Awesome Upgrade For A Blues Junior IIII play through a Peavey Delta Blues 115 as my main gigging amp. I love that amp but it's a big old heavy sucker with that 15 inch speaker so I bought a Fender Blues Junior III as a grab and go amp to take to local jams and smaller gigs. At first it was a pretty big adjustment to get "my" sound through such a small box but over time I acquired the right sounding pedals, built a small pedalboard tailored to the BJ, and that got me close enough. Still I always felt that there was something not right about the tone I was getting from the BJ with drive pedals. Cleans and "on the edge of breakup" tones were spot on but as soon as I engaged the my boost pedal it seems like the mids would turn to mush and I would have to turn the volume up on my guitar which, in turn, made the highs too ice picky. I compensated for this my rolling the tone farther down on my guitar during rhythm parts which left me with a somewhat muddy rhythm crunch tone. I've heard a lot about Eminence speakers the last few years and the Cannabis Rex seems to be the one everybody online raves about in the Blues Junior so I decided to order one for my BJ and a Texas Heat for my home practice amp (a current model Peavey Bandit). I admit I was somewhat skeptical that a simple speaker change could make a noticeable improvement to the tone of an amp. Well I stand corrected. Installing the Cannbis Rex was the best thing I could have done for my BJ. The first thing I noticed was that the reverb, which can get a little harsh past 9 o'clock mellowed out and sounds a lot warmer. The next thing I noticed was that it "rounded off" the tone and made the highs sound "sweeter", more musical without overly attenuating them. The bass sounds tighter, more defined but more present than with the stock lightning bolt speaker. The mids remain articulate with drive pedals and boost engaged. No more need to roll the tone back on my Tele bridge pickup and boost the guitar volume for solos. I just step on my boost pedal and the tone is perfect. I have found that I even like using the "fat" switch on my amp now where before the speaker swap it didn't sound good to my ears. The Blues Junior is a great little amp and the stock speaker isn't bad but the Eminence Cannabis Rex is a definite improvement to my ears. It definitely gives your BJ a rounder more "tweedy" feel which I've always preferred over "glassy" blackface cleans for my playing style which is seldom 100% clean.**Update 1/2019: The speaker has had time to break in and the sound has just gotten better. The speaker handles lows much better than the stock speaker and the highs are sweeter; less brittle. I bought a couple new pedals (a Green Russian BMP reissue and tremolo) and, after tweaking, I have been very pleased with the sounds I am able to get out of the little Blues Junior. Before the speaker change my BJ didn't play well with muff style pedals; now it sounds huge. I added a tremolo pedal to make up for the lack of it on the amp and now I feel like I could play the BJ and the DB interchangeably without compromising very much on my tone. Current pedalboard I run withe Blues Junior consists of a Visual Sound Double Trouble (two tuber screamers in one pedal) an EHX Green Russian Big Muff reissue, a Visual sound Open Road, a Joyo JF-09 trem pedal and a Donner echo square mini delay. The Texas Heat sounds great in my Bandit too. Eminence rocks.5If you know what you're looking for, you have a better chance of getting it.As with many of us, I put this speaker in a first-generation Fender Super Champ XD, which I bought to play guitar through (of course) but at this point I am mainly using to amplify (don't laugh) a cello with an cheap acoustic guitar pickup stuck on the front of it. I had tried various other options including the JBL Eon that I use as a vocal monitor. It's wonderful for that, but the cello sounded like fingernails on a blackboard. The Champ (using the Acoustasonic amp model) had a better tone, but not great, and was a bit wanting in the output department. In the course of my "research", I started reading reviews of the Rajin' Cajun which indicated that it might be just the thing- for this particular application. And it is- more output, smoothed out the highs, tightened the lows and warmed up the mids. Perfect- for this; but if you need the classic Fender jangle, you might want to consider just upgrading your amp, because this speaker will attenuate that sound, at least a little. It's a darn good speaker, but it may or may not be what you need.5Shame on Amazon!Don't buy speakers used from Amazon. had some success with Emanince they make great products. This was one of only 10" ones I could get from Amazon. Some one received a bad one and sent it back to Amazon. It looked fine read 7.5 ohms meter. The other 3 brand new ones read 7.8 ohms. I put 4 speakers in ran in a series/parallel cabinet and blown-up my output transformer. I tried them individually in a different amplifier the brand new ones were great. However, the used one would barely work. I quickly powered down my Amplifier. Shame on Amazon for restocking bad products and selling them as used. Someone sent back a bad speaker and Amazon sold it to me.1Good Speaker - Inhances all aspects of yoru EQIt's not going to make a gigantic "blow you away" type of change to your rig. But, it is a moderately nice upgrade. It is noticeable and does really make you ramp pop more. I didn't notice a warmer low end on its own, or smoother highs, etc. etc. I noticed everything (my entire EQ range) was effected positively; everything is punchier, warmer, and more in your face. But like I said, its not this amazing life changing difference. However, coupled together with some nicer quality tubes (like mullard, tung-sol gold pins, etc.) now we're talking! That's what's going to blow you away. Try to upgrade