    Somewhat simplifiedThis review does NOT contain spoilers. 58 y/o white male opinion. If you liked ME2 then I think you'll like this one. I must say, it starts better than it ends and I rate it slightly lower than ME2.WHAT'S NEW IN ME3 -- Resource collecting is out- The Citadel was simplified down to 4 small areas- The Galaxy seems a lot smallerRequires an Origin or EASports accountTHE STORY - Reapers suddenly attack old alliance outposts. Shepard is re-activated and given back command of the new Normandy 2. Mysterious weapon technology found on Mars and presumed to be Promeathian. The Crucibel, as it is named, is incomplete with key parts missing. Reapers invade the unprepared Earth and homeworld of humanity is in danger of being overrun. You set out to find the Crucibel's missing parts and gather forces together to reform the alliance and save Earth.THE GOOD -- Player can select Action, Role Playing, or Story mode at the beginning, or switch during the game- Import ME2 character & achievements if you have them, but it is not required- Character selections - Male/Female- Game starts easy for those without ME experience- High production values- Voice actors from Battlestar Galactica 2004: Michael Hogan as "Cmdr Bailey" Tricia Helfer as "EDI" and Martin Sheen returns as the voice of "The Illusive Man"THE BAD -- Dialog and reputation have no real affect on the game, it's an illusion, man (hehe)- About halfway through, I'm just getting into it when a new mission appears at the top labeled "Priority - Earth". So of course I played it. Well, it's the end mission. The finale. So before the game was half over I already played the ending. Then I could continue but then I was caught in a loop where the last two missions just repeat over and over. Perhaps I need a Internet connection to proceed, unlock something? There's more than a dozen missions left I couldn't complete.- Ridiculous fighting controls. The same key (spacebar) is bound to run, jump, crouch, use, find cover, and pick up. This forces you to fight with your keyboard as well as the enemy. Always has been but seemed worse in this version, or I'm just sick of it.- War map is oddly disabled. Why have it? Is that a multiplayer thing?- Several side missions fail to add anything to the experience. I speak of the Geth Server mission, if you have play it already. What the heck was that? And there are others.- Less interesting side missions generally- Environments never change. Every time you return to the Citidel nobody has moved. Pugatory Bar music never changes.- Every time a mission ends you must talk to the Admiral's hologram then run back to the bridge. Why? It's stupid. It should just fade out and place you back on the bridge.3Great game on a terrible Service.This game is just great and fun. If you are here to buy the game and haven't played the first too I suggest you jump on those first, or at least start from the second game, I promise it will make this one all the more rewarding. It's a fun third person shooter with fun dialog and a great story. This is a game that I think just about anyone can pick up, play, and enjoy. The mutiplayer is also fun and very satisfying too!My only problem with the game though is EA's Origin. The service is still very young and can be problematic. On PC this is where you will be playing the game. Sometimes you can not log in to the game you purchased whether it be single player or multiplayer. I would seriously recommend that if you want to truly enjoy this game, you might have better luck doing so on console platforms rather than PC.Hope this helped you in making a choice on your purchase~4An amazing story that you won't regret playingRegardless of the negative backlash that some have assigned to it, Mass Effect 3 is an effective and riveting conclusion to a story over 8 years in the making. Bioware tried hard to keep the science at least believable in its story realm, and the conclusion really does make sense with your choices along the entire series. It's a story that really feels like you're actively participating in an enormous galaxy filled with hard choices, betrayal, serious consequences and fun. Yes, fun, as well as comedy, is in here too.Most impressive is the way the game can be enjoyed even if you've never played the first two games. The sheer amount of variables that are possible make every playthrough something new. It impresses upon you just how much writing was done for this game to make sense to brand new players, while also incorporating the choices of those who played either (or both!) of the first two games.In all, it's a fantastic deal now that prices have dropped, and the downloadable content is some of the best ever created. Well worth the price.5An excellent conclusionMass Effect trilogy is one of the best role playing sagas made up to its release. It's cinematic, dynamic and compelling. You play the part of Commander Shepard, and must save life as we know it from the Reapers, who come from outside our galaxy to harvest all intelligent life forms for their own diabolical yet strangely