Customer Reviews

Another great CD.Beautiful singing and I enjoyed telling others about her.5From a Katherine Jenkins FanFor those who have a serious addiction to Katherine Jenkins music, this album does not fail to deliver the needed fix. I am greatly pleased with this newest album - I love the selection of material she chose. Highly recommended for Katherine Jenkin s fans, as well as those not familiar with Katherine Jenkins.5Lovely music, to be sure, but the CD is yet another in a long line of crossover efforts that doesn't track the progress of her.Sonically, there is a lot to admire about Katherine's tenth studio recorded release. The inclusion of the piano-under pinned "Silent Night" is a highlight for sure; realistically, this might be one of the loveliest recordings of this much favored chestnut. Katherine's fairly straightforward reading of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" (aided by German crossover violinist David Garrett) is also well done in fact. "Barcelona" feels a bit out of place here, especially if you are quite familiar with the Mercury/Caballe reading, but Alfie Boe and Katherine do their best to put it over. "Dreaming of the Days" is, of course, the CD's real standout track, based as it is on Einaudi's solid piano exercise "I Giorni," a relaxing piece that Katherine decided to have lyrics put to. Her voice really soars on this one. "We'll Gather Lilacs" and "How Great Thou Art" return us to the Welsh lady singer that we all know is still there inside of her. These are most likely generic renderings of these songs (to my ears at least), but even so they still sound very beautiful. Most upsetting is the fact that Katherine's song "Home" (you can still find the video on YouTube) has not been included on this CD. Though the melody and chord changes are in fact quite simple, this is one of the loveliest original songs in Katherine's oeuvre and unfortunately it has not appeared on a CD that I am aware of. "We are the Champions" closes things out for us here. Katherine has sung this one many times on televised public appearances, and again this recording is a rather straightforward copy of her manner of reenacting this Queen classic. While no one can quite get near the voice of Freddie Mercury in my opinion (it's not just a matter of range, it's a matter of tone, expression, emotion, and piss and vinegar, etc. that Freddie uniquely possessed), Katherine is able to reinterpret this one a bit in the manner of a hymnal--it doesn't quite work, but again I have no complaints about her vocals. The UK edition of this CD apparently includes the song "8 Nights of Joy" (an original Jewish themed song that approximates a hymnal on its own terms, allegedly written for Katherine's newborn child Aaliyah) but this is not to be found on the US edition that I purchased. Also, "Land of My Fathers" opens the CD that I picked up, whereas the UK release opens with "Ode to Joy" instead (go figure). The track listing, in fact, appears to be significantly altered on the UK issue. I frankly don't get this. Fans of Katherine will buy this CD instantly, while the rest will just scratch their heads and go back to their top 40 radio choices.I have to say that I am very happy for Katherine's success abroad and in the UK. She is definitely an angelic figure to emerge on the music scene, and I remain thankful that she has not steered her classically attuned audience wrong and has carried on making more beautiful music for listeners to enjoy. However, this newest CD just makes me wonder about the whole album situation that Katherine is in, a plight which I have been contemplating as of late. It seems that after the failure of the David Foster-produced "Believe" album to firmly plant Katherine within an ever growing U.S. based fan group, she (well, more likely her management team) seems to have given up on developing herself as an album artist. Those who picked up "Believe" years and years ago should be forgiven for thinking that Katherine was going to become an album artist. Releasing a new CD does not guarantee that an artist has released a new record album. These days (as evidenced by the very recent Latitude festival) Katherine seems to be releasing CDs that support her appearances, not doing appearances that support her CD albums. This kind of paradox changes the very nature of an artist's career. It's sad but true. Not that there is anything ignoble about singing on luxury cruises or doing open air concerts in the valleys, but one has to admit that this is a far cry from the proper (and air-conditioned) opera stage that the lady once saw herself occupying in younger days. It's a matter of mere opinion that her management team led her astray into the crossover world and "saved" her from the operas. I'm sure that, financially at least, Katherine is quite happy with things so far. She certainly hasn't attracted the wrong kinds of audiences, something I was initially afraid of when I heard her cover of Evanesence's grungy "Bring Me to Life" (a song that was, sadly, misinterpreted as a Christian radio offering back in its early run on the charts). No worries about such missteps on the new HOME SWEET HOME disc.If you've ever wondered why this beautiful and gifted songbird never quite took flight in the U.S., I'd say the situation is quite simple to comprehend. America is more concerned with quantity than with quality (a condition that has existed