Customer Reviews

Fun way to work out at homeI recommend making sure you are getting all the components with this game unless you're looking for replacement parts. It is supposed to come with a leg band and a resistance strap, both of which the game requires you to use. I've actually stopped using the resistance band because it doesn't "resist" much, and I just lift weights instead for those exercises that "require" the resistance band. The leg strap is more important. The game uses it to store your nunchuk when you're not using it; it also uses the leg strap to monitor your movement and activity so it can give you credit for doing or not doing the exercise. This monitoring is predictably imperfect, but it works for the most part.I use this game in conjunction with the Wii Balance Board and Wii Fit Plus to get a full and complete workout. The aerobic workouts are better on EA Active. The yoga and strength training and "fun" games are better on Wii Fit Plus, so for me the combo is necessary. But both contain good workout trackers and progress trackers, and both can be used as little or as much as you want. Very flexible programs. I like both the preset and custom workout options on this one. Custom is great when I know exactly what needs rest or what needs to be worked. The preset workouts are perfect for when I just need a good, overall routine, and being able to set difficulty level is great as well. 4Great but needs some fine tuning...First before I write this, let me say that I love wii active and I use it almost everyday and have recommended it to friends and family. Unfortunately, there are some things that EA needs to work on to make this better.1. I got this for christmas and where the velcro is on the leg strap, it is already coming apart. I have ordered another, and have placed duct tape over this section on my old leg strap. I am not a large person, and there is plenty of velcro left for me to wrap it around. Also, to keep the leg strap on my leg while doing the jogging, I need to make the leg strap very tight, otherwise it just slides down my leg as I am running.2. The resistence band is very flimsy. It gives little resistence for me. I don't feel like my muscles are working very hard when I am using it. I am planning on getting another to make my workout really count.3. This one really bugs me! I am left-handed and this is definitely for right-handed people. The tennis and boxing drills are hard for me because I want to use my left hand and I never hit the target on tennis, unless I stand still and really try to control my right hand. Also, the wii remote is always held in your right hand, and when I first started using it, I kept on getting held up because I instictively held the controller in my left hand. Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Band Hero have options to set what hand you use, why can't wii active do the same. With that being said, I look foward to using this game, get quite the workout in my legs when I set it on hard. I love the journal feature and it makes me aware of some of the habits I need to change... (like for instance, I forget to eat while I am at work, very stressed) and it asks me about my food intake, stress level, and how much sleep am I getting. All in all, this is a great game, a lot better than wii fit in my opinion, I just wish that EA would work on the above issues, and it would get 5 stars from me! 3Workout at homeI purchase EA Sports Active in hopes of keeping myself in shape during those cold Iowa winter months. I found that when I was moving around and being as active as I felt I should be, the velcro band would slowly find it's way sliding down my leg. This would cause me to stop the workout, pull it back up and then begin again. This was a continuous cycle that seemed to happen whether or not I was wearing pants or shorts. The activities themselves were definitely a workout and I would recommend them. I wish I could have found a way to not get frustrated with the leg band.4How EA Sports Active compliments your Wii FitI've been anxiously awaiting EA Sports Active since I heard about it. I love my Wii Fit, but I've outgrown it as a tool for serious exercise. My first two days with EA Sports Active have been great. I think this title improves upon a lot of the weaknesses of Wii Fit. However, I don't think it's a replacement for the Fit and I plan to use them in a complimentary way combined with cycling (for better aerobic exercise).Advantages of Active1. Pre-defined workouts. This is Wii Fit's biggest weakness. I spend more time composing my workout on the Fit than actually doing it. Active handles the composition part for me and I love it for that. As I progress, it also affords me the ability to compose my own workouts.2. Better workout in a shorter period of time. Because I don't have to constantly fuss with the Wiimote and extraneous demos and conversation every time I exercise, my workout is more intense and expeditious. Two things I like. Plus, it gives me a more noticeable next-day burn.3. Resistance band. Active's resistance band workouts are great. I feel like I