Description

Amazon.com Exceptional in every way, the Blind Boys of Alabama's Christmas record is a must have for Christmas music fans of all ages and musical persuasions. Go Tell It on the Mountain features the legendary gospel group singing with some of the most renowned artists in the music world who share gospel, R&B and folk roots. Thirteen tracks deep, every song is a gift, offering such compelling new arrangements and dynamic vocal performances of traditional hymns, carols and mistletoe pop standards that some will seem like you're hearing them for the first time. With guest stars such as Solomon Burke, Tom Waits, Shelby Lynne, Chrissie Hynde, Aaron Neville, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, the immortal jazz man Les McCann and others, it's impossible to list all the highlights. Suffice to say, the blistering blues-funk rendering of "Away in a Manger" with George Clinton, Robert Randolph and the Blind Boys, along with a smoldering duet of "The Christmas Song" by Shelby Lynne and Clarence Fountain from the group, will have you shoutin' from the mountaintop again and again. -- Martin Keller

Customer Reviews

Gifted groupA friend told me about this group and I'm so glad he did. What a beautiful sound.5Great! Southern soul for ChristmasI'm listening to this as I type. This is great Southern Gospel type of music. These Christmas songs have been reworked to have some real oomph. The guests are good, even surprising. Aaron Neville is a pleasure on "Joy to the World," and there is something engaging about Chrissie Hynde and Richard Thompson's "In the Bleak Midwinter." Good choice for driving music. This is a CD that adds a fresh and yet old-fashioned flavor to your collection.5Wanted a digital copyJust like my Album from many years ago5Sounds of non verbal vocal ramblings.Based on previous performances, I expected better. Full of sounds of non verbal vocal ramblings. Annoying.1Two StarsIn my opinion it's over-produced. The re-recording engineers got in the way of the music. Very pop.2Blind Boys of Alabama, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! We've all heard the Blind Boys of Alabama, however, you have not heard them until you've listened to this CD. "Go Tell It On The Mountain" is one of the best rousing new Christmas CD's.The Blind Boys of Alabama started their singing group in 1939 at the Alabama Institute of the Negro Blind. They had sung for 35 years before they became known outside of the South. In the 1990's one of their gospel songs caught on and from then on they have been on the cutting edge of gospel. Now,most of the Blind Boys are in their 70's and singing strong and loud with Praise from the Lord. Hallelujah!!This CD is #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart, and it is no surprise. Most of the songs are well known except for "I Pray On Christmas" Solomon Burke is the guest soloist on this song, and will have you bopping in the aisle. The mix of his fabulous voice with the Blind Boys marks the tune. The Best is, of course, "Go Tell It On The Mountain" with soloist, Tom Waits. Tom Waits is a favorite of mine, and he and the Blind Boys 'get it on down'. My head is bopping and fingers snapping as I listen to it and scribe these words.Michael Franti sings "Little Drummer Boy" with the best dum, dum dum, dum,da, da ,da, dum I can remember. The Blind Boys fill in with supreme tenderness."In The Bleak Midwinter" with Chrissie Hynde and Richard Thompsonbrings back memories of Olde England. Great voice that Chrissie.Aaron Neville sings the joy right into "Joy To The World" as only Aaron can. A superb rendition of the South."The Christmas Song" with Shelby Lynne and Clarence Fountain is as good as the original. A unique arrangement that has me singing with them.George Clinton and Robert Randolph's rendition of "Away In A Manger" IS the absolute best I have heard. A little jazz mixed in with the gospel will have you stompin' your feet.Les McCannn and Me'shell Ndegeocello bring it on home with"Oh Come All Ye Faithful" and "White Christmas". So very fine. The Blind Boys of Alabama, (Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter, George Scott, Joey Williams, Ricky McKinnie, Bobby Butler, and Tracy Pierce) sing the finale with "Silent Night".I must recommend this CD- it is one of the most original Christms CD's- I absolutely love it- reminds us of what Christmas is all about without all of the glitz. If you are into rhythm and blues with gospel and a little country all thrown in together, this CD is for you.The Blind Boys of Alabama will be featured in a PBS special singing from this Christms CD with many of the soloists as their guests. Prepare for it by listening to this CD over and over.Hallelujah, Brothers and Sisters! prisrob5PerfectThe Blind Boys are in rare form here, duets with popular singers that are incredibly bright and new. Some of the songs stand out more than others but mostly they are awesome! I've bought alot of Christmas albums, thinking the songs will put a new twist on an old tune only to be disappointed once again. No disappointments here! This is one CD that will be listened to many times, copied on the computer, and the ipod, so that I can hear it again. Wow what a tribute to the greatest gift ever given! A winner here!5The music was great, but the physical copy was notI like the music, but the packaging is in a cardboard sleeve (not a jewel box) and those scratch the discs pretty easily. Also, the CD itself skips on the first song and then the track listings do not match up with the songs. The beginning of track 3 is about halfway through the second song and the remaining indexes are also incorrect. This has happened on two copies of this CD I have purchased. There was no available auto-rip for this disc from Amazon so I was unable to even burn a correct CD from the mp3 files onto a new disc and am forced to listen to the first track skipping and the remaining tracks not starting at the indicated track positions. Since this happened twice to me and once to another reviewer it appears to be a common error.2I was really disappointed in their rendition of "Go Tell It On The ...I didn't care for any of the music. I was really disappointed in their rendition of "Go Tell It On The Mountain".This is not my idea of gospel music...my age probably has a lot to do with it.It will be donated to a thrift store.2good albumI saw these guys for the first time on The Colbert Show and was impressed with their sound. Album is very energetic, great, rousing sound for Christmas. Love the different arrangements, especially "Little Drummer Boy."4
