Customer Reviews

Perfect pick!I prefer the Ultex material to the Tortex picks I was previously using. Ultex seems to be more durable and the tips don't wear as fast. I also feel like I get better pick precision and speed with the sharp style tip. I use the 1.14mm for both electric and acoustic. My playing style ranges from bluegrass to metal, to blues and this pick works for all.5Fantastic picksThe pick attacks on these are nice and snappy, and consistent. There is no "clack" on the plain strings, nor "scratch" on the wound strings, if you know what I mean. They glide across the strings with ease. I have the 1.4mm and the 2.0mm and both are fantastic. It's been several months of only using one pick of each thickness and I have not noticed any wear.Because the underlying material is pretty stiff, there isn't much difference between 1.4mm and 2.0mm in terms of rigidity. However, I find the 1.4mm easier to hold. The 2.0mm occasionally slips a bit... the pick is thick enough that if my finger or thumb end up near the edge, it will slide down that relatively steep bevel on the pick edge. The 1.4mm is just thick enough to feel and play like a heavy pick, but thin enough that the bevel (which I wouldn't do without because it helps the pick glide better) doesn't present a slipping problem. One other thing to note is that these picks solve a problem I didn't know I had... when I play in the upper registers (17th fret and up) of the upper strings there is a tendency for the notes to get "plinky" when I use other picks. Hard to explain, but maybe you know what I'm talking about all you hear is the pick attack, and very little of the actual note. Somehow, these picks cause those upper notes to ring loud and clear. It sounds great.Overall, both picks are better, in my opinion, than any of the other picks I own, which is a lot. By the way, this includes other picks of the same material but different shape, and other picks of the same shape but different material. The 1.4mm Ultex Sharp is just exactly perfect for me, but I'd still take the 2.0mm over any of my other picks if I had to.5My search for the best pick is over. The ultex material is stiff, which helps keep technique more consistent. I've tried jazz picks, which are sharp, but are too small for my liking and the tips are very pointy, so my tone isn't consistent. These Ultex Sharp picks are the perfect blend of size, strong material with just a hint of flexibility, sharper tip than the standard, so I don't have to keep sanding the end, and generate consistent tone from the strings, whether playing lead or strumming. I'm using these now for both electric and acoustic guitar. The 1.4mm and 1.0mm feel similar. My search for the best picks are now over...5My favorite picks for metalI have bought all types of picks and I find that the ultex sharps are the best fit for me. A lot of other pick materials or shapes slide in my fingers and I often lose grip. I buy them in 1.14mm and play a lot of heavy metal/power metal and these provide a nice tone, and I especially love the sharp tip (although this is why the pick wears fast for me). My only complaint is I wear through them quickly (~10hrs per pick), but I buy them in bulk, so I don't mind. It's a small trade off for such an excellent pick.5PerfectI spent two years trying various picks of different materials, shapes, and sizes, and this is what I've finally landed on.Ultex is a strong, tough material which allows you to get a stiffer pick (for faster picking) without making it too thick, which muffles the attack. I also like the pointier tip, it's not *too* pointy like some of Dunlop's other pointy picks are but just enough to facilitate clean, fast picking. It has a pleasant tone to it too. I had used Delrin previously, but that has a very soft, muffled attack. Lastly, the Ultex seems to afford a good solid grip so the pick doesn't slide around on you5The Tips Wear Out QuicklyI've been a long time user of Dunlop Tortex Blues - but I decided to give these a shot based on a recommendation. My playing style definitely isn't easy on my instruments or my picks, and I'm on an everlasting search for picks where the tips don't break down or wear out. These picks have a great feel to them, sturdy and thick - but are lightweight and feel nimble. It certainly feels like a Dunlop pick, but very different from its Tortex brethren. The only thing I don't like is that they don't last very long. After a two hour jam sesh - if I'm getting down on it - I gotta throw the pick out at that point. The tip breaks down and it gets fumbly feeling, like it's snagging the strings.Overall I'll be saving the rest of the 72 pack I bought for my acoustic playing instead of electric. If you're a heavy pick player and you want an acoustic pick - these things are great. They just can't take a hard beating on an electric if you're a shredder. I'll be picking up some of my beloved Tortex Blues for electric playing. Keep rockin'.3Super heavy duty, slippery, quiet and pointed! These Ultex picks provide me a new level of control over my picking!I can play quietly and then explode, increasing the dynamic range of my guitar over my other, more traditional picks. Also, these aren't quite as 'clicky' as many picks that I've used made from other materials. I don't mean that they are dull, either. But when I am playing acoustic guitar quietly, I like the fact that these picks don't have as much of a click to them as my others do!For my electric guitars, these are also very fast and smoother than my other picks! These are smooth sided picks so, if you are a shredder, you might want to drill them to increase your grip or get similar ones made from the Ultex that already have some other forms of grip built into them? But for me and my style, these are what I was hoping for!5great almostr tortoise shell picksI bought a number of different kinds of picks, trying to find one that wasn't too thin, or too thick, or slippery or plastic feeling or precise - nothing felt truly right until this one. I do drill a 1/4" hole through the center because I rotate the pick off to the back edges for some strumming patterns and to improve the precision and grip for me, but even without that I would highly recommend these picks, either in sharp or regular (I use both)5The best all-around pick!Everyone is right. This is simply a great, general purpose pick. It is made of a tough, material, not too soft, not too hard. It gives a brighter tone than picks made of softer materials, such as wood, celluloid and nylon, but not as bright as harder materials like acrylic or the so-called "tortoise shell" type materials. I would say if you are looking for something in between the sound of the warmest and the brightest sounding picks, the Ultex material hits the sweet spot of an all around great sounding pick. In particular, the "Sharp" Ultex pick style (i.e., sharper point) works especially well for playing individual notes (lead), as well as for strumming (rhythm). If you are looking for a good all-around pick, which works well for a variety of playing styles, the Ultex would be an excellent choice.5My perfect pickI found my perfect pick. I've been trying out many different picks every since I started playing guitar. For a long time I was a die-hard Jazz III user, but found they were just a little too small for me to comfortably slam out chords. I tried the sharp-tipped Gravity and V-picks as well, but found that they felt too thick and stiff for anything but lead work. Then I found these, and they're just perfect. The 1.14 mm Ultex sharps have (almost) everything i want - the perfect size and tip, just enough flex to make chords comfortable, an grippy material, and snappy top-end tone. On top of all that, they're dirt cheap if you buy them in bulk.My one complaint is that they wear out super fast. I use 10-52 strings in standard tuning, and I play a lot of hard, heavy power chords, Metallica-style. Under my abuse, these picks only last for about 30 minutes before the edges and tips are blunted, and I have to sharpen them up on some sandpaper to make them usable again. Most people are not nearly as abusive to their picks as I am, so this may be a non-issue for you.5