get a better upper-body workout than with the Fit.Disadavantages of Active1. Handedness. I'm left handed and Active is an entirely right-handed system. It doesn't matter too much, but it does expect me to play tennis as a righty and that feel unnatural. There should be an option to change handedness.2. Not as sensitive. Active ignored the motions of my Wiimote and suggested that I hadn't done the exercise more frequently than I'd like. Each time it was fine for a few seconds, but the system should eventually move on and assume that it was a connection issue rather than continue to remind me to do it (or let me press a button to indicate I've completed the exercise).3. No yoga/stretching. I really enjoy doing yoga on the Fit. Some sort of pre-workout stretch would be nice.4. No scale/BMI.SummaryI think Fit and Active will be great complimentary products. I plan to use the Fit primarily for yoga and stretching. I'll use Active for my strength training. I'll compliment the two Wii games with cycling for aerobics. 4So so *so* much better than Wii Fit!My husband and I have started the 30 day challenge and it's kicking our behinds. Wii Fit never got me sweating more than a tiny bit on the hullahoops, but this game has me dripping sweat and running for the shower the second I'm done. I've been doing the 30 day challenge, and the two days on/one day off method is really needed because boy my body aches after two days of medium intensity. I really feel that it's giving me that at home workout that I was looking for when I bought Wii Fit.Let's be honest-- when you're starting out a fitness routine it's hard to get motivated to stick with going all the way to a fitness club. I love that I can roll out of bed and get a quick workout in before my morning shower. It has really helped motivate me and after only 4 workouts out of 20 for the 30 day workout I've already lost some weight. It's also a huge improvement on the Wii Fit because it moves from one exercise to the next without you having to stop the flow of the workout. If you're looking to start a workout routine after being a couch potato, this is perfect. If you already have a good level of fitness then you will probably want to get tighter resistance bands as everyone is suggesting, and work out on the high impact setting or set your own custom routine to really push it.The only downside for me at this point is that I may have to buy a wireless nunchuck because the wired one can get a little frustrating and tangled when you're really going at it. As a small side note, I also had a bit of trouble keeping the leg band on, but I changed pants and tightened it a lot more than I thought I needed to at first, and it's been staying up just fine now.---EDIT--After a full week of using the game and tracking my calories with thedailyplate I've lost 5 pounds(!). I was never able to stay motivated with Wii Fit, and I think that the overly-enthusiastic "personal trainer" is more effective at keeping me going than I expected. Another bonus that I just figured out is that if you're doing the 30 day challenge and can't cope with whatever exercise is on screen you have the option to skip that specific activity by pushing the + button. Obviously this isn't something you want to do all the time, but if you just can't seem to get the right form and it's starting to get irritating, at least the option is there. Anyway, I don't know how intense this game would be for someone that has a high level of fitness, but for those of us that don't want to go to a gym or are just starting out it's a great way to get motivated and help change your lifestyle. It's been great for helping me lose some baby weight and having someone take the 30 day challenge is a way to help stick with it if you're the type to give up easily. Good luck! 5According to my heart rate monitor, this is a mega calorie burner for me!!When you hit the age of 43 you assume there is a reason the word "work" is in the term "work out"...til now!!Wow, I set my heart rate monitor as I always do...I have over 100 workout dvds and I love to compare how many calories I burn. But here's the thing...usually I have to FORCE myself to workout. I wound up having so much fun with this that I wasn't even watching the clock, or the calories I was burning...I didn't want to quit!Imagine my shock when I did look at the caloric burn and discover it was hundreds of calories more than I usually burn when I do a full circuit workout with top notch trainers!! Now THAT makes this well worth it! In fact, it was OVER what the calories on the screen showed I burned (when someone else in the house tried it out, their caloric burn was exactly what the screen says). Caloric estimations on sports equipment are always estimations...all they can be without reading your heart with a monitor...but I have found in the past that almost all OVERestimate how many calories you have burned. It's nice to see one really try to get it spot on and be conservative. Most people probably do truly burn the amount on the screen.Better than Wii fit as far as how many calories I burned?! By far! I am small