They are so similar to the Caran d'Ache Pablo pencil set, in the lay down, that I doubt I would know the difference if the pencils were masked. (Note: Pablo pencils are oil based and resist water. These pencils are water soluble.)The colors lay down easily, even for my arthritic hands, and the barrels, of the pencils, are easy to hold. I worked straight, for several hours on the picture, included, and that is a rare feat for me.The points are hard enough to hold a good point and were easily sharpened in my Ohuhu electric sharpener (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FCVLCJY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I did allow the pencil to turn, as I sharpened it, to make sure the wood came off evenly. Once the sharpener grabs the pencil it only takes a light touch, pressing down, to get a very sharp point.As with all colored pencils, using multiple, light layers works best. I used about three layers on most of the picture I colored from Angela Porter's Color Me Sleepy adult coloring book. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1631062379/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)I am really happy to have this set of colored pencils to add to my extensive collection of colored pencils. I have sets ranging from Caran d'Ache's Luminance (https://www.amazon.com/CREATIVE-ART-MATERIALS-Luminance-6901-776/dp/B00S1GTDDU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522444972&sr=8-1&keywords=caran+d%27ache+luminance), and Holbein's Artist Colored Pencils (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GQ37ZW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to Crayola colored pencils (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019592CL6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I have different uses, for each set, ranging from coloring in adult coloring books to turning out original works of art for sale.For those colorists, who want a high-quality, water soluble, colored pencil set, at less than a dollar a pencil, this set should make you very happy. They aren't going to have the light fastness of the Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle pencils (https://www.amazon.com/Caran-Museum-Aquarelle-Watercolor-Pencils/dp/B00IG92EEM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522445978&sr=8-1&keywords=caran+d%27ache+museum+aquarelle+watercolor+pencils+72) but they will work great for adult coloring books or any art work that isn't displayed near sunlight.5
