    My Favorite.My favorite. Years ago I had the opportunity to play using a real tortoise pick. There is a reason why there is so much talk about how nice real tortoise plays. It is because tortoise is really is that good. Dunlop Ultex (or Clayton Ultem) is the closest thing to tortoise I've ever used. Warm when you want it warm, bright when you want it bright. I like the .90, 1.0, and 1.1 sizes. I used to like the .73 but found that they didn't offer the control I wanted and were a bit bright. Dunlop offers the best price and variety of Ultex pics.5these are the best picks I have ever usedFor some reason I thought these were supposed to be metal picks. I was searching specifically for metal picks and these popped up on Amazon though once again they are not metal, they have the appearance of metal in the picture. That said, WOW, these are the best picks I have ever used. I have hyperhydrosis which causes my hands to sweat quite often. I was using Dunlap gator grips (with the picture of the alligator on them) which stayed put in my fingers OK but nowhere near as well as with these picks. Not only do they not slip the tips and rigidity make me play much better just by using these picks alone. I think I have found my new favorites. Haven't had them long so I can't say how well they'll hold up over time but even if I have to buy a pack per year I'm fine with that for the pleasure of using such awesome picks.5Don't buy Tortex. Ultex or nothing.Never again will I underestimate the importance of a good pick. I've been using Dunlop Ultex for a couple years courtesy of a pack given to me as a gift, but not long ago I decided to buy a pack of Dunlop Tortex picks because hey, they were half the price. Big mistake. Tortex picks have this weird matte coating on them that makes the most awful scratching sounds when playing. The Ultex picks are perfectly smooth, and the guitar (I play a Taylor with Elixir strings) sounds SO much cleaner. I could not believe a pick could make that much difference, but boy does it. I've been playing guitar for about 10 years and Dunlop Ultex is undoubtedly the best pick I have ever used. I will never buy another pick.5Sound awesome, break easilyThese are my favorite pick, they sound and feel great. That being said. If you have a heavier hand they are gonna break. They will last through a few band practices, but I would never try to play a show with one. And for bass, don't even think about it. I play bass in a punk band and can't even make it through one song with one of these. I normally use the orange dunlop tortex .6 for that band, so it's not like I'm hitting it ultra hard or anything. Great for around the house and fantastic for the studio because they sound so good. I'd like to try the 1.0 mm and see if those break but I bet they will.3Amazing!Hands down the best picks that I have ever come into contact with. I own the .90 sharps, the 1.0, and 1.14 picks and they are all that I play with now. I have been playing for around ten years and I tend to pick up a pack of picks every time I go to a music store or order any gear online at all. So, I got my hands on one of these at a music store a while back, and went back to find that they no longer had them in stock. Luckily I was able to find them in stock in all thicknesses and shapes on amazon. These picks will never fly out of your hand. I have a terrible problem with my hands sweating, especially when I play guitar. This causes me to lose grip on picks quite often, and these have solved all of my problems. The more I sweat, the better these seam to stick to my fingers. Not to mention that they never wear down, and they glide through your strings like a hot knife through butter. They never seem to snag on the strings, the ultex material is truly the perfect material for a guitar pick.5Where have these been all my life?Ultex picks sound a bit jangly on my Martin dread so I use something else, but these babies really brought my Gibson jumbo to life like nothing else did. I had tried everything to coax an exciting sound out of that big old box, but these picks finally did it. They were a total revelation: bright, crisp, clean, upfront sound. Easy to hold, fast and slick, they feel good against the strings and boy, do they sing. I use the 73's for flatpicking or digging into blues, and the 60's are great for smoother rhythm playing. Sometimes in a pinch I'll even use a 1.0 on the mandolin, although it's not my first pick, so to speak. Contrary to other reviews citing indestructibility, I have found they do create dust from being shaved against the strings, which is a little strange and a just a tad messy, but it's more than worth it for the sound. My only gripe at this writing: how come the 60's run a buck-fifty more per six pack than the 73's do? Oh, the injustice.5Never going back to regular picks again.I got used to the guitar picks that typically came free with other purchases, whether it be a guitar strap or just wandering into our local Guitar Store franchise.What you ll notice first with these picks is the texture... they don t slip or slide in your hand while at the same time you can maneuver them quite easily unlike some of the bumpy picks you ll come across. It s tough to describe.The other thing about these is the way they wear... where the cheap picks will lose their shape after some playtime, these don t. You ll notice that instead of the tip becoming rounded off, it ll keep its shape but the wear happens to the edge in a more uniform fashion. If you typically downpick like me when you play, one edge will get a little smoothed off after some significant playtime. Flip the pick over, and it s as good as new. If you alternate your picking, then these will last quite a while.I ve noticed that the thickness on these don t seem to be a 1:1 comparison in the feel dept when compared to the Nylon/Cellulioid equivalents. To put it another way, these .73mm Ultex picks have about as much flex as a .8x or .9x Nylon pick. I typically play in Drop C with 10-52 strings and while .73 works perfectly fine, they were a little stiffer than I anticipated at first. I think I ll take the thickness down one notch and see how it feels.Nonetheless, I m never going with another pick again... Dunlop Ultex has the best mix of grip + wear pattern that I ve ever come across.5Great tones and feel from these picks. Lots of thickness to choose from!Great picks!!!!! I absolutely love these picks. They have the feel of an old school pick but have better grip. The tone you get off these picks are excellent for strumming, harmonics, sweeps, etc.... It took me a couple of tries to get the size right and ended up going with the .73mm as a personal taste. Considering these are about 5-6 bucks + tax at guitar center for a 10 pack, this comes out to be an incredible deal (Saved around $10) and now I have enough picks to last me at least until the end of the year (or next time I search under all crevices in my house).5Harder does not mean less breakable...I explode both strings and picks regularly. In 20 years of playing the only picks I've found that can withstand my abuse are tortex ones. When I saw ultex was tougher, I decided to give it a shot. They are a bit more stiff than tortex, but I actually kinda like that for electric. On acoustic they are too stiff and therefore more brittle than their tortex counterparts. I explode them as bad as I explode fender picks. Harder does not always mean less breakable. I will keep using them on electric, not so much on acoustic.4RecommendI've been using Dunlop .60 thickness picks for a long time for which I am running a Taylor 814ce Rosewood Grand Auditorium Acoustic Guitar , 6-String, CE with Elixir Strings Acoustic 80/20 Bronze Guitar Strings with NANOWEB Coating, Custom Light (.011-.052). I recent upgraded my selection to the Ultex Standard version and I can say I love them so far. It feels great in the hand and maintain good "stickiness" between the finger and thumb. My major aspect of a pick for myself is that it must not substantially change the sound of the guitar in a negative way, this pick certainly achieves that and likely better than my previous Dunlop picks.For a guitar pick to work well, you need to find the correct thickness dependent upon your instrument and string thickness as well as the tone that you are looking to achieve. For my uses this pick achieves the correctness I was looking for and haven't moved from this thickness in years. That's not to say I have not gone down to the local guitar shop and tried several other thicknesses, as I most certainly have. I always just end up right back to this particular brand of pick and thickness.5