so, bear in mind that anyone larger will burn more calories working out at the same rate I did, but on the first try at the game I burned 200 calories according to my heart rate monitor. The second time 300. And, it should be noted, that doesn't include the calories burned for strength training included on the game. Studies have shown strength training continues to burn calories for 24 hours after you workout while cardio just a few hours...and, it builds muscle which increases metabolism burning more calories even at rest. (I only burned 65 doing Wii fit according to my heart rate monitor for the same amount of time) It takeks a deficit of 3,500 calories to lose a pound so someone larger could easily lose 2 pounds a week or more by playing this game (they would burn more calories if they worked out the same rate I did. I'm 5'3" and weight just 117 pounds.) As for me, I have been losing a pound a week not changing my diet at all and playing it often. For me this helps me keep my weight off if I choose to go have a good restaurant meal and, more importantly, I have gained endless energy, fun and cardio heart health.Have we, perchance, finally discovered the cure to American Obesity? He He...seriously, you'll learn great FORM so that you do the workout RIGHT so you get maximum results...you'll do cardio which burns instant calories but also do strength training which builds muscle so you continue to burn calories even while at rest (quite the win/win in my idea of a workout)None of that matters, however, if you don't enjoy what you are doing or can't keep doing it. This, no matter how severe your case of ADD may be, will HOLD YOUR ATTENTION and is more fun than you'd imagine...and that means you keep doing it and that means it works better, for me personally, than any gym membership.I actually worked out longer, harder, and better, than if I had done anything else. That truly, truly impresses me. But the fact that I felt I'd used muscles I somehow never hit before in other workouts and burned more calories while I had a smile on my face......priceless!!(p.s. this household has a workout fanatic and a workout hater and we both give it 5 stars so it reaches the chasm of everything in between!) 5Good workout concept marred by poor responsivenessI've been using EA Active workout for the Wii for about 2 weeks now. 7 or 8 workout sessions, long enough to get a good feel for it's strengths and weaknesses.First, yes, better than the Wii Fit Plus workouts in that there is more attention to it presenting a full coordinated 30 minute workout with EA Active. And EA active does a better job of integrating sports like basketball and volleyball without turning them into "video games" like Wii Fit Plus. There's more musical varierty (and the ability to choose workout music) with EA, the fitness journal is nice (although probably no better than the workout tracking and logging in Wii Fit Plus), and the 30 day challenge is a nice start. The videos of the trainers (real people) doing the exercices in EA are also better than the animated examples in Wii Fit Plus. But where EA active really falls down is in the controller/avatar responsiveness. I know there's nothing wrong with my Wii remotes. They work great and provide instant responses with Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus. But with EA Active, there's a discernable delay in any motion I make until the motion is reflected by my character on screen. In some exercises, like most of the lifts with the exercise band and the lunges, it's no big deal. But a quarter to half second response delay in sports like volleyball or inline skaing make it close to impossible to time a volleyball bump or set (timing your motions to move 1/4 sec before the ball arrives) or to time a jump off a ramp in inline skating. While you can continue to workout with the flaws and burn calories, it really detracts from a workout to try to guess on the timing.I've also had instances where the workout simply stopped responding to the remote motion. In the middle of what had to have been my 10 set of curls in 7 workouts, the workout simply stopped responding to my right arm in the middle of a curl. The remote was still clearly alive and active as pressing buttons brough up menus as appropriate, but no amount of moving the remote up or down turned in any direction would bring my character's arm "down" from the up position of a curl.I can't speak to the vocal characteristics or "coaching" of the female trainer but the male is positively annoying, especially when the EA Active's response seems to be the real culprit. His tone becomes condescending, critical, and insulting when your workout isn't right. I'd rather the system give more specific feedback as to what's wrong with a move than playground insults like "you're going to hurt yourself out there" or "you'd be better off just avoiding the obstacles." It would be bad enough to hear that feedback if I were goofing off or giving 1/2 effort but when the game simply isn't responding to your actions, well, I guess that's what the mute button is for. 3Finally a workout game