Customer Reviews

Friday, i'm in love with this box setA must have for Cure fans. Each disk in this four disk set is a slice of different eras of the Cure's ever changing sound. If you're a fan, quit reading and buy it already!5Essential for the Cure lover - guaranteed songs you've never heard!SO many songs I'd never heard before. Great value for such an epic collection of music.5The Crucial CURE!Here's a material list of the components within this Boxed Set:- 4 Discs; Disc 1: 1978-1987, Disc 2: 1987- 1992, Disc 3: 1992- 1996, Disc 4: 1996- 2001.- 70 tracks in Total- 69 page book that includes dozens of photos, a quasi-biography, excerpts from interviews with Robert and Simon, and an essay by Johnny Black.- All comes packaged in a sturdy, hardcover book-like jacket.Join The Dots is, perhaps, the most far-reaching collection of career- spanning material ever released by a commercial artist. It is certainly the most ambitious endeavor The Cure has released over their expansive 30+ year career. For the first time, every B-Side (all 48 of them!), every contribution made to a film soundtrack, and all other unreleased tracks are made available on the CD format in this four-disc package. In total, there are 70 tracks to feast your ears on for months to come. More important and ultimately more satisfying than any regular album from The Cure, this massive compilation is Crucial for fans of this legendary band. For someone my age, this box set is a godsend. I was born in 1987, which means that the majority of this material was released before I was born or when I was only a little kid. At the time of purchasing this item, I owned six of their albums and two DVDs; a pretty large and effective representation The Cure's accomplishments, I thought. The four discs that make up Join The Dots, however, are just as representative of everything The Cure stands for as all of those albums and DVDs. The Cure has always taken the creative high road by never pandering to the Mainstream audiences, but simply writing and releasing the material that pleased them. The music in this collection reveals even more of that creativity and originality that has been vital to the band's long term success. Even if you're already a devout admirer, as I am, I think you will develop a higher level of respect and love for The Cure after you experience the music on these discs. They really are that good!If you're a dedicated fan, then you know most of their best songs were never released as singles. I'm sure this is why I found that the majority of the B-sides are a bit more musically and lyrically mature and compelling than the better known A-sides. This trait is especially true for the First and Fourth discs. The Cure's A-sides didn't start matching the quality of the B-sides until they released "The Head on the Door". For me, the Second and Third discs are the best. All the characteristics you love about this band will be strongly reinforced on these two discs. To conclude, I must reiterate how essential the music on these discs truly is. No matter how well you think you know The Cure's world, you must have this. You will be truly surprised that just one band was capable of creating so much material. Until I bought this boxed set, I never knew how much music I was missing from them. I hadn't a clue that they had so much music out there, waiting to be discovered. I'm sure this is probably the case with many of you, as well.5For Hardcore FansDisappointed-but my bad. I wasn't realizing this is (as it states) "B Sides and Rarities", so, it doesn't have my old favorites on it. That said, if you are a new or old fan of The Cure, this will be a treasure. It has four cd's, with music ranging from 1978-2001. The book is a part of the set, with more info than you could wish for on the inner workings of the main artist's (Smith's) mind when he wrote the songs.4Great set shows diverse creativity, gradual declineThat's right, I contend that the slow homoginization of the Cure sound which became somewhat of a formula is on display over the course of these 4 disks. Obviously a must for Cure fans, JOIN THE DOTS still boasts many fantastic, unusual songs that will surely win over new listeners as well.I got turned on to the Cure way back when THE HEAD ON THE DOOR came out and I gotta say their 80's material on Disk 1 still sounds fresh to me while the songs on disks 3 and 4 reveal the Cure becoming a bit more transparent and less surprising. I think their last truly great album was WISH, although that's when this intangible sort of change (or "sameness") began to creep in.Some will call me crazy as there is still a fair amount of diversity on the last 3 Cure albums as well as disks 3 and 4 of JOIN THE DOTS. So maybe I'm just saying the Cure have gotten a bit more predictable in later years. I'm tempted to rate this collection 5 stars on the strength of Disk 1 which contains some of the most unusual and entertaining Cure songs ever, but I'm trying to remain objective here.I could go on and on about these songs and the memories they invoke, especially the ones on disks 1 and 2, so I'll refrain from doing so. I'm sure many Cure fans would list a number of songs they think should have been added to