Best size for cutting lots of jelly roll stripsWorks like magic for cutting strips, as long as I'm careful in getting both folds aligned. Align folded edge of fabric with line close to me on cutting mat. Then carefully lift selvages and bring toward me to create second fold, aligning with cutting mat line. With Shape Cut upside down, align "top" line of Shape Cut with fabric fold nearest to me. Starting at the right side at 0, I spread my hand flat to keep the Shape Cut in place, cutting and moving my hand across with my index finger "near" the next slot to cut. If you start at the left and cut toward the right, the fabric fold has a tendency to creep out of alignment, which is no different than regular rotary cut rulers. The Shape Cut just lets you cut more at a time without moving the ruler, and they're all the same size!5I love the fact that I can everything super fast.I heard a lot of old quilters say they don't like this, sure glad I'm new at quilting, I love it. Injuries to my back make it very painful to stand and cut the material for a quilt. because I'm new it seems to take me forever to make sure I have everything perfect. With this it's trim the end and the next thing I know it's done. I know it would have taken me so much longer because of my back. You can watch videos on how to use this on you tube, very helpful, I watched them before I decided to buy this. I am super happy did.5Had High Hopes for it but Disappointed so farI've sewed for most of my life but started quilting 3 years ago. Over the past year, I started having problems getting straight cuts on some of my strips. They weren't off much, but enough to make the finished quilt top a bit wonky and hard to square up. I saw that this ruler was highly reviewed and recommended, so I bought it with high expectations. So far, I haven't had the positive results everyone else raves about. I still get cuts that are slightly bowed or curved. Actually more of the cuts are off now than when I used the regular ruler & rotary cutter. I pre-wash my fabric, press it and do the hanging and straightening the grain lines thing then fold it so the grain lines are as true as I can get them. And then fold it again so it fits under the ruler. And the cuts are still off. I've watched Youtube videos and followed the directions and still get wonky strips. It's possible that it's user error, but I haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Would prefer that they make this ruler wider so you don't have to fold the fabric twice. Maybe that would help. I gave this 3 stars because it's a great concept, the ruler is sturdy and heavy enough to hold the fabric down so it doesn't shift, and because it's easy to make that first cut and then just zip, zip, zip, cut a bunch of strips. Bummer that the strips are not straight.3Great product.I bought my first one and used it for over a decade before it broke, and this replacement is going to get used just as heavily. Great product.5Love it! Perfect cuts every time.I saw this being used in a video tutorial. I was skeptical at first and had a hard time justifying the cost, especially since I have a lot of rulers already. I no longer have doubts and completely love this ruler.5Worth every penny, and then some! This ruler is absolutely invaluable for cutting many strips/squares all at once without having to lift it every time, thus eliminating the possibility of accidentally moving your fabric and having it mis-aligned. I have cut an entire yard worth of perfect 2 1/2" strips in minutes, and it was so fast and easy that I no longer dread the cutting part of quilt-making since there is no re-positioning and re-measuring and re-checking, etc. every time you make a cut. I have made 5" squares as well using this wonderful tool and they were all uniform and perfect! Once you use this ruler, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it!5Love this ruler, BUT follow directions carefullySave your directions and pay attention to them to get correct size strips. You must make first cuts on the zero line, then move the ruler to the 1/4 inch line to make second cuts to end up with correctly sized strips. It makes cutting strips so easy and accurate.Love how this ruler lays on both sides of fabric when you cut. This keeps the ruler from sliding as you cut.4Didn't work for double layers fleece--until I found the right rotary cutterIt's a great concept, but when I attempted two layers of fleece for one inch by five inch fringes (a no sew double layer fleece fringed blanket)--it didn't perform. None of my cuts were clean, and I took care to use sharp new blades. When I used my conventional quilting grid and edge: all cuts were clean. I think the slots prevented my blades from biting both layers. Unfortunate, as I have a 60 by 72 inch rectangle to fringe. That's going to be a lot of cuts with a conventional ruler. . .oh well, my bad.Two days later: updating my review. I thought, why not a larger diameter rotary cutter--is there one? ( I was using my usual 45 mm cutter. Don't laugh, experienced quilters. I didn't know). Well, there are 60 mm rotary cutters, and I now have one, and that has solved the problem of double fleece layers and slotted ruler. I still have to apply some muscle on the cut, and pull it both ways through the slot, but I am getting consistent cuts with very few moves of the ruler. And could slice pizza on the side. Five stars for the ruler. I recommend a 60 mm rotary cutter to use with it.5Bent
Fabric.com sent this in a box that was too small for the ruler. This means I have a ruler that is bent and shaped like a boat. For now only 2 Stars I might increase it if I can get the ruler to lie flat.
2Slotted RulerThis slotted ruler is great for cutting fleece edging to make blankets. Very sturdy plastic and clear with easy to read markings. Has a hold at the top so you can hang it up. I got this one because it has markings at 1/2 inch intervals which some other rulers did not have. It also is 12 x 18 while some of the other rulers are not the size they advertise.5It s a quilters have to haveIf you haven t used one of these you are missing out on a great product. It makes cutting all diffent size strip cutting so easy and is a real time saver5