that REALLY works me out!Initial ImpressionWii Active is AWESOME! AWESOME!! I was holding out big hopes for this game because while I love wii fit, golds gym coach and my fitness coach, this game offers full use of the wii motion controls and balance board for feedback. If you do not have the balance board, the game is just as useful. The balance board makes some exercises more "total body" and intense but the game was designed to be used without it. This game is honestly what I thought I was getting when I bought the wii fit! This game is more of a gym style workout consisting of strength exercises with resistance, cardio, and sports drills. There is no yoga in this game nor is there any abdominal work (which I find kind of strange because they were pretty thorough with everything else).Intensity/Sports DrillsI just finished my second full 40 minute workout and it was great! I feel like I just came back from the gym. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed the sports drills.I dont enjoy the tennis or baseball on wii sports. But the sports drills on Active are really intense, you actually have to jump to do volleyball serves and the motions are exactly as they are when you play the game.Sports included are Baseball (pitching and batting and catching), volleyball (serving, bumping and setting), Basketball (so far I've just seen shooting and passing), Skating (with leg lifts), Tennis (serving, fore-shots, volleying, backshots). Basketball shooting involves twisting to grab a ball and then making a jump shot. It really gives a virtual reality feel to sports exercises. During kickboxing you are able to use the balance board to kick the heavy bag and do knee ups which really got my heart rate up. During running exercises, you are placed on a track and the game has you alternate between running, walking, knee ups, and kick ups. I really felt as though I had a coach with me. I used to work out with a personal trainer and this really had the same feel.Balance Board UseYou ARE able to use the balance board with this game. For the sports drills it made me (uncoordinated as I am) less accurate but it did incorporate more total body usage. For instance, in baseball when you catch you do a side lunge before you reach up or out to catch the ball. There is an option to use the balance board with all the sports drills. I havent seen any resistance exercises that used the balance board though.High Intensity ExercisesThere are some hi-intensity or slightly more advanced strength exercises included such as jumping lunges, jumping squats, squat and hold, side to side jumps, bicep curl with shoulder press, bicep curl with kickback, lateral raise with row, etc.SetupAfter setting up the resistance band and leg strap (easy, took 2 minutes tops) I had to set up a profile. There was great variety on how personalized you can make your avatar look with very cool outfits to choose from. It doesnt let you really change the height of your avatar or age (in appearance) so when I set up avatars for my kids, they looked like adults. You set your goals such as how many calories you want to burn over a period of x number of days, how many workouts you want to complete per week or month, and how many hours you want to workout per week or month. I was surprised it didnt include weight loss goals but then I guess it would have to assume you have the balance board and it tries to stay away from that.30 Day ChallengeI chose the 30 day challenge simply because it seemed like the quickest way to get started. The range of activities was really astounding and I enjoyed the entire workout. It was great to have the game give feedback on form. Before you do every exercise the first time, it automatically shows you a video on proper form. While I was familiar with most of the exercises, the videos are useful because it shows you how to hold the remote for each exercise. You can skip them if you really want. After you watch them the first time, you don't have to see it again. The exercises included cardio, sports drills, resistance upper and lower exercises and track. Even if you choose the 30 day challenge, you can still just select individual workouts as well, but I found the challenge to be a great motivator because it will take me through all of the exercises...not just my favorites.Pre-Set/Customized ProgramsYou can also choose from more than 50 pre-set programs such as 30 minute lower body, 20 minute sports drills, 40 minute whole body, 60 minute upper body hard or easy, 40 minute cardio only, athletic exercises, 30 minute low-impact, 50 minute hi-impact and many others. Literally, I don't see potential for getting bored with your exercise routine anytime soon with this game. You can also create your own program by just picking the exercises you like. You can customize it further in that you can choose the duration and intensity for each individual exercise, and intensity and length of total time that you would like to work out for. It sounds like a lot of choices, but it was very simple and I created a very kid-friendly program in about 4 minutes.Multi-Player ModeThe