Customer Reviews

It does what it says, technicallyThis blackens copper. Not blues, not greens, literally looks like I took a lighter to the copper and the soot built up. Not the effect I was going for. I should've looked through all reviews of the product, or even videos for it.It barely does anything to brass, at least in the same time frames it takes to darken the copper. These are before an after photos of a brass end cap and a copper bar, edited in the exact same way. For some reason the white balance is off on the paper towel, but only slightly. The scuffing on the copper bar is from the brass cap banging against it. I only had it in the a decent concentration of the solution for about one minute.------------------Update 2015-08-29: I've added a photo showing how well it works on brass. I'd taken several eye-screws made out of brass wire and let them sit in an extremely strong dilution (5 drop in about 1/2 cup) of water and the Liver of Sulfur. I left them sitting overnight, so roughly 6-7 hours, with the tap dripping over the sealed container on hot to keep the mixture at a hot temperature. The mixture was quite warm still when I removed the screws. Please excuse the superglue on the plain, untreated, original brass eye screw I put in for comparison.4Patina copper kitchen sink fixWanted to darken bright shiny spots in my copper sink. Having read many reviews I started out using half of the recommended amount.Bottle calls for 1/2 teaspoon to 12 ounces hot water. So I thought I would start out with 1/4 teaspoon chemical to 12 ounces.I figured, instead of just trying to right the bright spots, I would plug the sink up and do the whole surface area.Works quickly! The sink immediately started to turn black so I drained it and dumped baking soda everywhere and started to scrub with a scratch pad. I think, after a week or so, the affect will mellow out as copper does naturally.I thought about taking a vinagar solution and rubbing that on top but I'll give it a few days. Overall, I'm happy because all the little bright spots that show up from husband and kids and house guests not rinsing out the sink, was driving me crazy.5Yields a great blue-black patina on bronze!I used this to patinate a diver's watch with a bronze case. Tried the hard boiled egg method first and that didn't really do anything. I didn't want the watch to turn green as the dial and bezel are cobalt blue and from what I saw on videos this would yield a more blue-black result. And it did! Just a few drops in a bowl of hot water, alongside another bowl with a baking soda solution, and dipping the watch case and buckle for a minute or so, gave a consistent and deep patina. I will post pictures when I return home.I thought it humorous that Amazon asked me to evaluate the scent. I declined. It smells like, well, someone has gas!5Five Starsused to force patina copper, bronze, and brass watches. See effects from using it on attached images.5Quality Product, Excellent results.Purchased this product with the goal of trying to make a new handmade silver bracelet with high polish jewelry store finish, match, as closely as possible , an older handmade bracelet with great old patina. Watched a few videos on you tube. Used 0000 Red Devil grade steel wool and was able to after two tries , achieve my goal. Plenty of product in this bottle for my needs. Have used it on a few other jewelry items and one older silver bowl, Still lots to spare. The bottle seals in a way to protect the gel form exposure to air giving it a long shelf life. Will purchase again when used up.5This stuff is disgusting and ruined my bracelet! The photo is my Pandora bracelet after a routine cleaning with this garbage. If anyone has priced anything from Pandora you would know this is now about $1000 worth of garbage!!! I m so angry I could spit! I carefully followed the directions from the heated water, measured amounts to the baking soda and water rinse. This is disgusting and I wouldn t take this stuff if they paid me!1Gives silver amazing vintage color and depth (after a lot of grease)I bought this after my boyfriend gave me a gorgeous vintage silver bracelet I had admired, then he helpfully dipped it before giving it to me to remove the tarnish and make it shiny. It was shiny all right... and all the great details were impossible to see! I d tarnished silver before using boiled eggs, but I wanted a more consistent and controlled blackening, so I tried this. I am AMAZED at the results. After reading reviews, I only used half the amount given, but otherwise I followed the instructions on the bottle. After about 10 seconds in the dip, the bracelet was a uniform, dull charcoal color. I crossed my fingers and started polishing (using a Blitz polishing cloth). It took maybe 20 minutes of polishing to get the pictured results, but it was soooo worth the elbow grease!! The bracelet is once again a gorgeous vintage piece with depth and detail, detail, detail! Great product!5Excellent Patina EffectI used this on sterling silver, and I have to say, the results are exactly what I wanted. The final pieces have a dark blue - dark gold/bronze gradient type color, which is just awesome looking, much better than monotone silver. The best part, if you follow the instructions properly, the post-patina will still be nice and shiny, so you'll end up with a nice, shiny, aged looking silver piece.I can only speak for the effects on sterling silver (haven't tried other metals listed), but I have to say, if you want to add a patina to your sterling silver, this is an awesome way to do it. It will stay shiny. With regards to the smell, it honestly isn't that bad. It just smells like hardboiled eggs. Even adding it to warm water, it was not bad at all. The best advice I can give it, just follow the included instructions, and you'll be set. Have your neutralizing solution ready, and the pieces nice and clean, and it will turn out fine.5This stuff is great!Works exactly as i had hoped it would. If you are preferring a darker oxidation, just be sure to heat up the water you are adding it to. Once you are satisfied with the color, rinse under water, then drop in water mixed with baking soda, then rinse again. This will neutralize the oxidation. Then polish, leaving the recessed areas darker than the highlights. Great product!53.5 years and still good! When they say "Extended Life" they really mean it! If you're an occasional metal smith who finds that your chemicals expire before your projects do, this is absolutely the way to go.I have many different creative interests, and I got away from metal work for a few years. Recently, I've gotten back into it and needed to darken some copper. I was researching alternatives to LOS, since I knew I'd barely used this bottle of XL Gel since I bought it. I'd worked with standard LOS in the past, and knew it was finicky, so I assumed that even "extended life" couldn't possibly still be good.Well, I didn't find an alternative that struck my fancy, so I decided to give the old bottle a try. Even if I ended up using half the bottle, it would be better than just throwing it away. I started with my standard blend (about 1/4 teaspoon into maybe 3/4 cup of very hot tap water, I've never actually measured) and dropped in my item without much hope of success.Amazingly, it started to change instantly, before I even lifted it out. After only two dips and about 30 seconds, the copper was completely black. It's a good thing that's what I wanted, because I hadn't even bothered to prepare a neutralizing bath!Honestly, I have no idea how it stayed good so long. I kept the bottle in the original ziploc bag with the instructions it came with (mostly to avoid smell and stains from any LOS left on the lid after use) and just chucked it in a box with some of my other metal smithing gear. I think it was mostly stored at room temperature, but it's quite likely that it also spent some time in a hot shed.I'm absolutely thrilled with this product, and amazed that after over three and a half years, it was still as effective as the day I bought it. I have no idea how long it will last, but whether or not it expires before I manage to use it all, this is DEFINITELY the LOS I'll be buying from now on!5
