Customer Reviews

plays like a movie ... a really good movie!I played Mass Effect 1 and really liked it, so I was looking forward to Mass Effect 2. I purchased ME2 in April 2012 and paid 13 bucks for it. The seller was GeeksWholesaler.Mass Effect 2 is a quality production just like the first game. The graphics are great, the voice acting and dialogue are very well done, the storyline continues and is expanded on, and the controls work well. I thought there was a good balance between RPG and action; and the cut scenes are well done too. This game plays like a movie; you interact with characters, you watch cut scenes that take you from one situation to another, and then drop you into the action to continue the story. Lots of fun, and very good story telling. There was one disappointment for me: strong language. Minus 1 star for that. It was noticeably more than ME1. If you want to avoid much of it, then don't interact much with Jack or Zaeed. Aliens don't swear, so you're always safe talking to non-humans! (or choosing them as squadmates)Regarding downloadable content (DLC)...I played the game with the following free DLCs:* Cerberus Arc Projector* Cerberus Weapon Armor* Hammerhead Firewalker Pack* Normandy Crash Site* Zaeed - The Price of RevengeAfter playing game, and since I liked it so much, I purchased these DLCs:* Arrival* Kasumi* Overlord* ShadowBrokerI have not played the above 4 DLCs yet; when I re-play ME2, then I'll play them.I highly recommend the Mass Effect series, including Mass Effect 2. I haven't found another game like these games...yet.Mass EffectMass Effect 2Mass Effect 3Mass Effect 3 Digital Deluxe Version [Download] (it includes 2 DLCs)Mass Effect TrilogyVisit my Amazon wish lists to see my 4-star and 5-star PC games:http://smile.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/BEYS4KHZTP24/http://smile.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/35VC2S12P5A8R/4The same beautiful cinematic experience as ME1, but streamlinedAfter playing Mass Effect 1 (ME1) I should have known what to expect from Mass Effect 2 (ME2), but I have to admit I was blown away once again by the production values of this game. This truly is one of the most immersive games I've ever played, thanks in no small part to the cinematic cutscenes, voiced dialogue, and well-written storyline. As far as the way the game progresses, it's basically identical to ME1. The dialogue system is the same (with the somewhat misleading options that make you say something almost completely different) but adds a new feature: interrupts. Now during certain sequences an icon will flash on the screen, sometimes for a Paragon action, sometimes for a Renegade action, and if you click the appropriate mouse button in time, Commander Shepard will interrupt the dialogue and perform an action -- just be sure to keep your hand on the mouse and be ready!Where the game differs from ME1, it does so in such a way that really streamlines the entire experience. As you may have already heard, there is no conventional inventory to deal with, rather you can use "Weapon Lockers" on the Normandy (and sometimes placed within a mission) to assign weapons to your squad members. In Shepard's private quarters on the Normandy you can change your armor, but there are not many choices of weapon or armor to speak of, so the maintenance is minimal. Squad members can't change armor (except that eventually you can change their appearance, but not in a way that affects their abilities -- it's purely cosmetic). One other nice touch is that all weapons use the same ammunition, so you'll never need to search for specific types of ammo anymore. The way skill points work has also been changed. At the level cap of 30 you will end up with 51 points. You spend these points on 6 (or 7) powers and each power has 4 ranks. The final rank unlocks your choice of one of two possible "evolved" versions that are very powerful, such as the choice between a more powerful version of Pull, or Pull Field, which affects a group of enemies. The powers assigned to each class have also changed from the first game, so be sure to review the differences before choosing a class. Even if you import your ME1 save game, you can choose a new class before beginning the game. Now, having said all that, I still have one big complaint about the game, and it's actually similar to the complaint I made about ME1. The way ME2 is structured is thus: after the initial events, you are given two or three recruitment missions during which you pick up new squad members. After doing these missions, the next big step of the main story becomes available. After this part is done, you are given another handful of recruitment missions, which again must be done before the next part of the main mission is available.Don't get me wrong, the individual missions are fun, well-designed, and offer plenty of diversity of gameplay -- but at the same time, they almost felt like filler between the main missions of the story. Just as in ME1, the actual main plot missions of ME2 really are quite short and don't account for the majority of the game. There are recruitment missions for almost every squad member (those who don't join you from the beginning) and then subsequently each squad member has a "Loyalty Mission" which is optional but very useful to do (and again, they are wonderfully designed). But if you count up the actual number of missions that deal directly with the main story, there are about four or five, each lasting 1-2 hours.I understand that it is necessary to do missions to