multi-player mode works really well also. It is best to have the additional player accessory kit but I found that most of the sport drills and upper body strength exercises only require that the second player have a remote and nunchuk anyway so even without it, my kids and husband are able to work out with me. My husband said he would work out with me with the Active because it looks like a real workout (He thought my wii fit and my fitness coach were cute). He was especially impressed with the sports drills.Bad Knees/Problem areasThe great thing about it is that if you have a weak area or injury, such as bad knees, you are able to see all the exercises you will do in either 30-day challenge mode or pre-set mode and if you can't do those exercises, you can simply uncheck them. I have bad knees and so I uncheck some of the jumping exercises. It would have been nice if you could set that up in your profile and it simply took those exercises out of your program but being able to select or deselect them day-by-day is probably more flexible.Age-AppropriateFor those of you who wonder if small children would like it, my kids (age 3 and 5) were able to do the sports drills with me like tennis and baseball very easily (they don't fare so well with the wii sports version). Since the game is not trying to simulate actual playing, all they had to do was swing the remotes at the right time. They didnt have to worry too much about moving to be in the right place.Final AnaylsisI honestly am in Love with this product! Of course I could make suggestions for improvements, (everything can be improved on), but I really think they did an superb job with this. This is what I thought the wii fit game was going to be from the beginning! Since this game focuses more on a gym-style workout, combining it with the balance, core and strength exercises from wii fit and the yoga and variety from my fitness coach really enables me to get a full and varied workout. However, if you don't own the other games, honestly I would recommend getting this one. It just gives me a more realistic workout feel.Tips1. the resistance band that comes with the game is either light or medium. For those of you who would like to increase this, just purchase stronger resistance bands and use those instead. This really increased the intensity of my workout.2. Make sure you insert the nunchuck in the holder face down toward the floor or else your mii positioning will be backwards (ie your mii will be squatting down when you are standing upright)3. It takes some getting used to positioning the remote and nuncheck in the right way for each exercise so that it can properly evaluate your movements....watching the videos, even if you know how to maintain proper form in the gym, is recommended. Dont get frustrated, the game has been pretty accurate as far as I have seen, you just have to make sure you hold the remotes as they tell you to.4. Those of you who would like to work out with weights or cords versus bands can incorporate that for certain exercises on your own (the game doesnt say anything about this...this is just what I noticed while working out). Things like shoulder presses, bicep curls and squats with ankle weights would work fine with this game. 5A true workoutThis is, hands down, my favorite exercise game for the Wii. That's not to say I always enjoy it - some of the running and lunge sets are pure torture. But it's the only program I have been able to stick with, and results started showing within a week or so. My muscles are more defined and my clothes are looser. I don't think I will be able to stick with this one program forever, but there is enough variety that I'm still going strong after 5 months. There are a few negatives - the trainer can be annoying, the rubber band is not particularly resistant, it's irritating to keep removing and replacing the nunchuck, and once in a while, the program fails to register movements for no apparent reason. But the good aspects far outweigh the bad. The little pointless trophies are inspiring. The weekly and monthly goals are achievable, and if you are a bit short on calories or hours during one week of a thirty-day workout, you can easily do a custom workout to meet the goal and feel good about yourself. The routines are varied enough to prevent boredom, but there aren't so many exercises that it becomes impossible to remember how to do each one. Also, the calendar rearranges itself if a workout is missed or an extra workout is done on a rest day - good for those of us with irregular schedules. While weight loss is a good thing, my aim with this and similar programs is just to get a bit healthier. I don't enjoy the gym, and my allergy to bees makes me afraid to spend too much time outdoors in the summer. This is the first game I've found that seems effective and is easy to keep coming back to.5Getting Active AgainI bought this from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I am 55 and just beginning a fitness routine after too many years of doing nothing. I received a Wii Fit Plus and enjoy those games, but wanted some diversity, so