Customer Reviews

You get what you pay for!I really tried to like it, but the "cigar box" body of the guitar moved around while I was trying to play it and the low G string had dead spots. I'd rather attempt to make my own.1For $35, a great player and a humbling history lessonThis is a great little instrument at an amazing price point! Jumping on the DIY homemade cigar box guitar-making craze is this faux CBG (made in China with a cardboard body) with a built-in pickup and instructional CD. The Hinkler has three strings in an open G tuning. It has no frets and a high action which means it's meant to be played only with the enclosed glass slide.Set up is easy: insert some string-guide ferrules and add strings to the guitar. I used a guitar tuner to place the bridge for better intonation up the neck (e.g., the high G string should be "G" open and at the 12th fret).bThe Hinkler is lighter than a ukelele and comfortable to play. It has a thick rectangular neck sanded smooth, and a very short scale so you don't have to make your arm move a great distance. I added a pin strap near the string end pen ferrules so I could play with a uke-size strap.Playing the Hinkler is a humbling history lesson. You feel the origins of blues in the shimmery sound of glass sliding up and down across steel strings. It's an homage to people long ago who used cigar boxes, broom handles, pop bottle necks, and whatever was around their house to fashion instruments. Being poor did not stop creative individuals from making great music!5Not bad, but you'll quickly outgrow itPretty much slide only as the action is so high that fretting actually bends the strings out of tune. You could replace the bolts it comes with as the bridge and nut to lower the strings. You'll need to retune it every few minutes of hard playing, but for a basic tool to learn some slide, it's actually not bad. It comes pretty much assembled and ready to string up.The problem is that 'real' cigar box guitars aren't really expensive to begin with. You can get nice ones with real cigar boxes for about $100 or so. Overall if you want to get into cigar box guitars, I'd suggest just spending a bit more on a real one. That said, this would make a decent gift for someone just thinking about slide guitar in general.3Incredibly fun slide guitar and a steal at this priceI haven't been able to put this thing down since I bought it. So much fun, great sound, a steal at this price. What This ISNT:A three stringed version of a 6 string fretted guitarWhat This IS:This is much more like a lap slide guitar that you can hold up tucked under your strumming elbow like a ukulele. The strings are tuned GDG, so you can one-finger bar cords up and down the neck. The strings are the three middle wrapped strings of an acoustic 6 string guitar pack (not the low E, but the three next ones up. They are light guage, its explained in the book as well. The fret markers are decals because this is meant to be played fretless, with a slide onlyThe action is very high, which makes it forgiving when learning to use a slide.(If you WANT to fret chords or notes, I imagine all you would need to do is to replace the nut and bridge bolts with smaller diameter bolts until you get the action you want, the bolts just lay across the instrument and held in place by string tension - makes it easy to adjust the intonation)The neck is actually finished very nicely, with sanded edges and a clear poly coat; but it is still a square 1x2 board instead of a rounded neck ------because when you play with a slide, you press very lightly on the strings, as opposed to gripping the neck firmly to fret awkward chord shapesThe only thing you have to "put together" are to put the little brass string ferrules in place at the bottom, string it up, put the floating nut and bridge in the clearly marked places (they are held in place by string tension), tune it up, grab the included slide and start shredding the blues. There are very complete and detailed instructions explaining all of this. The instruction book and CD could be sold for at least $15 by themselves as an intro to blues slide playing and guitar use. This guitar comes basically finished. The neck is sanded and finished with a clear coat. It is fretless, but there are fretmarker decals under the clear poly coat, so they wont ever wear off. The tuning pegs are attached, the through-neck is attached to the cardboard body, the body is already cut with F-holes and it actually sounds great acoustically.However.. IT IS ALREADY SETUP WITH AN ELECTRIC PICKUP! Its a piezo electric pickup (meaning it will acoustically pick up every bump and scrape against any part of the instrument, almost like a microphone) and there is no volume knob, which is a little annoying ... but at this price point, you can take it out of the box and plug it straight into a practice amp or headphone amp and play around with crunchy distortion, no soldering needed, no retrofitting, it is god to go out of the box. (If you want to use a practice amp, id recommend starting out the volume low and pointing the amp away from the guitar or stand back to avoid feedback.) Again, it is a cheap pickup, but having it already installed is a huge value.Speaking of box, the body is sort of an imitation cigar box. Its made of that same compressed cardboard of a cigar box (think like 2-3 layers of dense jigsaw puzzle piece cardboard) with a cigar box printed decal stuck/laminated on top. It is actually surprisingly sturdy, and the large size combined with the f-holes (sound holes) gives it a really nice volume, projection, and tone. My girlfriend is amazed at the sound I can get out of it acoustically, its great for playing in small rooms acoustically. The slide is very wide, but very thin walled, and medium length. Functionally, this makes it very light and easy to use for little hands, but will fit even the biggest finger. The trick with the slide is to put it on your ring finger and hold it between middle finger and pinky, so it doesn't matter that the slide hole diameter is large. Again, instructions