Description

Amazon.com A terrific sampler of greatest hits from the heyday of girl groups and the Brill Building--except that none of the songs are actually from that era. What we have here is an incredible simulation--from Allison Anders' unjustly overlooked 1996 movie about the tempestuous life and career of a Carole King- like singer-songwriter (the magnificent Illeana Douglas) who spends years writing for others before finding her own voice. But instead of just licensing the old Shirelles' recordings of Goffin-King hits, the filmmakers came up with the brilliant idea of doing original songs by combining the sensibilities of contemporary artists and their songwriting forebears. So, for example, Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach teamed up to write and perform the power- ballad "God Give Me Strength" (although I wish they'd also included Douglas's even more moving version from the picture); Leslie Gore teams with Larry Klein and David Baerwald for "My Secret Love" (performed by Miss Lily Banquette of Combustible Edison); Gerry and Louise Goffin team with Baerwald for "Between Two Worlds" (performed by Sean Colvin); J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. writes and sings some Brian Wilson/Beach Boys-type stuff ("Take a Run at the Sun," "Don't You Think It's Time"), and so on. Buy the record; see the movie. You won't be disappointed. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews

Four Starsgood4FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASUREI recently saw this movie, just reading about it the other week on some website. I rented it from Netflix, and was totally blown away by the music - just had to have the soundtrack.I was expecting a bit of a wait with the mailing, and was very surprised that I received the merchandise five days after ordering it.I am a very happy buyer!5NOT WHAT WE WERE EXPECTINGMy husband watched the movie and really liked the sound track. He said he would like to have it , but when it arrived, it was not the same as the movie. Different artists were performing the songs and he just didn't like it because it wasn't what he was expecting. If I could return it, I would.2Old GemLike the movie, liked the music.5Kristen Vigard's version of God Give Me StrengthKristen Vigard did Illeana Douglas' (Denise's) singing in "Grace of My Heart."Her versions of "Man From Mars" and "Boat On the Sea" are on the soundtrack.Like a lot of reviewers here, I was disappointed that Vigard's version of "God Give Me Strength" was omitted in favor of Elvis Costello's.Kristen Vigard's version (albeit with a more spare arrangement) is on her own album, "God, Loves and Angels." It can be found on I-Tunes and on her own website.4Five Starsgreat cd5LOVE DOESN'T EVER FAIL..MUST if you've ever been heart brokenJust listen to the words to the song==Love Doesn't Ever Fail Us.. If you have ever had your heart broken. This song will just kill you. It is so TRUE. Love doesn't ever fail it's us that fail love. It sounds just like he Everly Brothers but it is The William Brothers. I have collected music for over 45 years and never heard of them. WOW they blew me away. I just happened to watch the movie yesterday and can't get the song off my mind. So I have spent the whole day looking for it. There is no single of course. So I bought the Soundtrack Album just to get "Love Doesn't Ever Fail Us." I thought the song ("So Sad" to see good love go bad) by the Everly Brothers was good. It is GREAT but this out sells it for me.Please give a listen to "Love Doesn't Ever Fail Us" Never have I had a song hit me sooooooooo hard. Just love love love love this song. It's #1 with me. And I have at least 40,000 songs. My husband and I have collected music for years. We have around 10,000 45's and around 5,000 at least albums and have no idea how many CD's or others such as tape's also. Music is our passion and we have almost every song in the Billboard top 100 and many others that did not make the top 100. We just love music. Me mostly Rock N Roll,Doo Woop,BubbleGum,Beach Music etc. My husband just loves ALL music. Sincerely do listen to the song. But not if you just had a break up it may push you over the edge. Or it will remind you it is US who really ruins LOVE...5Love it,but....I have been "obsessed with this movie since it first came out,so, when I saw the soundtrack, I had to have it ! I do love the music, but I wanted the track of "God give me strength" from the movie, not the Elvis Costello version (even though it is very good). Why do "they" always do that ?4All but one song...Being a fan of the movie made for a small step to buy the movie soundtrack. I think the songs for the soundtrack are fantastic. It may not be common knowledge that Illeana Douglas didn't sing her own songs in the movie or on the album. They were sung wonderfully by a singer named Kristen Vigard. The only reason I give this soundtrack 4 stars and not 5 is because the one track that I feel was the heart and soul of the movie ("God Give Me Strength") was performed on the soundtrack by Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach (who wrote it) and not Illeana Douglas/Kristen Vigard who perform it powerfully in the movie. Might be a bit picky but realism and quality mean everything.4The words in the songs have a lot of meaningI like the movie a lot and it takes me back to when songs were good and loved that time than most of the music they play now. So i liked the music from the movie and that s why i wanted the soundtrack. Thank you. I listen to it in my car all the time5
