Customer Reviews

Wow! Great Sounding Pickup!I was very impressed with the sound of this pickup but not surprised. Fishman is one of the best there is but honestly, I wasn't expecting this PUP to sound as good as it does. I always mic my acoustic guitars and nothing beats a mic for recording acoustic guitars but using this along with a mic makes for a huge sound. This single coil PUP sounds so good I've decided I am going to buy the Humbucker as well. Unfortunately, this doesn't fit any of my classical guitars as the soundhole is too small. It fits standard sized dreads no problem so keep that in mind when ordering.5If you get low ouput, have your action adjusted.I have two of the humbucking versions of the Fishman NEO-D pickups so I can't comment on the single coil version. I use them on my Eastman E20D 6-string and my Guild F212 12-string and I've been very happy with them. I play them through a Fishman Loudbox Artist acoustic amp and, lately with the new Fishman A1X Four effects pedal (I think I was the first person to receive an A1X Four when they came into production.)I won't go into why I like these pickups because it's all been said in other reviews but I want to comment on a complaint I see in some of the reviews here. That is, that some people are getting very weak output. I get very strong output and I think I figured out what the problem is for those who get low output. I'm guessing their action isn't adjusted properly and the pickup is too far from the strings. I've had the action on both my guitars set by an incredible luthier and, as I said, I get very strong output from these pickups. So, for anyone having that problem, here's a couple suggestions: 1) Get your action adjusted. 2) If, for some reason, you can't get the proper distance from the strings to the pickup by adjusting the action, put a spacer in the top gap of the pickup that slides over (and tightens) onto the guitar top. You could use another layer of cork or felt or whatever works for you and doesn't damage your guitar's finish. 3) I suspect that most people don't know that magnetic pickups are designed to work at their optimum with acoustic guitar strings. There is one company that makes a special set of strings for acoustic guitars that are using magnetic pickups. This is something I didn't know either until recently. However, I'm getting good results with my acoustic strings (Elixir nanowebs) so I haven't felt it necessary to try those special strings but I might someday just out of curiosity. Apparently, the metals used in acoustic guitar strings don't work the best with magnetic pickups. It's something to check out but I think the first thing you should do is check your action. I haven't measured the distance of the strings on my guitar to the pickup but just looking at them right now, I would say the distance is about the thickness of a quarter.5Low volume when recordingPurchased this pickup a few weeks ago. My big issue is that the output is ridiculously low when recording. Im running it through an outboard pre into my DAW using reaper. I have used many other electric guitars and mics through the same pre input and the input levels are fine. With this pickup however i have to dial the input volume up to 80-90% just to get a workable volume signal. I know its not an active pickup, but all my other guitars have passives as well and no issues. Weird.2but I've been using it with a Fishman Loudox Mini for a month and the combination has been wonderful. Sound seems very un-colored to my ears and I have had no feedback issues sitting 6 feet from my amp.The only "con", and only a minor one, is that the clamps seem to cover very little wood on each side of the sound hole and to keep it from slipping I had to tighten the screws a lot - this in not a "finger tight" situation. So much so that I am a little anxious about crushing the wood or damaging the finish. That has not happened yet, but another 2-3 mm on each side would solve the problem by giving each clamp a little more guitar to clamp to. In any case, I still highly recommend the unit for it's sound and build qualities.5This pickup works great! I use it to record guitar directly into ...This pickup works great! I use it to record guitar directly into my DAW. I haven't had any problems with humming. Installation is quick and easy. If you want to get the pickup closer or further from the strings, then it wouldn't be a big problem to remove the corking material, or fill in with some cardboard until you're happy with the level of pickup. Unfortunately, there's no way to get the magnet closer to individual strings for a solid frequency response. But then again, if that's a big deal for you, you can fix it in EQ.5Great Sound. Easy to Install. Incredible Price! A Guitar Pickup Trifecta! There are many great pickup options for acoustic guitars these days. My absolute favorite pickup, all things considered is the K&K soundboard line of pickups. No battery, no ugly and superfluous controls added to the guitar, just pure perfect sound. However, the quality of sound produced by the K&K is highly dependent on the installation. Since my hands are way too large to enter the soundhole and accurately place the pickups, I have to rely on someone else to do it. One installer did a great job but said never again. A second installer (2nd guitar) did not spend the necessary time to properly locate the pickups so the sound is not as great as it could be. So...Lately I have gone the soundhole route. I own the M1 LR Baggs soundhole pu, and it is great. I like that it is