Customer Reviews

Just shy of a custom. As a gigging harp player, the majority of my "first line" harmonicas are customized by harmonica artists. Custom harps have silky playability, impressive volume, and powerful tone. That said, if you've been playing Marine Bands, Special 20s, and the lot, and you want a taste of what a custom sounds and plays like, the Crossover is an excellent entry point without the cost (or wait) for a boutique harp. Like a custom harmonica, it is louder, bolder, and easier to play than a regular diatonic. I am in the process of updating all of my "backup" harps to Crossovers. Even the best harmonicas have reeds go bad from time to time. With the Crossover, I know that if I blow a custom reed during a gig, my backup harp will be almost as good.5Amazing soundAmazing harmonica, and I've been playing Horner harmonicas for 40 years. The sound is strong and crystal-clear. I can play almost anything--from the Torelli Serenade to La Paloma, any song that fits the range of C major key and all sound great. It is small enough, so I can fits it in my small hands, and let the tremolo go. I recommend it to mature players, though, as it would be wasted on novices or young players learning to play. It's a musical instrument not a toy. Worth its price too!5twice the price, but not twice the instrumentThere were a lot of great reviews of the Crossover, however there was a 1-star review that caught my attention, reporting that it was not much different then the other popular brands out there. I have to say, after playing gigs for 30 years with mostly Marine Band blues harps and a Lee Oskar or two, I agree. I purchased a C and an A key and the first thing I noticed was that some of the middle notes on both harps need a touch of blow bend to sound in tune with a perfectly 440 tuned guitar. (I am OK with it, as it will keep my skill honed!) On the plus side I would agree that bending appears to be a bit easier out of the box. I also really like the nice fabric zipper case with the key label on the zipper pull. I am writing this review however to counter expectations one may have from reading all the 5 star reviews. In my humble opinion: twice the price, but not twice the instrument.3Great harmonica, but...Im a beginner and have been playing the special 20 for a few months. I have learned how to bend notes and learned a few scales and simple blues licks. I have been practicing my single notes and trying to figure out tongue blocking. I bought the special 20 5 pack.I then bought the crossover hoping that it would be even easier to play and maybe i could learn even faster. The crossover is a really high quality harp and i am not sorry i bought it.That being said... for a player of my skill level, i think that the special 20 is actually easier to play in a lot of ways. Its true that the holes are a little closer on the crossover. It was actually harder for me at first because i was so used to the special 20. Theyre both easy to bend on, i think the special 20 is easier but that could be because its what i learned on.If you are a new player wondering if this would be a huge step up from the special 20, from my experience, its not. Theres a reason the special 20 is the most recommended harp for beginners. If you are like me and don't really care about the money, and are sure you are going to keep playing, then by all means buy this thing, its really nice.If you are an experienced player then you dont need my advice. But from what i can tell this thing seems very high quality. It looks and feels and plays very high end.5Sweet Tone with Better Dynamic Range...Sweet Tone with Better Dynamic Range... Great out of the box harp. Much more airtight than lower end Hohners, allowing for very sweet, warm tone at low volumes for acoustic blues, while allowing you to generate significantly more volume efficiently so you can keep up when the band gets rocking without wearing yourself out--important when you're singing lead while playing. This efficiency also allows for more expressiveness and diversity in tone, all those little things you do to impact tone (changing how you cup the instrument/mic, etc) seem to have a magnified effect. Only thing to be careful of is playing too enthusiastically, since they are more airtight, heavy playing can cause reeds to fail sooner than lower end, less efficient harps. But if you know how to stay in control and you're looking for an out of the box harp that has great wood tone and excellent dynamics, I would highly recommend these!5Very sensitive...I ve had harmonicas as a child but none as nice as this. This harmonica is very sensitive and loud. You barely blow in it and it makes a sound. I don t know how durable it is but it looks to be well made. Good craftsmanship, smooth finish, materials look to be good. Some advice though...the metal covers on the outside will rust eventually if you don t wipe it down when you are done. Having said that, you aren t supposed to put spit in the thing nor should you play it after eating or drinking sugary drinks as the sugar will build up inside and cause the reeds to stick. At least drink water and or rinse out your mouth before playing. I can t imagine rusting out the cover plates but I ve seen pictures of that on how to videos on YouTube. This is a ten hole harp in C scale. It is marked as C on the cover plates and can be taken apart for service. Unlike the Marine Band classic, this model has a bamboo lacquered comb and uses screws instead of nails on the cover plates. If you drop it or bang it you might detune it.Not sure I d run it under water for cleaning. Just keep it clean and you ll be fine. Comes with a nice carry case. Don t put it in your pocket without the case, it ll eventually get lint buildup inside and it won t sound right.5Quality harmonicaNice harmonicas. I'm no expert but my father used to play the harmonica and the guitar. He can't as easily play the guitar any more as his fingers are stiffer. He had a chromatic harmonica that my there year old granddaughter got her hands on and misplaced. I figured I would get one good harmonica for my dad to play and