Customer Reviews

Cheap Knock OffThe pic's show the manufacturer as Crescent. They are not the brand in the pics and instead are a cheap knock off. Not sure why everyone is rating 4's and 5's, but the one's I got are not the quality I was expecting. 5 dollar vise grips with a 2 dollar spot weld for the bargain price of 40 bucks. Crap1Does not work on high quality fittingsDid not work on any of my snap fittings. Tool seems to be designed for one specific type of fitting. It crushed and destroyed my high end snaps purchased elsewhere. Should come with adaptor for different fittings. It's pretty useless otherwise.2otherwise seems to be a simplistic and good product for replacing snaps that corrode or break offWorks well once I removed a bur on the inside press part. It was crushing the compression ring and I did not catch it until I had already replaced several snaps. Once I filed off the burr, worked well. Gave it 3 stars simply from the QC standpoint before sending out the product, otherwise seems to be a simplistic and good product for replacing snaps that corrode or break off.3Great for Marine Snaps & Much MoreThis tool is basically a pair of vice grips with the snap die's welded to the vice teeth - and that's not a bad thing. This tool did a nice job installing snaps on a marine Sunbrella canvas boat cover. Note, this tool only compresses the bottom snap into the top part of the snap. It does not cut pilot holes or do anything else. Therefore, you 'must' pierce the material within which you are inserting the snap first. This is especially important if you are installing snaps along an edge or seam that has reinforcement material. Don't think you will be able to make your pilot hole with a nail or pin. You really need to make the pilot hole the same size as the male portion of the snap to get a good fit. I recommend the following hole punch which is adjustable to various sizes to accommodate your snap size.Revolving Punch Plier Kit, Punch Hole Tool including Punch Plier, Brass Pad, Screwdriver and Grinding Rod for Belt, Saddle, Watch Strap, Shoe, Fabric, Paper, etcHere are the steps I recommend to install snaps in canvas fabric:----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------0. Test compressing a snap before you work on your fabric. You don't need to test on frabric, just get a feel for the setter tool by creating a snap from the two snap halves. This will have the benefit of getting you familiar with the tool but also allow you to adjust the compression of the tool via the thumb screw adjustment. You should be able to compress the snap halves without having to be a body builder1. Use hole punch of the proper size to accommodate your snap size (seriously, don't skimp on this step)2. Insert base of snap (male size) through hole in fabric3. Place top of snap over base of snap (the fabric should now be sandwiched between the two snap halves4. Place the setter tool over the snap halves in the proper orientation (Note: Make sure the setter tool is loosened by backing out the adjustment thumb screw until you can reasonably compress the snap without having to apply too much pressure). If you can't squeeze close the setter tool then the thumb screw is in too far ... back it out.5. Tighten the thumb screw and compress the snap a second time. This will give you the tight fit you need for the snap. When installed properly, the snap should not spin if you try to rotate it. After a few tries you should be able to loosen and tighten the setter tool properly without much effort.Once you get a feel for the tool and this process, you should be able to whip through all your snaps in no time.4You need this toolWorks perfectly, it took me about two minutes to master. Used it to put snaps on my entire new mooring cover (75 snaps) and it worked great! Still like brand new not a glitch to speak of. Bring your hand muscles if your going to do that many. I've worked on cars all my life and I'm used to using hand tools and this one measures up to all expectations.5A Tweener Price-Wise That Works and LastsI am a boat owner. I had done snaps before with a cheap plier-type tool from Overtons. I promptly bent the handle on that with my bare hands after only a few snaps on a canvas top for my boat. This time, I was installing several stainless steel long post snaps on a new snap-in carpet (much thicker material and longer, harder posts). I tried to make due with the $8.00 hammer and punch from the local hardware store and it was awful, damaging more snaps than I installed and hit my thumb a couple of times. I looked at the "official" snap tool for $140 and then found this tool for just over $40...a nice "tweener" between the professional model and the punch. I was able to finish the job quickly with this tool and it's ready for more. It does take more hand strength than the more expensive specially designed tool, but if you aren't doing snaps for a living, it works. As others have mentioned, just crimp once, turn the knob once to tighten, crimp again, turn the knob and crimp once more to finish it off. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that if you have a snap farther than about 1 1/4" from the edge, it can't reach it. I had to finish two of those with the old hammer and punch. For the typical boat owner, this is a sufficient, lasting tool at a moderate price.4Makes the job a "snap".The snap setter arrived on time and in perfect condition. Setting the snaps on my canvas golf enclosure was easy. I lined up the canvas to the fiberglass body, drilled a small hole thru both. Then inserted the cap thru the canvas, and placed the socket on the die. lined up the cap with the die, and an easy squeeze crimped perfectly. Used the pilot hole on the fiberglass to set the screw for the snap stud. The one con, is that when the pliers are open, the cap can fall off if you have to maneuver very much. Not the tools fault, just takes a bit of patience.4Much better for stainless steel snaps!I would have given 5 stars but the pictures show a quality Crescent brand vice grip but what was shipped was a no-name China vice grip. Other than that, this is the inexpensive tool you need for setting up the female side of stainless steel snaps. I broke the first aluminum one trying to swage on the snaps. This tool has several advantages to the cheaper ones. 1) It is strong. It is not going to break at the handle like the pressed metal or aluminum tools. 2) The cup that holds the button/outer part of the snap allows the button to freely float. Unlike the previous tool that tightly cradles the button. This is important since you are coming in at an angle with any of these types of tools and if the button can float a bit, the swage can be off center and interfere with the snap mating on to the male side. 3) The pin that swage the button is round and performs an even rollover/swage of button pin. The cheaper tool I had was faceted on the pin and continually split the stainless steel instead of rolling it over uniformly. 4) Once you find the right compression setting (adjustment of the vice grip) for your button and thickness of material, it will uniformly perform the same swage on all following buttons for that thickness and snap. Tip: you will move the adjustment when clamping and releasing the vice grips and small movements will affect the compression level. Mark a line on the threads and then in line on the body of the tool so you can tell when you ve moved it and return it back to the setting for your job.4Best tool for installing snap buttosI tried using the normal die sets to install snap buttons but that wasn't strong enough to fully set the snap. This tool (even though expensive) did the job. It does require gradual tightening in increments to get the snap really tightly fastened to the material. No problem!5Almost flawlessThese would be an amazing tool if it could do the male side of snaps, however it works perfectly on female side, I had to use my cable cutters to rivit the male snaps. If they could make something that would slip over the rivet side so it could do Mail snaps that would make this tool flawless. Just a warning to anyone that wants to do the male side of snaps don't use this tool it will flatten the button .4