recruit your squad members, but I didn't necessarily like that doing them was a prerequisite for advancing the plot. What that amounted to was doing a lot of what felt like side quests while the main quest was being intentionally postponed. Of course I want to do these recruitment missions, but it would have been better if we were allowed to do them *at the same time* as we progressed in the main storyline. In other words, pick up a squad member we want, then do a main mission quest or two, then go back and do another recruitment mission. But as the game is designed, you have to do these other missions first before you are allowed to progress the main story. It has the effect of making the main story seem sparse and spread too thin across the span of the game. But I give ME2 five stars simply because it was superbly designed and massively enjoyable. I can't wait to play ME3.5Perfect sequel to one of the greatest games of all timeME2 feels just like what a sequel to ME1 should feel like. The graphics are amazing, the music, the cinematics, the characters come alive, the dialogue options are all there, and there is so much to explore and do and collect within the game that make it worth playing. If you enjoyed the epic storyline of ME1 and were hoping the sequel was just as good, you will not be disappointed with ME2. I actually picked up this game after losing my save file from ME1, but I was able to re-create my Commander Shepherd and continue making the choices I made with ME1. There is also a nice little add-on to the game that allows you to review the back story and make the decisions you made from the first title when starting a new game in ME2.One thing I don't like about ME2 is that the character customization options seem to be lacking. You can't change the equipment or appearance of your squad. There aren't a lot of weapon or armor upgrades. The level up process seems kind of pointless, and I never understood how to use any abilities aside from shooting a gun. So while it is nice to try and use these extra combat techniques, I really don't feel like the character menu does much for me. As an RPG, I would have liked more control over my characters, abilities, and inventory.5Better than the Xbox 360 VersionI ll compare the PC version of this game to the Xbox 360 version.I love playing this game on the PC! While playing the Xbox 360 version, I could barely read any of the words on the screen, because the letters were so tiny. On the PC, the letters are the perfect size. I also think that the combat is actually easier on the PC version, because aiming is easier. One other reason I love the PC version is that I was able to get downloadable content. The Internet connection at my house is so slow it would have been impossible to get downloadable content for the Xbox 360 version. But with the PC version, I can take my laptop to any place that has Wi-Fi and get my downloadable content. (Yes, I play this game on a laptop an expensive laptop.)Although I love this game, I do have a few complaints. The game sometimes crashes at a certain place in Illium, so I sometimes have to restart the game a few times. There s also a glitch in Tali Zorah s loyalty mission. The trial scene (the first one) might get skipped completely, so I have to restart the mission a few times to see the trial scene. There might be patches you can download to fix these glitches, but I m not sure.5Fun Action RPG Shooter cross-genre gameI've never liked shooters ... I started -and stopped- playing FPS (First Person Shooters) shortly after the original Wolfenstein started the entire genre. I don't like the dizzying viewpoint and gameplay focus on shooting and reloading that so many of those games were all about. The Mass Effect line of games has induced me to look at shooter games all over again, perhaps others out there have successfully added real storylines and adventure to the beautiful modern graphics like the ME franchise has.Specifically regarding ME2 ... I played ME1 and loved it, so I bought numba 2 here. The story was still excellent, the graphics beautiful, the puppet animation was among the most realistic I've ever seen. The action was pretty constant, but this game (ME2) put more emphasis on the 'shooter' aspects of gameplay than the previous game, and that bit I did not enjoy quite as much. I'm given to understand that this game was not originally developed for the PC and was actually ported from a console game, so that explains much of it I guess. There simply was not as much fine control over actions as I would prefer, or over other general aspects of gameplay ... even with my mouse controls set to very low sensitivity I would still get dizzy and lose track of my positioning in combat environments when I tried to react quickly to threats and turn quickly to face them. ME1 had better keyboard controls with shortcut keys, and you could access easily your map or journal or other functions so easily ... in ME2 there are no useful keyboard shortcuts. One of the most glaring defects was the lack of a usable mini-map in the main view when moving about. I shouldn't have to press and hold a button to view the threat map / mini-map while in action, it should always be onscreen.Nitpicks aside, I really enjoyed this game, and will of course buy & play ME3 as well (even tho I've already read many of the player reviews that completely slam ME3 -- the complaints are almost all about the storyline not ending the way they wanted, or perhaps the DRM, but most still say the graphics and gameplay themselves are