this set. I'll just say that I would've omitted "How Beautiful You Are" from disk 2 since it's practically identical to the album version. In its place I would've added the "Primary (Red Mix)" alongside the "Just Like Heaven (Dizzy Mix)." I think "Primary" is one of the Cure's weaker singles, but this remix is tripped-out and totally hot.I don't want to indicate disks 3 and 4 are lame by any means - I can't say I love all of these songs, but there is still much to like here. The "Purple Haze" covers are way cool and, contrary to the opinion of some goofy reviewer here, the "A Forest" remix with Earl Slick is powerful and super tripped out - it totally KILLS (ignore trendy critics who get hung up on the "dated" drum&bass sound). And I love the beautiful orchestral version of "This is a Lie" - the lyrics are so poignant and express something so true about how people believe in false religions and other misguided ways of life just because they were brought up that way.The best songs in this collection (more than half) demonstrate the Cure's ability to paint a vivid musical picture that perfectly compliments any given feeling or subject matter in a song. That is characteristic of the music I love the most.4Awesome collection of B sides for the Cure a most for any fanAwesome collection of B sides for the Band the Cure if your a fan then this is a most for any Cure collection. Super seller fast shipping buy with confidence. 5Great CureIncludes numerous b-sides and unreleased tracks, including later period work which holds up to their 70-90's output. Get the original box which comes with the full size booklet and individual jewel cases.5Exhaustive.An exhaustive overview of pretty much all b-sides and rarities by the Cure during their tenure on Fiction Records (1978-2001), "Join the Dots" is a critical collection for fans. Around five hours of rare Cure music is contained within the four CDs of the set, and while some of the material left out can be annoying (more on that in a minute), this is a superb resource for any of us who try and gather the entire output of a band. The set runs chronologically, providing a fine overview of the band's career as much as anything else. The Cure always seemed to fill their b-sides with interesting material, from the early days (jaunty, clean tone punky "Plastic Passion") to much later (the absolutely superb "Sugar Girl"). Like many bands, in teh '90s the Cure became involved with tribute albums ("Purple Haze") and soundtracks ("Burn", "Dredd Song"). Some great performances ended up on these, "Burn" in particular from the Crow is highly regarded, and while there are bound to be some things you won't care for (for me it's the occasional 12" remix and some of the b-sides that just sound incomplete and unmemorable like "Halo"), it'll be someone else's goldmine. The only really noticably missing stuff on here are the a-sides-- "Killing An Arab", "Charlotte Sometimes", et.al. While these have all been released in one fashion or another, it'd be nice to see all of them collected in a convenient (and remastered!) package as some of them never ended up on albums.Per usual good boxed set standards, the entire set has been rematered-- it sounds great, crisp and clear with an opportunity to really appreciate the subtleties of the pieces, and includes extensive liner notes about each disc and a detailed discography.I can't imagine anyone but a real diehard of the band would want this, but for those of us who fall in that category, "Join the Dots" is a great set. Recommended.5Some of The Cure's best songsIf you don't have a collection of The Cure's 45 RPM singles and EP releases, then this is really the only way to get a lot of these songs, many of which I consider The Cure's best work.I know most people consider Disintegration to be their best, but not me. I think Robert (or the record company) pushed a lot of his best work to the B-sides of some of the singles from the early and mid-1980s, and these are some hard-to-find songs, now. Songs like Lament, Speak My Language, The Exploding Boy, Throw Your Foot, and Happy The Man are what I consider some of the best work the band has done, and while you do get to hear them perform these in concerts quite a bit (while throngs of preppies who only own Disintegration wrinkle their noses and scream "play Fascination Street!") you wouldn't find most of these songs on the readily-available studio albums on CD... Until Join The Dots came out.Of course, there's also some silly stuff like their short-but-sweet "Hello I Love You" cover (and their more serious, full-length one), and lots of tracks from movie soundtracks and compilations (Burn, Dredd Song, Young Americans, etc.) but for me the highlight of this set is CD1.The price varies wildly in the resale market, but if you can snatch a copy of the full, original release with an intact booklet and case, you'll be happy you paid a little extra for it if you're a Cure fan.Bottom line: You want this collection.5GREAT SHAPE, IN PERFECT CONDITION. CURE FANS MUST HAVE FOR THE COLLECTION!Great music for my collection. Nice book with CD's enclosed. Worth the price for sure if you are a fan of The Cure. All Cure Fans should grab this while they can!5
