Customer Reviews

Fantastic score, brilliant lyrics, wonderfully acted in a very realistic locationI was in the 11th grade when JCS was made. This was the first musical I ever saw and I have never forgotten how emotional I felt about it and how beautiful the music was. It still remains a top ten favorite. The lyrics are brilliant, at times joyous and other times tragic and sad just as the story of Jesus is. You don't have to be in your sixties (gasp!) to enjoy this movie :*))5Classic soundtrack of ditto movie, but soundtrack came firstGreat soundtrack of ditto movie; was greatly influencing a generation (or two?) back in the days, including myself. The movie is for the most part based on the soundtrack; yes, the music came before the movie, and the movie was only slightly adjusted, and included one not original song (that was made for the movie). I recommend watching the movie first, as seeing and hearing creates a feeling in you that imho makes you get the most out of it; the two go together, so to say.5A bit of track listing editing may be needed.A great soundtrack! But if you buy the digital version, you may have to edit the track listing numbers of Disc 2. For example, change "Disc 2 Track One" to "Disc One Track 15," and "Disc 2 Track 2" to "Disc 1 Track 16," and so forth. Otherwise, when you download it to your MP3 Player, the order will be "Disc One Track One, followed by "Disc Two, Track One," followed by "Disc 1 Track 2" followed by "Disc 2 Track 2," and so forth. Unless your MP3 Player knows how to separate "Disc 1" from "Disc 2," changing the track listing numbers may be necessary.4Sad that the audio quality isn't better.I am a huge fan of this musical and this version performed by Carl Anderson and Ted Neeley. I own the DVD and love it which I would rate 5 stars. The reason I rated this CD so low is that the audio quality is so poor. It really does sound awful. I heard some reviewers claim that it sounds like they are singing down a barrell and I can say they are not wrong. I would love if they would re-release this CD but actually take the track from the DVD if possible because this is one of my favorite musicals.3OMG this is a fun listen...This was my oldest sister's album when I was 9 yrs. old. That was over 43 years ago, and this album is still just as enthralling. I'll watch the movie soon for the first time! A must-own 70's gem. Enjoy!5Love the songs, wish the audio quality was betterI love the movie soundtrack, and have always preferred it over the original studio production. However, the audio quality on this CD is very poor. I'm constantly turning the volume up or down, as the songs seem to be either too quiet or too loud. It's often difficult to hear the vocals over the music. I had the cassette of the soundtrack years ago and the audio quality was so much better. Not sure why it's so poor on the CD.3Still an exceptional soundtrackWhen I heard they released a remastered recording of the movie soundtrack to celebrate the 25th anniversary in 1998 I knew I had to get it and I'm glad I did. From the Overture to John Nineteen: Forty-One it felt like I was listening to this with new ears and that's what you'll discover as well when you listen to this recording. It should be noted I'm also getting the original concept album so I hope the experience I had listening to this will also apply to the original and judging from the fact that both albums are on Spotify I already know this to be the case.5So it was great when I could order on CD and can play ...saw this movie when it first came out, OMYG we used to play this album, back then Plastic vinyl, over and over again. So it was great when I could order on CD and can play again to my heart's content. Awesome soundtrack !!!5Excellent version, some audio issuesI hadn't heard or even thought of "Jesus Christ Superstar" for a long time, but came across the film on cable and watched it out of curiosity. By the end of the first song, I was hooked (again). I'd forgotten how good it was. I'll review the movie separately under the item listing for the DVD, but I will report that I ended up watching it repeatedly (HD cable on demand allowed me to watch it at my convenience). It actually seemed to get better with each successive viewing, and so did the soundtrack. Both the music and the film have held up extremely well considering how old they are. In fact, I think that JCS is Andrew Lloyd Webber's very best work and while I have enjoyed "Phantom of the Opera", it's not as good.Since the only recording I had was on LP and packed away in a box somewhere, I needed to get it on CD or as a download. I started checking around on Amazon to see what was available and what other people recommended, and soon discovered that fans of this music have *very* strong opinions. There simply is no overwhelming consensus, but both the original studio recording (it was released as a studio recording before any stage performance had been given, let alone recorded) and this film soundtrack have fairly widespread support. Having watched the film so many times, I wanted the soundtrack, in spite of some negative reviews about the sound quality (mostly fair) and some reviewers who don't care for the performance. I purchased it as a download, since it was about half the price of the CDs and I could get it immediately.First, I'll discuss the performance. If you don't like the film, or if you don't like the singers in the film, then you won't like the soundtrack. But it's hard to imagine why listeners would not like the singers. Carl Anderson as Judas is outstanding and so is Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene. I found that Ted Neeley's performance as Jesus, which at first seemed a bit weak and underpowered, was actually nuanced, thoughtful, and built up through the movie, as is appropriate for his role. When he finally gets angry, you really pay attention. Having said that, some people really dislike Neely in the role and you may be one of them, so if you haven't seen the film, listen to his tracks before you make a decision. I also liked Barry Dennen as Pilate, and Josh Mostel as Herod. Now for the audio quality. Many reviewers complained about the remastering, and I agree that there are some problems, but none of them is a deal-breaker. A frequent complaint about the CD is the gap between each track, which also exists on the download version. However, you can get rid of it in iTunes by setting the "stop time" of each track to match the instant that the music stops, and then selecting "gapless play" for all of the tracks. It takes a little time, but it does a pretty good job of getting rid of the gaps, which are very annoying. This music was supposed to be heard in one continuous flow, not as segments or songs with silence in between.Another complaint that people have is that the sound was remastered and remixed poorly, and I agree that it's not nearly as well done as the remastered soundtrack that you'll hear while watching the film. I have no idea why they didn't just use the same mix for the CD, but they didn't, and it was a big mistake. There are noticeable changes in volume level between tracks, which makes it necessary to raise or lower the volume control. This doesn't occur during the film. The vocals tend to be a bit too "forward" at the expense of a fuller instrumental background, another problem that doesn't affect the film. There is also some very annoying high-pitched distortion at the very beginning of "Everything's Alright", which, while it only last a few measures, is also absent in the film version. Finally, this is not a totally complete soundtrack of all the music from the film. There is an all-instrumental interlude that takes place before the track "Judas' Death" that doesn't appear here, and it's very good music (reminiscent of a passage from Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky"). It could easily have been included and it should have been.Still, even with these reservations about the sound quality, I strongly recommend this version. I'm also ordering the CDs of the original version, since that was the one I first heard years ago and it is indispensible. I decided against any of the later versions, though they also have their adherents. I think it says something about the power of this music that there are so many performances available, and that each of them has its supporters.5"Slightly Used" Vinyl Soundtrack Sounds GreatMy 34-yr-old son loves the soundtrack to the movie JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, which he heard me play on various media while he was growing up. He now is really into vinyl, so I wanted to give him an original LP recording of "JCS" for his birthday. The LP arrived promptly & was safely & securely packaged. My presentation of the LP gift to my son was delayed by several weeks, but once I sent it to him & played it, he assured me that it sounds great! Thank you so much!5