excellent).4Role playing liteRPG is not my favorite genre, and 3rd person perspective even less so. However, I did play the first one and liked it, so I thought I'd give ME2 a try. This one is even better. It does tie into ME1 somewhat. There is a large data base of information about the various species and technology so you can catch up that way. Still, I would not say ME1 is a total waste of time if you haven't played it.In ME2, you can customize your player by sex, facial appearance, fashion, and faction, or just skip all that and take a prefab character. I recommend customizing because you end up seeing yourself quite a lot. I played male in the first one and female in this. I definitely prefer watching a female figure in the frequent cut scenes, but that's because I'm a male. It doesn't change the game any.Leveling up is pretty straight forward and you choose how to spend the credits you earn. On "normal" difficulty, the game leads you through with objectives and goodies clearly marked on your HUD. There is a journal where you can review objectives when they pile up and it becomes hard to remember what's next. Squad commands are few and you always take 2 NPC's with you on missions. However, you get to choose which 2 and level them up before setting out. There's always many more upgrades than you have credits for. Plus you can purchase enhancements from various merchants along the way. It's hard to know where to invest your credits and perhaps in the end it doesn't really matter. Like I said, this is lite RPG gameplay.Gone is the wheeled drop ship and tedious exploration for meaningless resources as in ME1. What remains is the Paragon/Renegade gauge; the purpose of which I still don't understand. For those who don't know, it's a estimation of your relative goodness as measured by your choice of dialogs. If you choose aggressive and arrogant verbal responses then your character becomes more renegade. Conversely, if you choose cooperative and sympathetic responses, you become more paragon. What this does to the game is unclear to me. It doesn't seem to matter.I should say that I have only played about 7 levels and I never play online so I can't say what happens there. I still think there's a lot here to like for people who don't want to spend months character building as in those heavy RPG games. There are so many great games to play I just can't see sticking with one game for more than a couple weeks. Oh, I should also say that I'm 55 years old, which probably explains why I don't like online play. As you get older, well, I'll just say I consider online play to be the deep end of the pool; more suited to the young and adventurous. There are a few flaws even after the 1.02 patch. I have gotten stuck once and the controls are a little rough. However, it's a beautiful game and runs smoothly.5Mass Effect Series an A+Mass Effect 2 is one of the greatest games ever. It reminds me of KOTOR and Fallout 3, but more hands on and better graphics. Most of your travels will be with 2 npcs, whom you get to pick for each mission. One of the many great features is that they all get xp, so you don't have to evenly use them to keep them up to date. Pretty much all of them are useful and have decent AI. Combat is clean, easy to command your npcs, and is pretty much an over the shoulder shooter where you can hide behind the environment for protection. Personally I don't like shooter games, but this combat engine works great. It's also easy to get your people to use bionic powers, switch ammo types, switch weapons, heal, etc - all mid combat. This is one of the best combat designs I've seen in years.Role-playing and storyline are a big part of the experience. Many twists and turns, lots of options on how to handle things, and a tracking system where you can improve your ability to pick special "charm" or "coerce" options. ME2 also has an option once in a while to use the charm/coerce to interrupt an NPC and do a special move/action... which is quite entertaining. Another great design is the ability to manually pick which skills to work on for each NPC. If you don't like doing that, there is an auto-level button. You also get to specify which weapons each character uses, which is nice. There are hundreds of planets that you can visit. In general terms, you go to a specific planet to do a mission. The game feels very open-ended, because you can visit any system/planet you want and do missions in any order. The game manages to keep the difficulty where it should be, regardless of what you do first. And it's certainly nice to have your own ship and explore as little (or as much) as you want. Missions are clearly labeled on the map, so you can easily move the game forward if you want to.Replay value is decent. This is because you can bring different members along on a mission and get different dialog/reactions. Interesting to experience them. Also, the second time through, you and your npcs keep your experience and equipment (although NOT research), so you aren't starting from ground zero. Second time through it's easy to just do the main plot missions, since they are always well labeled.I thought the music/soundtrack was done well. Also, special effects and the sense of impending-danger (like running through an exploding ship) were very well done. There were many times when I jumped in my chair or found my pulse beating fast. There's some pretty furious action in this game.Another nice feature is the ability to import your Mass Effect character, which gives you some good starting bonuses. Also, if you play