designed (strap jack feature) to connect to the amp cable through the strap button at the rear of the guitar. But, it is a bit pricey ($130+) and is rather bulky. Sounds good though. This time around I decided to try the Fishman Neo-D and I am about to order another one. It sounds amazing. I have tried it direct to the mixer, to the mixer through a DI box (UltraSound DI+), and direct to a guitar amp. Either way it sounds great. What is amazing is that it retains the character of the guitar, not just picking up the strings. I know, that is impossible right? I tested it using headphones thus blocking out the natural sound of the guitar, and I could hear the nuances of the guitar acoustics. It is well made, I appreciate the cork pads on the clamp surfaces. My only gripe, and I knew this going in, the cable extends outside the soundhole and down the front. I route around and past my strap to kind of get it out of the way, but I prefer the LR Baggs M1 method (strapjack). Also, and maybe it is just the guitar I am using, the pickup is a bit narrow for the soundhole, I had to position it at the very top of the soundhole.Regardless of the incredible price ($40), this is an excellent pickup and I plan to order a second for another guitar.PS: After writing this I forgot to mention that I purchased the single coil version. I have not experienced hum and it is perfectly quiet,5Does What It's Supposed ToWith so many similar products to choose from, it's hard to decide but I'm glad I selected the Fishman pickup. Reproduction is clean and very acoustic sounding - which is what I wanted. I have four acoustic guitars, and didn't want to go broke installing pickups in each one, so being able to move the pickup to different instruments is a big plus for me. I like how it secures to the guitar sound hole with cork pads - but I wish Fishman had devised a way to tighten and loosen the pads without need for a screwdriver each time (like a spring loaded clap mechanism that can be activated with built-in button?).4Nice tone !I bought this pickup to install on a 70 s era Washburn acoustic to keep it all original. Although there s no volume control, I can run it through an active DI box to boost the somewhat weak signal. The pickup is staying on the guitar and I thought the cork lining held the pickup in place without damaging the sound hole. The sound of the pickup is very mellow with no interference like you might get with a single coil pickup - exactly what I was hoping for.5A Great Pickup with some minor drawbacks.I bought this pickup for use in a church band. My acoustic is a Yamaha FG-800 and has no electronics whatsoever. So I was looking for some kind of pickup that would work and not require professional installation. I ve run this pickup through two different preamps - The Fishman Tonedeq and the Boss GT-1.Installation: When I first installed it, I just loosened my strings and was able to get it on in the right place. Only took about 10 minutes with a small Phillips screwdriver.Sound: I ve tried this through a Marshall MGL30, Fishman Tonedeq, and Boss GT-1. Assuming you have some type of preamp that is specific to acoustics, you can get some GREAT tones from this. My best tone was using an acoustic processor with reverb+delay on my Boss GT-1. It sounds great.Live Use: When I did use this in our church band, the pickup did have some noise. Our audio team commented on it and asked if I could try to fix it. I ended up using a noise gate on my Boss GT-1 and it worked perfectly. This is a single coil, so obviously you may get some noise. But for the money, the pickup is a great deal.I really wish the cord was short and just had a female TRS connector. It is annoying having a permanently attached cable to the guitar. But for $40 you get what you pay for.I may have a luthier modify the cable to only 3 feet and swap the male connector for a female. We ll see.4Pros Easy installation Long Cable Sound is warm 'Inexpensive' Durable Cons ...To start with, I'm left handed and my guitar is as well. My on-board pre-amp failed within 4-5 years of purchasing my guitar (thanks Ibanez-I've read several complaints about the premature failure of your AEQ-SST pre-amp) and the cost of replacement almost equaled the original cost of the guitar. No pick-ups within my price range specified left or right, so I was hoping there would be no difference in how this sounds if installed right side up on a left or right handed guitar. Turns out, there is a little difference, but not so much that I'd give this a negative review .If this is installed in a standard way (placed closer to the headstock side of the sound hole) on a left handed guitar, you get more 'twang' on the G, B & high E strings and less volume of the low E, A and D - not favorable for me in terms of sound. If this is installed upside down on a left handed guitar, then the sound seems much more balanced and warm as described in most of the reviews here. The only problem is that the angled ends are designed for installation on a right handed guitar, so I've installed this further down the sound hole, towards the bridge, upside down. Gets in the way a bit, but a fair compromise for the price. Consider this carefully if you plan on installing on a left handed guitar. Finally, I agree with other reviewers who say that the sound is low. Gotta turn the volume and/or gain higher than usual, but I guess that's the humbucking design.ProsEasy installationLong CableSound is warm'Inexpensive'DurableConsDesigned for right handed guitars ONLY (seems so to me at least)Sound is low4
