Customer Reviews

Great wool yarn but note it is rustic Used to make a man's fisherman's like wool sweater. Color is great - it is lightly variegated. Note the yarn is highly rustic with lots of variability in thickness, with occasional extra thick and thin parts. It also was lightly interspersed with dried plant material and plastic like threads. Every skein had at least one big knot and occasionally smaller ones. It was nice to see that the seven skeins I received were from the same lot. 5Oh so soft! Great quality! I used to knit as a kid, but I never liked the way the blankets felt. Always rough and "crunchy", is the word I'd use. Now as an adult I'm smarter and can read up on the internet about different things that are better for you, like the joys of all natural wool yarn. This stuff is incredibly soft. Doesn't agitate your skin at all! I just took the whole thing and rubbed it against my face when it arrived. So lovely!I did use 2 rolls to make yarn balls for my dryer. You're supposed to use all natural, virgin wool for that purpose. I rolled up some tennis-sized balls and washed them once to felt them. Now they tumble in my dryer to help naturally soften the clothing and cut back on dry time. (I read that dryer sheets are pretty awful for you...so figured it wouldn't hurt to convert over juuuuuuust in case...)Keep in mind, the natural wool will smell a little gross after the first wash. But once it dries, it has no scent. You can put a drop of scented oil in the middle if it bothers you.I bet this would make an amazing sweater. I'm going to practice my knitting again and make myself a soft, warm winter hat or scarf. Very soft and a lovely beige color! Very classy! 5Quality=Cost I used this yarn to knit my very first sweater, so this concern can maybe chalked up to lack of experience, but my main problem is that the yarn does not seem to hold a rib stitch at all, both on the sleeves and on the torso. On the plus side it's quite soft and doesn't irritate my neck at all! I do wear a T-shirt underneath though. It definitely has some quirks like knots in the yarn or weird plastic bits, but if you are willing to overlook that you are getting a lot of yarn at a reasonable price. Overall, I would say this yarn is exactly what I paid for. 4Excellent quality, Excellent price. I have purchased this in the past and have had none of the problems listed in the negative reviews. I have yet to find wool yarn of better, or matching quality, for even twice the price. I just wish it was available in super wash, because it makes phenomenal socks! I can not recommend it more highly, you can't go wrong with this yarn. Some reviews say it fees a bit rough. However, this is sheep wool, not alpaca, and the feel is consistent with that. It is of outstanding quality, from a reputable company and is so versatile and economical that it make it affordable to knit anything from socks to afghans. In fact, the amount of yardage in one skein is almost three time that of other yarns I have used. Using this for an afghan creates an item of identical look, weight, and quality for less than a third the price. The other wool yarns I have used do offer more choices as to color, but this is a small sacrifice given the savings. In short, the only difference I see between this yarn and other yarns is that this is much more economical. My only regret is that I did not buy more. 5Thin but good The Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool yarn arrived as advertised and is what I expected: a quality, 100% virgin wool yarn that knit easily. As another reviewer mentioned, it is rather thinner than other worsted weight yarns, so take that into account in purchase. Also, it does feel somewhat rough during knitting, but the completed scarf is actually quite soft and warm. All in all, I recommend and have used it for other projects since. In regards to material and the one star reviews: the tweed colors are the ones that are only 78% wool, while the heathers are 100%. I'm not sure if this is reflected in the item description, but be aware that that is where that discrepancy comes from. Also, if you received a thicker yarn, there is a Wool Ease line that has a similar name, is synthetic, and much bulkier than this. Perhaps the warehouse elsent this by mistake, so double check. 4Each color is a little different in texture! The natural color of this yarn is so far the softest of all the choices I've tried. The other colors are much more itchy and while this one is not super soft like merino it's a solid choice for sweaters. Washing with a little conditioner, or eucalan helps make it more soft. It is 100% wool so there is some pilling but it's not that bad. This yarn makes amazing sweaters and socks. It's more of a light worsted, has a nice elasticity to it, and is good to work with.My only complaint is that they join strands in the middle of most balls using a knot. In my experience they knot holds, however I still cut it out and tie in one of my own. Never had any tangles or anything else and usually just the one knot per ball which you can just knit right in if you want. 5You can't beat this value! I love this yarn for the value! 465 yards is a ridiculous amount of wool for 1 skein to begin with, and secondly it versatile as heck. Some people have justly noted that there can be large amounts of plant matter, cotton string, or in organics such as plastic. As well as several knotted points and bits of second cuts stuck in the ply of the yarn, all of which are easily removed/retied. However reports that this yarn smells like chemicals, cables badly, and its terribly scratchy are, I think subjective. The yarn can smell heavily of lanolin which to some might be a really foreign smell, it was to me at first. There are several noils, or bits of second cutting plied into the yarn, but not in such a way that you cant easily extract them. Simply pull the working yarn tight and wiggle the noil loose, Ive only had 1 occasion where a ply was torn as a result of a noil. As far as itchy and scratchy, don't wear this or any organic fiber on your skin. Imho if you wish to preserve it, wear as a second layer. Wool is antimicrobial by nature, but that doesn't mean that the salt and oil from our sweat can't harm and discolor it. If you have sensitive skin, this still may not be the yarn for you, you'll have to suffer with fine cashmere, silk and alpaca...darn. All in all if you value having tons of 'better than handspun', dyeable, feltable, decent quality wool on hand at all times, this brand just can't be beat. 5Felts great. Rating softness with fishermans wool, are you serious? It's itchy but I guess you can call it soft. Would not want a scarf out of this. Great for felting. Knitted several pairs of slippers with this yarn I highly recommend. 5GOOD FOR EVERYTHING! I really enjoy the beauty of a good colorway yarn, but often times they're too thin to knit up in a reasonable amount of time. This is where fisherman's wool comes in, I love knitting with both strands at the same time. This method does several things at once, it1. Allows your knitting needle size to go up since your yarn (both strands together) is thicker.2. Creates interesting color patterning on your piece (*SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS*)3. Make a stronger piece that's able to stand the test of time and hold up to use. 5Nice 100% wool Nice 100% wool, excellent price. I made one sweater, then a poncho. I have enough wool for one more sweater, but I can see that I will be buying more. 5
