Customer Reviews

Precious memoriesBob Marley is truly one of the greatest. My husband and I shared "Kaya" while traveling down the coast in California in a bright red convertible..."Sun Is Shining" is my favorite. Years later, my son wrote an assignment for school and made reference to "Sun Is Shining" as being a song that "describes how I feel about man's place on this Earth as being a part of it rather than a destroyer of it. The world is beautiful and it's great to be free." I think my husband and Bob Marley would be proud. Shy5Great music, Bad remastering5 stars for the music which is timeless. I hate the re-mastering, which rarely gets done well. Waaay too much top end for my taste. Reggae from the 70's isn't supposed to sparkle. It's deep warn and heavy. Family Man's basslines sit in the mix merely as an afterthought.5The Revolutionary relaxing & taking it easyI've read articles, commentary and heard people accuse Robert Nesta Marley of going soft on KAYA as it's easily the most laid back and relaxed LP in his vast and magnificent catalog. By the time of it's recording, in 1977 during the sessions that produced the Masterpiece EXODUS, he and the new incarnation of The Wailers had hit their creative stride. Much controversy surrounded this album for several reasons not the least of which was it's title and people initially thought these were "leftover" songs form EXODUS. Nothing could be further from the truth, this is an album where we found Bob in a relaxed state, perhaps for the first time in his life and these songs reflect that.On EXODUS there were traces of his more reflective side as well, however, it was still dominated by the themes of Rastafarian knowledge and African revolution and unity which were at the heart of both Marley's music and genius. But KAYA was something different than what the music world was used to from The Wailers, an almost "at home hanging with the boys & girls" feel. It's about the love of Jah, women, wine and ganja. No overtly revolutionary themes in these recordings, Bob was showing us something few had ever seen or heard from him, having fun and finding peace with where his life was at that time. And I for one happen to absolutely love it!This is a great album and a fine part of his legendary catalog, it must be viewed for what it is a fun & reflective album, nothing more or less. He was showing his range and variety as a sonwriter, things that should and are praised for other well known and historic artists. He gave us such wonderful, revolutionary and incredible themes in EXODUS, that I think he wanted to show some variety and do an album from a different & more relaxed approach and KAYA fits that mode of thinking. People are always trying to lock artists into one or two themes never allowing for them to express another side of their thoughts or personalities. This is a laid back Bob Marley and their has to be room for relaxation for each and everyone of us.This album mostly suffers from having to follow the album voted by Time Magazine as being the greatest of the 20th century! It's a different album altogether and was released a year after he had blown the world away with EXODUS, that's why, in my opinion, KAYA has be given such a bad rap by many. However, I think it's one of the most refreshing albums he recorded and I would highly recommend it for anyone whose a fan of The Wailers which at this time included: Bob Marley - lead vocals, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, percussion; Aston "Family Man" Barrett - bass, percussion; Carlton Barrett - drums, percussion; Tyrone "Organ D" Downie - keyboards, percussion; Alvin "Seeco" Patterson - percussion; Junior Marvin - lead guitar; Rita Marley - backing vocals; Marcia Griffiths - backing vocals; Judy Mowatt - backing vocals; Vincent Gordon - saxophone; Glen Da Costa - trombone. This would be a nice starting point for anyone looking to get into Bob Marley's music for the first time. It was truly one of the gems of Marley's solo albums after the breakup of the original band that included the legendary Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. This is a complete albuma and in hindsight, many have come to realize both it's importance and brilliance.5Kaya Deluxe EditionHaving owned Kaya previously, I was interested in Live in Rotterdam, Netherlands 1978. Even though the mixing could have been better. Overall this live recording is still worth having in my collection. Bob Marley with Peter Tosh, in his last live recording with Bob, is a testament to the greatness of both artists. The performance felt very strip down from later shows, however, it was still a lively and exciting performance. Glad to own it.5Marley expanded delivers (as usual).Marley's "Kaya", perceived by many to be his "love song" album, is a crisp produced affair with classic tracks such as "Is This Love?", "She's Gone" and "Satisfy My Soul" as well as his typical poignant and poetic tracks--"Misty Morning", "Running Away" and the moving "Time