the producers of this movie if they could use "Wanted Dead Or Alive" in their soundtrack. Bon Jovi told them that he didn't think it fit, being too "modern day" for the film. He did, however, offer to write a song specifically for the movie that was more befitting to the story. What resulted was the much more appropriate "Blaze of Glory". But, being Jon Bon Jovi, he didn't stop there. He was so inspired by the movie and its predecessor he ended up writing a whole album's worth of songs. With help from great musicians like Elton John, Jeff Beck, Aldo Nova and Little Richard he conjured up some really good songs that are well produced and very relevant to the subject matter at hand. Along with the title track my favorite songs are "Justice In The Barrel","Santa Fe" and "Blood Money"(which Jon wrote "for Bob Dylan", who had previously written the soundtrack to "Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid"). This is not the typical Bon Jovi record, nor should it be. But if you like his band you will probably like this solo effort just as much. I certainly do.5Excellent Item! It's Bon Jovi! What else needs to be said?!?!5excellentA++++5Bon Jovi at his bestI just discovered Bon Jovi in the last month, and just in the last month realized that I did not know what it was like to feel truly connected to a song or an artist. I now own 10 Bon Jovi albums, including this one, and love every single one of them -- the band is fantastic, but there is something special about this solo album. No one should be allowed to put as much heart and soul into anything as Jon Bon Jovi puts into these songs. He shows that he is a brilliant lyricist and vocalist in all of his albums, but takes both his lyrics and vocals to an entirely new level here. The only band album that compares to this one as far as being deep, raw, and personal is These Days.Standout songs for me:"Santa Fe" - the most searing, devastating, excruciatingly beautiful song every written or sung. Jon's vocals alone will rock your world, and are combined with the most penetrating lyrics imaginable -- if this song does not leave you shattered then you are probably made of steel. You will feel the blood and sweat and tears that I can only imagine Jon must have shed writing and performing this song."Miracle" - beware, this song will sneak up on you. It has a deceptively light, salsa type of feel, but packs a huge punch. Just listen to the lyrics and Jon's voice and don't be deceived by the "your savior has just left town" -- this is song is upbeat and powerful and quirkily encouraging, you'll listen to it over and over again trying to put your finger on its charm."Dyin' Ain't Much of a Livin'" - another hard hitter that will probably leave you on your knees, don't let the sedate tempo fool you. Jon can put a gravelly sob in his voice that leaves you tingling all over and completely heart-broken, have the tissues on hand."Never Say Die" - deceptively fun, upbeat rock style tune. Listen to the lyrics again, deep stuff. I never thought rock, even with a western flavor, could have so much power to touch."Blaze of Glory" - I can't say anything about this song that hasn't already been said. Deserves to be the title track and one of his biggest hits."Blood Money" - love, love the simple, bare-bones arrangement of this song. Short, thoughtful, all about Jon's voice, which really stands out.I have left out alot of tracks -- but every track on this albums is worth listening to. If more people put this much of themselves into whatever they did the world would be a vastly different and probably much better place. Another reviewer describes Jon's singing on this album as "bleeding his heart out in every lyric" and I could not come up with a better description. If you love Bon Jovi, if you hate Bon Jovi, if you are alive... buy this album and prepare to be touched in a very raw, gritty, personal, authentic way. You will never listen to music the same again -- you might never be the same again.5This possibly Jon Bon Jovi's finest work of artThis possibly Jon Bon Jovi's finest work of art. He has other excellent material, however this is an excellent example of a "themed presentation"! I have owned this album before. Amazon, so far has done a great job of not losing my music.5AwesomeI had this on Cassette back when it first came out. I am a big fan of Jon Bon Jovi as a songwriter and he has written alot of catchy and great tunes. As a soundtrack this is right up there with some of his or dare to say probably best work ever. If you haven't listened to this give it a try but be forwarned for all you early Bon Jovi fans when he was more Hard Rock this is more bluesy, country than In and out of Lovish....and for a solo album even if it is a soundtrack...some of Jons best work ever...I highly recommend you take a listen as every song tells a story that will intrigue you to listen to more...5Like every song.Favorite bon jovi c d.5listen to the wordsgood music5