as much as you can, and the cumulative effect is really going to make the difference. I completely re-vamped by hot rod deluxe (had a buddy change out some circuits and pots and stuff), I upgraded the speaker and messed around with different types of tubes, and it sounds really really nice. I also have a delta blues 15" and hot rod deville that'll I'll start doing upgrades on, but right now my deluxe currently blows the two away on sound quality.4I wasn't satisfied with the sound on my Fender Superchamp X2 at ...I wasn't satisfied with the sound on my Fender Superchamp X2 at anything louder than bedroom volume. For that, it's a great little amp, especially on the clean channel. I'm not much for the software connections and all of the modeling stuff, but it's nice to have reverb and delay on board without carrying pedals around. Clean channel with a little reverb is a great sound on that amp. After reading a bunch of reviews and mod suggestions for the amp, I decided to give the Ragin Cajun a try. Like many others, I was a little disappointed when I first fired it up. The overall sound was much deeper, but it was stiff and brittle. I read some suggestions that the speaker needed to get broken in, so I cranked it up and played it at length several different times. As I did, the speaker sounded like it got better every time I played it. Now, the Superchamp is my favorite amp for clean tones and has some excellent driven sounds as well. It sounds a lot bigger than it's small form factor and the tone is excellent. For under $100, it was a great upgrade.5Transforms Fender Blues Junior!Really helps the Fender Blues Junior. Straight out of the box, it took the harshness off the top end, and it gave the bass and mids a much needed boost. The bridge pickup on my Strat is a lot more usable now. This speaker really does a lot for your BJ, and it was the easiest upgrade you could do. I have BillM mods on the way, and I'll post again once those are installed.Overall, I would highly recommend this speaker.5Great Fender Blues Jr Mod!First of all, it takes about 5 minutes with a Philips screwdriver to change the speaker so no excuses. Although I "liked" the Jensen speaker that came stock from the factory, this speaker gives me the tone I was looking for. Warm and clear and maybe a bit louder too. The shrillness of the bridge pickup on my Strat is under control and I can crank the preamp way up. Ok so this may sound odd but if you're looking for a warmer "Oooooooo" voicing and less of the Bright "Eeeeeeeeee" then try this speaker.5Perfect for Fender Blues Jr.Installed in a Fender Blues Jr. along with some cooler JJ tubes to get maximum headroom. Speaker isn't for metal, which is fine with me. For country and blues, this is an excellent choice. Takes the harshness out of the stock Fender speaker in the higher frequencies, but doesn't reduce the highs or muddy them up. I wouldn't say the speaker is warm (ie: it isn't bottom heavy) it is just fairly flat and smooth. Doesn't sound like it is coloring the sound of the amp, just reproducing it. No brainer upgrade if you run clean to moderately crunchy and want definition and clarity. It does seem a bit louder than the stock speaker, too. I went from liking my Blues Jr. to loving it. The difference is obvious.5Meh... too much hype, did not live up to it...This speaker gets so much hype, especially for the Fender SuperChamp XD /X2. Truth is, it ditches a lot of the higher freq. that Fenders are known for. What I ended up doing is taking the stock Eminence/Fender speaker that was the OEM from my X2 and put is in a slant 1x10 cab made of pine. Holy smokes, what a tonal difference vs it being part of the combo. The Ragin Cajun is not a bad speaker but truth be told, it is NOT better than the stock speaker unless you are trying to get rid of the Fender Glassy highs.3Perfect for Fender Blues Deluxe ReissueThis speaker has vastly improved the sound of my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue. As many have written the BDRI stock speaker is not very good - even though it is also a Eminence speaker, made to Fender specs. The Cannabis Rex really does tighten up the bottom and tame the highs. I purchased the amp primarily for use with my full sized L-5 style jazz guitar, but I found that with the stock speaker I had to dial back the treble and bass to next to nothing, and use a 5 band Parametric EQ and Compressor to get a musical sound out of the amp. Having done my research I fully expected to replace the stock speaker and I got the amp at such a good price that it was worth it to me. The C-Rex does not disappoint and at a great price. The stock speaker has a more traditional tweed sound, but was so piercing and flabby at the bottom as to be very limited without the use of the compressor and EQ noted above, whereas my goal is to plug and play - guitar, cable, amp.The Cannabis Rex did exactly what I needed - enabled me to get rid of the off-board EQ and compressor and allowed me to actually use the EQ on the amp. Now I can get a vintage tweed tone by scooping the mid a little or a darker blackface tone using the EQ on the amp alone. Also the speaker give me significantly more clean headroom on the amp. Though they say the C-Rex is louder than the stock speaker I found that I was able to turn up higher because the tighter lows reduced feedback and the tamed highs made for a much smoother sound.I also use a mid 70s Telecaster with a Fender noiseless lipstick pickup in the neck position and a very hot lead pickup (I think it is a Seymour Duncan, but I changed it so long ago I don't recall) and the C-Rex sounded very musical with that as well. Telecasters can be painfully trebley, but not so with the C-Rex.Bottom line is if you want tight lows, smooth highs, and the ability to actually use the full range of EQ settings of the amp then this is a great choice.5