are in the booklet. There are enough licks in the booklet and cd to get you started playing and improvising leads for basic 12 bar blues and blues-rock. After that I recommend checking out some Justin Johnson videos on YouTube. If I could give this thing 10 stars, I would. It's probably worth more like $60 at LEAST. You can buy a soprano uke for less, but the setup and intonation will be crap compared to this one.Only complaints is that where the neck meets the back of the body, its a little loose and makes a "stick/unstick" glue-tape sound that the pickup amplifies when I plug it in. Only a problem if I stand and hold it tucked against my body with my strumming elbow like a uke since it puts a little pressure right there, not a problem if I play sitting down with the guitar in my lap.53 strings but it's got enough to play the bluesReally great and really cheap. This is strictly for slides and slide guitar. I've been playing for decades but I never tried to learn until now and it's a great little lesson with the book and cd.4I Aboslutely Love This CHEAP fretless Cigar Box Guitar! It's my first time playing a fretless cigar box guitar or any cigar box for that matter! I absolutely love this guitar especially for the price. It took me a couple days to learn the very basics of playing this thing. I searched YouTube for "fretless 3 string guitar" "lessons" "tutorials" "scales" by the third day I was making music. Once you learn how to play it properly, you can get some incredible sounds out of it! I'm shocked at the sound quality of this thing. IT SOUNDS GREAT! It took me a couple days to get the right touch with the glass slider that is included. This is much different from playing a regular guitar.Tip: if the glass slider is loose on your finger, wrap a little napkin around your finger then slide the slider over the napkin for a better fit and more control.I haven't plugged it into an amp, I'm waiting on a patch cord I just ordered. The acoustic sound is fantastic though. If you're not using a pick though, it's a bit quiet. Still, the sound quality is exceptional. With my Amazon points I paid $20 bucks for this thing and it was money well spent! I can't put it down! The kit was super easy to put together. If you're looking for a cheap cigar box guitar to see how you like it, you can't go wrong with this kit. Includes everything you need to get started except an amplifier & patch cord. Sounds great without any amplifier though.I think I just got hooked on a new addictive hobby!5Cheap Quality. Great Sound!I picked this up because my wife wanted to learn how to play the 3-string guitar. I was hesitant at first because it looked cheap in the pictures. The guitar arrived and we unboxed it. It is a cheaply made guitar. The body is thick cardboard, the neck is a solid hardwood, the strings are good and real, it has a cheap $1 piezo pickup. With all that being said, this guitar is actually great! The sound is really good! The tuning is easy, the slide is actually glass. We are very impressed! At worse if the body gets damaged in any way do not throw this item out. The way they designed this guitar makes it a perfect parts guitar. Just go to a cigar shop and buy a cigar box for $3. Use a basic small wood saw and a couple other tools, Watch a YouTube and easily make a solid wood cigar box guitar. I assure you that with very little experience you can use this guitars neck and strings to make a new CBG. You ll just need to buy a new Piezo pickup, which is sold here on amazon for CHEAP. You can even use a metal cookie tin, lunchbox, etc to convert this into a new guitar.Out of all honesty this is a very good guitar. I give it 5-Stars because of the following. 1) The price is low, which makes it perfect for people on a budget. 2) The quality is low, but again of the body breaks you can easily rebuild it better. 3) The sound is good. 4) Perfect for any beginners that are wanting to learn the 3-String Guitar. 5) Has a great look that sets the owner apart from other cheap made guitars.5Not bad for the price. Not bad, the scale length is small. The box is paper. Not much of a kit to assemble. Plays nice and works on my amp. Was worth the money.3This is good. Slightly cheap feeling as it is made of ...This is good. Slightly cheap feeling as it is made of heavy duty cardboard covered in a plastic coating. However, it does tune up and play. It comes with a pickup so you can plug it right in to your amplifier. It is also a great price. This is perfect for someone just wanting to have a taste of slide box guitar playing without breaking the bank. My son actually wanted to make one but it was cheaper and easier to buy this first. If he still wanted to make one I would get him the supplies but he seems content with this for now. I recommend this item.4Everything you need to quickly get a feel for Cigar Box Guitar making and playing.Everything you need to quickly get a feel for Cigar Box Guitar making and playing. You don't have to do much assembly -- just put on the strings and tune it. But that's the hard, tedious part of making a Cigar Box Guitar from a kit (in my opinion). The neck is wood with the fret positions (and markers) in black ink. The body is a cardboard box covered in glossy printed paper. Sounds cheap, I know, but it's really quite solid and beautiful when you hold in it your hands. Nicely packaged, too, with good instructions written by someone who actually speaks English. They needed to say a little more about where to place the bridge, though (you put it so the distance from the nut to the 12th fret is the same as the distance from the 12th fret to the bridge, about 11-3/8 inches). You can string it up for right or left-handed players. The slide is glass and will fit most fingers. It sounds good as an acoustic instrument, and it sounds good through an amp, as well. it has a piezo pickup inside and a standard jack outside. No chord or amp, but you wouldn't expect that at this price. I didn't use the CD, but all in all, it's an EXCELLENT product at a really great price.5
