Customer Reviews

The right soundI've been looking for ways to produce a more lush sound on the autoharp along with reducing the noise caused by pick/string contact. These picks, with a few modifications, are the best I've found so far. Durability is also a real plus.5I love it. I would highly recommendI found I was constantly trying to adjust my flat pics when I played and that was distracting from my strumming and fingering. This has allowed me to focus more on the important aspects of my guitar playing. I love it. I would highly recommend. The large size fits my thumb perfectly. I think it would be easy enough for them to put a sizing chart on here. It would have taken out some of the initial hesitation of ordering a set that is fairly expensive as far as pics go, but as long as it fits, I think it is definitely worth it. I'm a beginner but I don't see any reason a seasoned pro wouldn't like these either.5Great quality!I had played with a flat pick for 30+ years and always seemed to wear down my pointer fingernail due to the nature of holding the flat pick while on the down strum of the strings. So I decided to alter my picking technique and try a thumb pick. I went through several different brands but found that they all cracked at the bend just after a week or two. I looked around online for thumb pick reviews and found Golden Gate by chance. It had many good reviews for being durable and so I decided to try them. I trimmed the point down with a toe nail clipper and filed smooth (I play a Telecaster and the long point hits the pickguard while strumming and chicken pickin'). All I can say is that I am sticking with this brand from now on. It wears on the thumb snug but not tight, is made from very heavy and durable material and so far hasn't even hinted on cracking at the bend. Excellent thumb picks and well worth the money!5These work best for me.I ordered a few different thumbpicks to try. These work the best for me. They fit snug and comfortable and don't wiggle around like the others when I am strumming my autoharp. I also tried them on my guitar.and my dulcimer. I ordered size medium. I like them best for autoharp. All the styles work ok on guitar. Thumbpicks just get in the way on a dulcimer. That said, picks in general are very personal. They don't cost much and it is a good idea to try different ones till you find those that work best for you.5Nice attackVery nice item. I play finger-style and use a thumb pick. I was skeptical initially but I think these are harder than most and do produce a clearer tone with a very nice attack. However, be sure to specify which ones you want as initially I was not sent what was in the picture. Customer service was very helpful and replaced them. I'm glad I went to the trouble, they are worth it. Also, I found they are sized a little small, so if you are an average guy you might want to go with a large. Medium would not fit me.4Very Nice Thumb PicksI'm rating these picks at 5 stars because they really are nice picks. I got some because I've always finger picked without picks, and decided to try using a thumb pick. These GP-11 picks are well made and attractive, feel good, and obviously they keep my thumb from getting sore. I just can't get the hang of thumb picks, after thumb picking without one for fifty years. I won't deduct points just because of personal preference. I know at least one finger picker who absolutely loves these picks.5Great Pick for larger hands, less breakage, worth the $$Great thumbpicks that fit my extremely fat thumbs better than most. I bought both these and the Golden Gate Pearloid and like these a bit better between the two. I'm sure that there may be some discernible difference in tone compared to plastic but I can't hear it. Stays positioned well and stays put when you change the angle of attack for different effect. But most important to note is that these don't break nearly as much as plastic picks so that needs to be figured in when you think about the cost. To me they're absolutely worth it. I have not broken one yet, actually.5FINALLY!After going through all the other brands I finally splurged on the golden gates and I'm glad I did. These things hold up. The sound is fine. They file down and shape well. The thumb loop stays strong and doesn't fatigue and eventually break the way most plastic thumb picks do.My only gripe - I wish they sold these in a three pack. I would've tried them earlier on and never would have bothered with the others. Also, I have gorilla thumbs and an XL size would also be nice, but these while very tight, still fit.5Better than my Ernie Ball picksI bought these on a whim, previously using Ernie Ball medium thumbpicks. On first sight, these are better looking and once I put this Golden Gate pick on my thumb, the EB picks went in the trash. Why? These are better fitting for my thumb, they are a touch smaller than the EB picks. I like my thumb picks fairly tight. There's something about the contour of these picks that's more thumb anatomical than the Balls or Dunlops. Most key, these are with a slightly textured material, so they stay put and do not rotate; much better than the Ernie Balls or the Dunlop picks that I've used in the past, especially when hands get sweaty. Some of this ability to stay secure has to do with the matte finish of these picks, as opposed to the slippery plastic of the Competitors. Note: Golden Gate also makes a Confetti thumbpick, and one called Pearloid; although I've never seen either in person, from the photos they appear smoother looking, as though they might move more in the thumb. I'm sticking with Ivoroid.I like my thumb picks short, and had no issues filing these down, just as I do with my EB picks. So glad I tried these on a whim. They're more expensive, but are worth that expense. Frankly, if placed side-by-side so that a person could try them on, I'm fairly sure most everyone would choose Golden Gates over Balls and Dunlops. I've not tried other picks, such as Fred Kelly, sorry.5My new favourite thumbpick! Finally, a thumbpick the fits comfortably on my fat thumb, but doesn't feel like it's loose enough to move when I strike a string. The only thumpick I have been able to use reliably is a German-made Geipel metal pick. The Golden Gate GP-10's slide on easily and do not move. The extension intended to strike the string is long enough to catch the desired string easily. I'm so pleased to have discovered these thumbpicks . . . I've already purchased a sufficient number to replace any I might lose or misplace.5
