Customer Reviews

A hidden gem for artists. Not a gimmick.I never tried black paper before, until my arm was twisted by Honey. I am so glad she did. Great stuff, nice effects, and high quality paper that should last quite a while.I ve already replenished my supply.Dry pastels are ok, as are some acrylics, but the absolute best medium is oil pastel. Wow. Some fantastic stuff. I sketched 6 outdoor and people sketches5Quite decent black sketch pad, nice with colored pencilsThe first thought a lot of people probably have when they see this black sketch paper is that it's just construction paper, but no. The Faber-Castell black sketch pad is much smoother, finer grained, and darker black than construction paper. I happened to have both on hand, so I took a photo of them side by side. The photo is pretty good at showing the difference. On this, I've played with chalk pastels which work well, and colored pencils (I use Prismacolor Premier) which work even better. The pencils draw smoothly and the black background is a pleasant change. It isn't the finest black paper out there, but it's nice for what it is. It's a decent starting paper if you want to play with drawing on black.4Misleading product images... Nothing like in the pictures!I've been a Faber-Castell fan since I was a child. Their products have been consistently good and reliable. Well... until now. This is my first disappointment, and boy, is it disappointing! The colors are nothing like what's pictured here. Construction paper in general tends to have very weak, pale, neutered colors, so, going for brand trust and the photos of bright colors on the product page here on Amazon, I bought Faber-Castell's construction paper pad hoping it would have real colors like it boasts it does. Well, it absolutely does not! I put them side by side next to the cheap convenience store construction paper, and the colors are exactly the same! Pale, diluted, weak. There is no red. Only a pinkish thing. All the colors look faded like they've sat out in the sun all summer. Not only are they ugly on their own, but they are a lie, since the image on the cover of the pad shows real reds and real colors!!! Faber-Castell, what happened?!? Why are all brands of construction paper so poor in their colors? What happened to real colors?1Not Recommended for WatercolorI tried it .... as its cellulose (wood based) It didn't work well for Watercolor.... dries instantly and lifting without damaging the paper was virtually impossible. Wet on wet washes are impossible as this paper has little to no sizing and the paper soaked up all of the water before I was done wetting it. Not to mention the buckling..... even taped down the paper buckled badly.... it has a decent tooth to it and is fairly thick so it would work for Pastels (which I tried, with decent results)..... It would work for Sketching, Markers, Colored pencils and even Water Color pencils ( Line & Light Wash only.....) .... As for Watercolor,, save yourself the frustration and get Bee paper if you're looking for an affordable Watercolor paper on which to practice.....2Best finger paint paper so far, thin but strongI have tried the Crayola and the Melissa and Doug finger paint papers also.So far, this Faber Castell paper is the best of the three when using finger paint and lots of water as, even though the paper gets slightly stretched and wavy, it's not as bad as the other two, and it goes back to nearly flat once dry.The paper is surprisingly thin but holds the paint well. Once dry, I recommend pressing the kids' master-pieces under heavy books to finish smoothing the wrinkles. It tears easily and, if you secure it to the table with tape, it will tear when you remove it...This paper is glossy and works well even with paint that does not have a lot of pigments such as the Crayola finger paint. The pad states that it is 50% recycled but it is nonetheless very white and very bright/glossy.So far, this is our favourite finger paint paper and I will probably buy it again. Be ready for a big paint mess!4White prismacolour colored pencil will not show upThe paper is abundant and good quality. However, I don't think it allows light colors to show up very well. A white prismacolor pencil will not show up very well on this paper :(3Great quality for construction paperI thought this was a handsome tablet when I first received it. I tried several different coloring types on this paper and most worked well. My colored metallic markers worked well, as did my Derwent Artist's pencils. The whites really stood out and my blacks seemed blacker. My gel pens are cheap and did not do so well. The metallics seemed to show up better than the glitters. I then tried my metallic watercolor pencils and wetted my samples. The colors are very good. My wax-based pencils did not fare as well. I like the paper but, at this price, I will use sparingly.4Black Art PaperI'm a doodler and wanted black paper to give my doodles a new look. It is art quality paper. Unlike plain black paper that seems to just suck up the colors without getting the desired effect this paper keep the color on the page and gives your drawings that special look. It's just what I wanted and I'm sure my doodling will look great.5AMAZING!I'm a watercolorist and bought this pad of "90%" cotton paper for $6.50. My plan was to use it for color sketches, then mastering that, paint it on "the good paper." It arrived, I was dubious there was any cotton in it at all. The description read "95%" cotton when I bought it. It reads 90% today. A week has passed and it lost 5%? True to my doubt, I painted one sheet of a purse necessary in one of my compositions. It sucked up the paint like it was chalk, and laid down a horrible texture that felt like rubber almost. I'm pretty stupid because I didn't listen to my intuitions, and bought a pad of paper with a kids orange goldfish on it. Even if it's for kids, pass on it. Waste of $6.50. I doubt Amazon will even publish this review, which is sad for people who don't have money to waste by reading honest reviews. Good luck.1Don t buy it!!!TERRIBLE! There s no weight to this paper. It s smooth, it s deep black-has slight brown undertone I think. I hate this paper. It is so flimsy. Colors don t show up well on it. (I know this because I tried oil pastels on another brand of thicker black paper and they showed up better on the other brand.) Not impressed at all. Way overpriced! I thought Faber-Castell would be if better quality. Guess I ll be using this with white gel pen because that s all this is good for.1