I bought EAS Active. After experimenting with it for a week, I started their 30 day challenge yesterday. It is much more of an aerobic workout than WFP. The resistance band is good for a beginner (like me) but based on what I have read, it won't last long. Easy enough to replace.I hated the leg band because it never seems to stay where I want it, and the 30 day challenge makes you put the nunchuck in the pouch, and back out - repeatedly. I sewed a small pocket on the leg of two pairs of bike shorts and it works out much better for me.This game raises my heart rate and makes me sweat (I am at the lowest level of intensity). I am sure that many people would bump up the intensity and the resistance bands. I hope I get there!Generally, the directions are easy to follow, but sometimes the signal doesn't seem to transmit properly and it makes you wait until it senses you are in the right position. Many people will say, "Just go to the gym," or "Go outside and walk." I prefer to exercise at home, in my comfy clothes (or jammies) without having to worry about other people judging me, or bad weather.EAS Active is a fun way to get moving again, and even though the trainer says really hokey things, the positive reinforcement helps. 5This is the workout you have been waiting forI have done every workout and every video game workout in existence and this one tops the list. It is fun, addicting and most of all it gives you an amazing workout. It is easy to follow and works well with the balance board although it is not necessary for a lot of the activities. It gives you a 30 Day Challenge from Bob Green and you win trophies from completing other challenges as well. When you do a regular workout they select there are different target areas they will have in the workout but you can also create your own workout like my son made a mixed martial arts workout with a lot of the boxing and then he made a sports workout with basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, boxing, and more. When you just do your regular workout there are things like running, lunges, squats, inline skating balancing, arm workouts with the bands, and others. I did the selected workout yesterday and when I finished a half hour my son asked me to try his sports workout. Another half hour later I realized that I burned 448 calories on my heart rate monitor and it seriously was all fun. I'm not saying this is not work and I have been working out for years so it isn't entirely new to me as far as the exercises and forms but this new way of doing it is incredible. So if you are looking for a new thing in you life to get you to enjoy working out that you will want to do again and again along with challenging yourself, do yourself a favor and buy this. 5Initial ImpressionsI've only been using this for two days, so maybe this won't count for much, BUT my initial thoughts are that for someone looking for a fun, motivating program, this isn't it. I'm not talking about all the folks who can motivate themselves to work out. I'm talking about people like me, who typically exercise for a month, and then watch tv for nine months before getting back to it. The Wii Fit programs are at least more entertaining, although I can say those programs got old over time, as this one certainly will. As far as this program, I of course, started out on 'easy', and the first day's workout was easy. The second day was harder - but it was suppose to be a mix of upper and lower body, and creamed my lower body with lunges and high-kick running, but didn't do as much as I wanted for upper body. I haven't had any trouble with the nunchuck being in the leg strap, other than the wire occasionally getting in the way while using the resistance band. It is awkward to move between exercises when you have to stop and put the nunchuck in the leg strap, or take it out, or get the resistance band in place. Since it can use the Wii balance board, it seems it should use it more (maybe it will eventually) - take advantage of the capability. My round of exercises on the first day used the board twice, and not very effectively. The second day's round didn't use it at all. I did have issues on the second day with the program recognizing when I was moving my arms up or down. AND, I ran off to the bathroom during a tutorial video, thinking the program wouldn't start until I pressed a button ... it did start without me, and my character had already done a rep by the time I got back - that's not impressive. Your motivation to keep at it are graphs and trophies. I find it amusing that the "Half Way There" Trophy is awarded at 10 out of 30 days (30 days being your big goal - to complete 30 days of workouts). Overall, if you are self-motivated to exercise, this program will probably make a nice addition to mix with your other workouts. I do so wish someone would make a really fun and entertaining workout program for those of us who need extra impetus. Bring on Raving Rabbids Aerobics or something. And please get rid of these lame trainers. I've generously given this three stars - it more or less does what it was made for. 3