Mass Effect 2 more than once, you can import your first play-thru of Mass Effect 2 into your second run of the game. Both really nice features. There aren't any major bad things to say about this game. Design is almost perfect. Some minor downsides that I found:1) Limited ammo. Rarily ever a problem, but it does seem somewhat silly. Why carry around 5 different weapons and limited ammo instead of carrying just a couple weapons and more ammo?2) Having to remember to buy fuel/probes if you want to explore a lot. Most travel doesn't require fuel, so not much of a problem. You don't need probes, but scanning planets and gathering resources allows you to do some upgrades.3) A very rare bug (maybe 5 times in the game) where you get stuck on furniture (by explosions/getting hit) and you can't get back of it, forcing you to load from the last save. So save alot and rotate slots... although the game does a really good job of re-loading part way thru the mission if you get killed. You usually won't have to redo the entire mission, which is a great feature.4) Even the easy level can get an inexperienced player killed a lot. However, overall the easy level really is easy enough for people like me who don't play shooter games. So don't let this frustrate you, because you'll learn how to survive. In conclusion, this is a fantastic game (as was Mass Effect), which is why it's up for some big awards. If you like a mix of role-playing AND gun-based combat, this game will be a fantastic experience.5THE RPG video game you want to play !(I hope I've used the term "RPG" or "role playing game" here correctly - to me an RPG game means a game that focuses heavily on character interaction and completing quests as opposed to the traditional 3rd person "shoot 'em up" type game)Mass Effect 3 received a lot of buzz when it came out , due primarily to the popularity of Mass Effect 2 I think back when MS2 was released.. as of this date (May 2012) amazon is selling Mass Effect 2 for a price so low that it would be crazy not to buy it especially if you can order enough stuff to take advantage of the free shipping and handling option ..There's not much I can add to the reviews already written by others here (note that my review is just for the PC version ) .. I would strongly recommend the following :- buy a new not a used copy especially since the new copy is currently selling at a dirt cheap price from amazon.. you have to register the game online apparently and from what I hear if you buy a used copy then try to register it, it becomes a REAL pain... you also get a certain amount of free downloadable bonus game content if you buy a new copy of Mass Effect 2- get a hold of and play Mass Effect "one" (the original Mass Effect game) before you play this.. seriously... if you do what I did, play Mass Effect 2, fall in love with it then get Mass Effect "1" ... the first game will be fun but not as much fun as it could be because you kind of already know what's going to happen in Mass Effect 1 due to all the references to it that come out in Mass Effect 2 when you're playing it - which to me is totally awesome how MS2 builds on MS1 that way but it makes it a "bummer" going backwards tooAll the positive reviews for this game are right on the money .... gorgeous graphics, a cinematic storyline that draws you into the game and gives it an emotional impact, detailed realistic responses and interactions with the "non player characters" (everyone other than the character you are playing) that really give the game it's "wow" factor. The publisher of the game has this shameless thing going on where you can purchase additional game content online for Mass Effect 2 .. this ticks a lot of people off who feel it should have been included with the game in the first place when you buy it and I can see how that would be annoying.. but put it this way, I like the game so much that it worked as far as making money off of me ! :P .. I will be purchasing and downloading that additional game content when I play through Mass Effect 2 a second time, that's how much I liked the game ..The other reason you should buy and play Mass Effect "one" before Mass Effect 2 is that you can "import" your character from Mass Effect one into Mass Effect 2 and it affects your gameplay in Mass Effect 2.. if you run into an NPC you had dealings with in Mass Effect 1 , that NPC will react accordingly in certain situations in Mass Effect 2 based on what actions you took in Mass Effect 1 which I think is pretty darn awesome.. for this reason you should probably not uninstall Mass Effect one from your PC until you complete Mass Effect 2 ... likewise when you complete Mass Effect 2 and find yourself itching to play Mass Effect 3 when the price for MS3 drops to a reasonable level you probably want to leave MS2 on your PC so you can import your MS2 character..One other note.. the game will pop up this wierd sort of menu interface type thing when you install the game before you start playing the game "for real".. don't ignore that interface , it lets you adjust the video options so your game will match the resolution on your PC and monitor.. if you ignore this and just exit out of it your game will look bad on your PC and I found it to be a huge pain in the butt using the video options that are available once you start playing the game to make the proper adjustments..5It's hard to find fault with this masterpieceI didn't play the first Mass Effect, so I'm new to this series. However, I have been a fan of Bioware games since Baldur's Gate, so I thought that I