Customer Reviews

Excellent VoicesExcellent voices but rather imperfect old recording.4l'elisir d'amoreI am familiar with the singers. I knew what and who I was buying which makes quality. In Toronto now classical music and opera are starting to become difficult to find and buy. We have only two stores I know of and the bigger one will be closing their 100 locations in April since everything arrives first in the U.S., then items go to Canada at 40 percent foreign exchange rate. The result is It becomes too expensive to buy CD's and DVD's. Bought on Amazon5Five StarsThis is one of my favorite operas and I am a big big fan of Sutherland and Pavaroti.5Simply grand Donizetti! The Decca performance of the Donizetti comic masterpiece L'Elisir d'amore is simply the best ever put on record. With the incomparable trio of Sutherland/Pavarotti/Bonynge at the peak of their careers, this performance of L'Elisir is one that you will turn to again and again -- sheer delight from the first moments of the overture to the grand finale. One has to admit that some of Pavarotti's later performances can be difficult to listen to because of the strain in the voice, but not a hint of strain mars his performance here. Sutherland breezes through the score like it is child's play and is so beautiful and focused. Some may carp that Bonynge has chosen a different cabaletta for Adina, but it is used for great effect in the joyous finale. The cabaletta, by the way was written by Charles de Beriot for his wife, Maria Malibran, and it is certainly a showstopper. The sound is well nigh perfect in this lovely re-mastering of the Decca original. If you can have only one L'Elisir, make it this one -- you will not be disappointed. Lovely all round.5Buy it, Treasure itI once heard "La Stupenda" sing this role at the Met, and she stopped the show dead in its tracks after every one of her arias -- something I've never witnessed nor even heard of, at the Met or anywhere else, before or since. It's hard to believe now, given its current huge popularity, but the bel canto repertoire was dead in the water until mid-20th century, when the three greatest coloratura sopranos ever -- Sutherland, Maria Callas, and Beverly Sills -- resuscitated it. I've never been one to force-feed opera to anyone, but any time I need examples to refute the general misconception that opera is unlistenable, my two go-to CDs are Sills's CBC recording of "The Magic Flute", and this one. It's difficult for opera-ignorants to appreciate most operatic performances, but a great coloratura demonstration will knock the socks off of anybody.I can't imagine how anyone could ever record a better performance of L'Elisir than this one. Buy it, absorb it, treasure it.And buy the CBC "Magic Flute" too, if you can find a copy -- when Sills hits those high Fs in "O Zittre Nicht" as if anybody could do it, you'll want to get up and cheer right there in your livingroom.5Sutherland/Pavarotti in fabulous form!I always buy these reissued discs with some trepidation but this is absolutely worth every cent. It is an excellent remastering and Sutherland and Pavarotti are simply marvelous. This has to be some of Donizetti's most glorious music and the spirit and enthusiasm of the entire cast comes through the speakers from start to finish. Ive played it through three times since it arrived and almost cant get enough of it - great stuff. Sutherland in her heyday was a phenomenal singer -you could buy it for her voice alone.5A Fabulous Recording of L'elisir d'amore! This is an amazing recording of Donizetti's opera. Pavarotti, Sutherland, Cossa, and Malas are all amazing here. I own the recording of Pavarotti, Battle, and Nucci by Deutsche Grammaphon and neither Battle or Nucci do the opera justice. Pavarotti, 20 years or so younger in this recording is AMAZING...even though he was good in the later recording....he is AMAZING here. Cossa's bright baritone accompanied by his smooth legato and excellent coloratura make the comic role of Belcore an absolute joy...it's a shame there aren't more recordings of him, with exception to Giulio Cesare and Les Huguenots! Sutherland was in her prime and like most of her recordings of the 60's and 70's has exceptional finesse in her approach to the music. I recommend this recording to anyone looking for one of the greatest recordings of this opera.5Opera enthusiastThis is a phenomenal set .Pavarotti and Sutherland are in a class of their own. The other singers are beyond reproach. It is a wonderful opera with great music. Bonynge and his forces are superb.5chemistryThe best recording of Donizetti's masterpiece, and the undeniable chemistry of Sutherland and Pavarotti. This recording is a masterpiece of the genre and one of my favorite opera recordings.5A Bel Canto ELISIROf the several different recordings of L'ELISIR D'AMORE I have heard over the years, this one from 1970 is the best. Maestro Richard Bonynge takes the proper approach to Donizetti's "pastoral comedy": refined yet robust. That L'ELISIR D'AMORE is a bel canto opera he never for a minute lets you forget: his cast has personality but none of the vocal crudeness present in too many recordings of this opera. Luciano Pavarotti, in his youthful prime here, is a classic Nemorino. On records no other tenor makes you feel quite so sorry for Nemorino in the last scene of Act I, or has quite so much fun with the role while singing it so beautifully. Joan Sutherland is luxury casting as Adina. Her vocal size and depth give the character unusual emotional maturity, and her phrasing is heartfelt. Some listeners may regret the fact that Bonynge chose to replace Adina's customary Act II cabaletta with a more intricate one not by Donizetti; Sutherland, however, sings the lengthy cabaletta -- and the rest of her music -- with supreme assurance. After hearing certain aging bassi buffi largely mug their way through Dr. Dulcamara's music (cough... Fernando Corena...cough), it was a relief to encounter Spiro Malas' firm-voiced yet lively interpretation. Likewise, Dominic Cossa (a baritone I had never heard of before) is an above-average Sgt. Belcore. Bonynge's conducting is decidedly Romantic but never ponderous, and he is to be commended for presenting the opera uncut (he was the first maestro to do so on records), thereby showing us what a wonderful work this really is -- as great in its way as LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR.5