if he got back into playing we'd see about another. It's been really good for his attitude and health to play the harmonica again. He can still do that well. Playing music is a good way to release emotion and boost your spirits. I got myself one and I've been learning to play a little. If you've had any exposure to music you can learn to play a harmonica by ear. One feature that really drew me to choose this harmonica was the option to unscrew the plate to clean the harmonica. That should make it last longer. I didn't know about the bamboo but it sounds as good as my dad's other Hohner harmonicas did. I wanted a harmonica that would sound and good and last.5Simply a fine harp! You know that saying, "you get what you pay for?" Truly a statement to heed. The only other harp model I've been successful with was the Special 20. I'm just a casual player, so it's really all I need. I had four defective Rockets in a row. After such disappointment trying to reward myself with that next-level instrument, I decided to go for the gusto and splurged on a Crossover. It's beautiful in every way and the slightest breath out or in creates gorgeous melodic chords! I do notice the holes are smaller and the slight ridge of the cover plates surrounding the comb (fools my lips into thinking the comb seems thinner), but I haven't had a problem playing it at all. It's very easy to play individual notes, and it's the first harp I've owned that I can actually bend notes with ease and quality, just a slightly different mouthfeel than the Special 20 (which I really like a lot!). After just an hour or so I'm already getting used to my new Crossover. The bamboo comb doesn't feel much different, if even really noticeable at all, than the ABS comb of the Special 20 and Rocket. If you can afford the extra $20 bucks or so, just get a Crossover. You get what you pay for!!5The Crossover seems to be a fine instrumentI have been playing harmonica since age 4, when a Marine Band cost 75cents. I have enjoyed several of the newer versions of the old harp since then, including Blues Harp, Golden Melody and Special 20 among others, but never a Crossharp. It feels fine in my hands, the bamboo finish is smooth and does not seem to warp. The sound is strong and the reeds easy to bend. I like it and after 62 years of harmonica playing, can recommend it.5CrossOver Gets a Excellent Award from mePlaying the Hohner Crossover, and in a side by side comparison with a couple of special 20's, and Golden Melodys, MS Blues harp and a few Lee Oskar 1910A (i will also do a comparison of the crossover harp to 8 Suzuki harps LATER on).The Crossover, The rest of the competition/comparisonNice tones, None of the harps i mentioned above in the same class as the Crossover harp.Very Flexible None of the harps i mentioned above in the same class as the Crossover harp.Very Responsive Both the Special 20& Lee Oskar 1910 are responsive, BUT!! Not like the Crossover.Fast Response to play fastThe Crossover harp sounds Excellent being played very quietly with very little air.I cannot say that about my Hohner Blues Harps, as they demand that you play them with more authority, I have sealed my Hohner Blues Harp's, But they still are not even close to the Crossover for quality of sound and what can be done with the harp right out of the box they are Amazing. The Crossover just does Everything Better, the expression, the full rounded sound, Bending, over blow, the quality of sound from Low to loud, that the Crossover is capable of is very nice! The real question is Does everyone need this high level of a Professional quality instrument. No!That's why many other models of Harps are selling well. The Closest thing to the Crossover is, well in the category of harps I listed above, Nothing, it is far and away superior, if that is what is needed. What about duration, longevity, durability! I dont know i have not had it very long. That said My Blues harps lasted, more than 10+ Years, but dont have anywhere near the sound quality or are as easy to play. This is how i would rate each, remember Opinions are like your third eye, every one has one, good or bad, your opinion may differ.the Crossover, is Excellent in all categories, except size, still trying to get used to it,The Crossover harp is SMALLER!! I mean narrower, and thinner, Comb tine spacing is Narrower, as the comb hole size is smaller about the size of the Blues harp.Crossover harp reeds are placed right up to the leading and trailing edge of the reed plates, None of the other are like that. The Comb they say it is Glue Laminated Bamboo, it is slick, slicker than pear wood or the plastics(PVC) on the others. The Stainless Steel covers are nice, they are opened up a lot on the Back, the Sides are also open like a marine band deluxe covers are, This lets more volume come through the sides, not muffling it, (shoot i can Muffle the sound, if i want with my hand) this provides a cleaner sound, and more volume, when you want it, but can sound raspy also when needed, as the bending and over/under blows come easy.Crossover (Excellent scale 8) Even though I gave the Crossover a 8, that is in the Excellent scale category, None of the other harps are in the Excellent Scale catagory.Special 20 is a very good Harp, Just Not as Good as the Crossover for me that is. (Very Good scale 7)Golden Melody, I have always loved Playing the Golden Melody, it is a great, very Ergonomic, Great Tone, fast playing, (Very Good Scale 6)Lee Oskars are also in the very good category, but!! (Very Good Scale 5)My range is 0-10 in each category, meaning Good 0-10 Very Good 0-10, Excellent 0-10my MS Blues Harp was at the bottom of the list for me, To me the Blues Harp, plays like a Much Older Model, the quality of sound is number one, then Playability and the Blues harp is just not there (Good Scale 5).These are all, out of the box stock harps, ExceptNote: all my Blues Harps are more than 10+ years Old, but are no where close to the Crossover.I will soon be testing a Hohner "ROCKET"AgainCategories:Excellent - CrossoverVery Good - Special 20, Golden Melody, Lee Oskar 1910AGood - Blues Harp5