would give Mass Effect (ME2) a shot. Glad that I did. This is one of the best games that I have played in the past ten years. It's a well-polished, entertaining sci-fi thriller with good controls, great graphics, memorable characters, and a vast galaxy to explore. If the game has a flaw, it's the main story line--you know, small team of unlikely heroes defeats galactic threat against overwhelming odds. It's the usual sci-fi fare. Nonetheless, the good stuff is in the details, and ME2 gets just about everything right.Gameplay: The game is largely a third-person shooter, with a good dose of roleplaying and exploration. The shooter part is entertaining and accessible and gives each battle a bit of flare. Over the course of the game, you gain a number of high-powered weapons and upgrades, which make firefights more dramatic. The roleplaying elements mostly involve upgrading a few abilities of your character and his/her allies, as well as making various decisions about quest plots. The characters in the game are well-developed, and your teammates have their own stories and quests for you to accomplish. There are dozens of quests in the game. Some are part of the main quest; others are related to your teammates. Additionally, exploring the galaxy can open up a number of optional quests, which are typically short but imaginative. Many of the quests have multiple stages and help to flesh out an intriguing story or character. The game is worth playing a second time just to see how differently some of the quests turn out based upon your decisions. The ending, which is exciting but inconclusive, obviously sets up the sequel (ME3).The team structure of the game works quite well. You can usually take 2 teammates on missions. For the most part, they hold their own in combat and don't have pathfinding issues. Most teammates are talkative and add an illusion of realism to the game. The diversity of species in your squad makes for some interesting matchups, though I found all of my allies likable. You can even start romances with selected characters, though the game seems to limit you to only one such coupling per playthrough.Graphics: ME2 is a gorgeous game. Character models and animations are life-like, and the environments are beautifully rendered. The game has a lot of cutscenes which could be right out of a first-rate sci-fi movie. The game is well optimized, and I had no trouble playing it with a Geforce 8800GT video card on 1680x1050 resolution (mostly high settings). A lot of care was put into creating the lush visuals, which give the game a very immersive quality.Sound: Like the graphics, the game has high-production values in the audio area as well. All of the voice acting is good, and the weapons, ships, explosions, and so forth are convincing. The soundtrack is fine, and the music generally fits the mood of events.Technical issues: The game is extremely well polished, at least with the 1.02 patch applied. In over 35 hours of gameplay, I did not experience a single crash, freeze, or other technical error. This is rather amazing for a PC game. ME2 comes with a decent manual. Very importantly, the game has a very reasonable DRM system. You need only have the disk in the drive--no need for any online registration or authentication that would otherwise make this single-player game dependent upon an online server. I really do hope that they keep this system for ME3.Replayability/Value: Given that I bought the game here at Amazon for $15, it is one of the best deals out there. It is worth the original asking price of $50, so I definitely got my money's worth. The game's flaws are minor, such as a rather conventional main storyline, some gratuitous profanity, and a bland but necessary mini-game involving mining planetary resources. However, the cinematic and technical achievements of the game are such that these minor flaws are just quibbles.I will replay this game again at some point (it takes about 35-40 hours to complete), but for now I'm looking forward to ME3. I highly recommend ME2 to anyone who likes shooters, roleplaying games, or simply a well-told and exciting story. You do not need to have played the first game in order to understand and enjoy this one.Pros:+gorgeous presentation, high-production values+well-formed and memorable characters+interesting quests and moral dilemmas+great visuals and voice acting+accessible controls and gameplay dynamics+reasonable DRM+does not require a playthrough of the first gameCons:-very typical sci-fi plot-gratuitous profanityRating: 4.5 stars4Best of the trilogy!I think ME2 is the best of the trilogy by a long shot! It is similar to Mass Effect but with easier controls and just funner in general. You spend most of this game recruiting people, trying to create a powerful team to stop the Collecters. Each character you recruit also has a personal mission, which is completely optional, but helps you gain their loyalty. I feel this game has the most 'game changing' choices because of the final battle. I'm not going to spoil anything but there is a lot of replay value in this one.I've had a few sound spikes where it skipped dialogue, but you can just turn on subtitles if you don't want to miss anything. My only complaint is that your original LI doesn't get much screentime in this game, however in a way that is good as it presents a way for you to be 'un-faithful' and romance someone else.P.S. Remember to download the latest patch, or else you will not be able to import your original Shepard over to this game. (At least that's how it was for me!)5