for us ever since the war years) and most are put off by what they call "opera singers." My dad, for instance, heard that she sang opera arias and it was as if he had heard that someone in the house had leprosy. He was that put off. I imagine it's the same way for most of our Blake Shelton and Britney Spears fans over here. There's something else to distract the record buyer out there. They aren't going to stop to smell the music of this precious rose named Katherine Jenkins. Even Katherine's U.S. success on "Dancing with the Stars" seemed to do little in terms of boosting the sales of her back catalogue of albums and, before long, she had to get refocused upon the UK which is where her career has remained ever since. I hate to see such beauty taken from us, especially after such a tantalizing opening on the American version of "Strictly Come Dancing" that she did over here. Still, turning her into a "crossover" hit just didn't seem to work for the American public. Now, this music (and Katherine's sweet personality) happens to be my cup of tea--heck, I wish I had a whole pitcher of this kind of thing. And I know that there are other Americans out there who also adore Katherine, given what little exposure that they have probably had to her work and to her life/career thus far. It's just that we don't make up a small army of fans here like she has managed to secure in her home country. I too am a bit melancholy that such a sweet lady didn't get to take America by storm in the way that some thought she might. But, beauty always finds its home in the end, I say. If America overlooks her, they just overlook her. I'm just very happy that she's been able to continue making her music her way. That's what counts in the end. B+ (for the CD's content and packaging, including the lovely dedications given at the end of the booklet inside)P.S. After having read Sean Smith's wonderful biography of Gary Barlow, I am confused as to why Katherine has not had a comprehensive biography written about her life and career thus far. Maybe it's still too early yet. In any case, I will definitely pick up a copy whenever I see that a proper biography of her is coming out!4the song choices are not that great; some are good and some are notThe following was a gift to my husband. He told me: The instrumental accompaniment is not clear - not crisp. It sounds filtered/fuzzy. Further, the song choices are not that great; some are good and some are not. [The problem with musical choices seems to be a trend for Katherine Jenkins' LP's.] However, my husband loves her voice and give that a 5-star. Maybe he'll get a future LP that WILL be a 5 star.3A great collection; my favorite since "One Fine DayA great collection; my favorite since "One Fine Day." I will need to listen a few times more to give detail but you know the old 20 word minimum.....5I enjoy listening to all Katherine Jenkins cds and this is ...I enjoy listening to all Katherine Jenkins cds and this is one of them. I haven't gotten one cd so far that I don't like. Susan Keefe5Still beautiful with great voice.Well, what can I say that hasn't been said before about her wonderful singing? To begin with, her voice has matured over time and so has gotten even better in interpretation and style.Let me just say that I began with her 2009 collection 'The ultimate Collection',and was immediately taken by her wonderful singing voice along with her physical beautiful.Several of her songs brought me to tears of joy and yes, sorrow. Especially, 'Hallelujah' and ' I will always love you', both of which brought me to tears. Now, fast forward to the present album from 2015, 'Home Sweet Home', which brought a maturity in style and voice. Not that her voice wasn't beautiful earlier, it was. To be honest the first 3 pieces on the disc I didn't care that much for. They reminded to much of the hyped up accoustic style of later Sara Brightman.(Who I also like sometimes, especially, 'Eden'). Her voice just does not need the souped up sound of ' Beethoven's Ode To Joy'. But, by 'Dreaming of the Days' I was hooked. And then her versions of ' Home Sweet Home' and ' How Great Thou Art', both sung in such a pure and natural style, that I loved so much. And yes, sorry to say I was brought to tears again. Especially since 'How Great Thou Art' was my late wife's favorite hymn and Ms. Jenkins sang it so, so beautifully. And finally, I'd like to mention the inclusion, even though I am not Jewish, of their hymn, ' 8 Nights of Joy', and the great Christmas carol, 'Silent Night', both sung to purity and perfection. Just beautiful! THIS IS A WONDERFUL DISC SONG BY A BEAUTIFUL SINGER WITH A GREAT VOICE, NOT TO BE MISSED.5Nice departure into a relaxing mix of spiritual music for the soulGift for a friend who loves Katherine Jenkins. This is a wonderful CD, her voice has matured so much and it is a very relaxing mixture of music. She is thrilled with the new songs, and I love the new look.5Magnificent, her best album to dateThis is quite possibly Katherine Jenkins' best album to date. Some of her more recent albums have had a fair amount of previously recorded material - this one is new. And some of the tracks are fantastic - "Ode to Joy" is great, "We Are the Champions" a blend of breathtaking volume and unbelievable clarity. There isn't a bad track on the album. Highly recommended.5Five StarsTerribly talented Ms. Jenkins - beautiful voice and beautiful woman.5