Will Tell". It is a brilliant album--but does it warrant an expanded, deluxe edition? If you possess the remastered album released years ago, the live show attached to it is quite good, though not as strong as others recorded from this tour. A must for Marley completists (myself included), but not necessary if you already own it.4My favorite Marley studio albumMy favorite Marley studio album. Several others are a close second. This one is just awesomely themed. Sounds quality is great. Easy Skanking, Misty Morning, She's Gone, Sun is Shining, Is this Love, Satisfy my Soul are all destined to be on this album. Perfectly themed.5A smoother side of Bob MarleyAlthough this album is very smooth and produced, which was necessary to introduce him to a wider world market, it's still full of great music. Songs like "Is this love?" helped to make Bob Marley a household name. "Easy skanking" and "Satisfy my soul" are great dance tunes that will make your feet start tapping and before you know it you'll be in the groove. At the time, he was probably criticized by other reggae musicians for releasing such a polished album, but it worked to spread the popularity of reggae and helped to solidify Marley's international reputation. Many of these songs have a deep meaning. Don't be fooled into believing that this is just "island pop".5Memories, memories,.... memories. For a few moments there I was in the days of wine and roses; my fondly missed days in the sun. Wonderful album from a long-gone artist.5Worst Deluxe Release To Date...Universal Records should be ashamed of themselves for such a shameful cash grab with this release.Disc 1- The first disc is simply the 2001 remaster, no different at all. They left nearly 40 minutes on this disc completely empty of any bonus tracks when there are dozens of unreleased demo's, dubs, and songs from the Kaya sessions that could have easily been included, just as they have done with all of the previous Universal Deluxe Edition sets.Disc 2 - This disc is an incomplete live show from Rotterdam, Netherlands on July 7th, 1978. They excluded two songs that are from (you aren't going to believe this) the KAYA album leaving only 1 track in the live performance from the actual album. Crisis and Running Away were removed from the live set making the relevance of the live set almost nill. Truly unbelievable and mind blowing as to how they came to this decision. The two tracks excluded total about 15 minutes and could have been added to the first disc, while still leaving room for at least a half dozen unreleased tracks! I had to go find the bootleg version of the show to get these two songs, burn them to CD and include them with my set. Additionally, the sound quality on the live album is worse than the bootleg recordings found online! They did not use the soundboard for this release, even though they have it and the whole show sounds ripped from an online source, and like the treble was tweaked. Bob's vocals do not sound as good as the bootlegs available.Packaging - They have also really cheaped out on the packaging for this set. The legendary plastic slip cover, which displays the signature "Deluxe Edition" has been completely eliminated leaving the cardboard double disc case just flopping around openly. Unbelievably, they even trick us poor consumers into thinking this slip cover IS included by showing the slip cover on this very Amazon listing, displaying the "Deluxe Edition" text! This proves they intended to include it but did not in an effort to pad their pockets with a few more pennies.I am truly shocked at how brazen Universal Records is to release such a shoddy rip off. It's like they've become extremely dishonest and unscrupulous and do not care who knows it. Zero bonus tracks, bad quality live show, missing songs from the live show, tricking us on the cover. Just so overwhelmingly ridiculous. The fact that they have released 5 great Bob Marley Deluxe Editions in the past also cements the fact that they know how to release quality collections, but for the sole purpose of bilking the fans and lining their pockets, refused to.I have been a massive fan of the Universal Deluxe Editions and have dozens upon dozens of them in my CD collection, including all five Bob Marley releases, which have all been fantastic. However, the Kaya Deluxe Edition is just flat out unacceptable. Universal owes us fans at least a refund, or more appropriately, a replacement release that coincides with the quality and content of all the other Bob Marley Deluxe Editions they have produced, and which we have come to expect.I truly feel ripped off on this one.Chris Elliott1A MUST HAVE BOB MARLEY ALBUMWe are on a new reggae music deep dive at our studio and needed more reference material. It does not get more real or better than the soul Bob Marley put into his singing and music. We've been to concerts in Jamaica, wish we could have seen Bob in his day and time. Love the bass guitar on this album, simple and beautiful.Good music to all!5