self-justified reasons. You must assemble a team of trusted comrades and crewmates, unite the galaxy and repel the invading forces not matter what the cost. The stakes are as high as they get!Mass Effect 3 (ME3), the final of the trilogy is masterfully balanced with exceptional combat dynamics, music, storyline, dialogue and visual effects. There are gripping cinematic moments that run chills through your spine. The story is vindictive, morose and unforgiving. You are pulled relentlessly to the precipice of each episode involving your beloved comrades. Each is heart-wrenching, and uniquely tempered to the choices you make. You will laugh, shout and cry your way through every scene.The game style is still third-person shooter, with limited ammunition and combat pausing like ME2. The skill trees are more dynamic than ME2. Each skill has six levels, and the final three levels are a choice between two different characteristics. This allows for a great deal more customization of combat style and team composition. Weapons are more modifiable, and you can better customize Shepards armor with additional equipment and new premade suites. Questing can be a bit difficult at times, since they do not update or provide many details in your quest log with which to follow them. No more time consuming mining is necessary, and the galaxy map is more dynamic than before. Scanning still takes place on a system-wide level. It's still a little time consuming, but not as bad, nor necessary.You don't get as many teammates on your squad as you did in ME2, which is a bit of a bummer, but not terrible either. You get to see pretty much everyone from the previous games. ME3 is more about their stories than having them stand around fighting with you all the time. The crew you get is diverse and creative considering it's relatively small size. Dialogue options are still thoughtful and entertaining. Renegade and paragon quick-clicks are still available, which was always fun. Voice acting is excellent in this game, as usual. Shepards facial construction was a little disappointing, as it all seemed to get filtered into one principle frame that didn't really vary a whole lot, nor did they import from ME2 very well. you can still get back your scars by gaining renegade points though, which is nice.One important note is that you need to download the free extended ending and install it before you finish playing. If you don't, you might be very disappointed. The choices you make in the first two games are essential to the resolution of many important elements you will encounter. Without making these choices yourself, the game may feel incomplete or not as responsive to your unique choices. If you do, this game is absolutely perfect. The only issues I noticed were a few typical Biobugs... peoples' eyes may occasionally roll into the back of their heads at inappropriate moments, or a person may disappear as you're talking to them. Some people are also bothered that you need to play multiplayer games in order to get the best ending possible, but I personally didn't mind. Other than these finite issues, this game is solid.If you're a sci-fi fan in any way, and can manage first-person shooter style gaming, you must play this game. If not for any other reason, because of the impact it has made on the gaming community as a whole. Mass Effect has introduced elements of film, role playing and sci-fi fantasy in a manner that has not been done before. The voice acting, galactic culture and psychological dynamics of this game make choice, and relationship building the core of this game. You are immersed in the world. You invest in your crew you live as one within this game and are brought along for an incredible ride the whole way through for the most personal experience you will ever get from a product of entertainment.5Could have loved it a bit more--if it hadn't been for a couple thingsI found this game's storyline very immersive, the world beautifully created, and the game mechanics fun to play. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys solid RPG's. I have a particular fondness for RPG's that allow you to create a custom character (especially options for a female one, seeing as how I'm a woman and find playing a male character usually detracts from my overall enjoyment of a good RPG--After all, if I'm going to have people hitting on my character, I'd rather have them be studly guys lol). Aside from those aspects, I also greatly enjoy RPG's that allow the player to gather a group of companions whose storylines slowly emerge and through dialogue and actions you are able to gain their trust and loyalty. Mass Effect has all of these things I enjoy in a good RPG in spades! :D -- That being said, I personally hated, hated, hated the ending of this trilogy. *****Spoiler Alert****: I hated that one of my favorite characters has to die--I mean what an awesome quest that could have been, to go to his adopted home world and help hunt down a cure. That could have been so amazing! Anyway, if that character had been somehow allowed to live, and the end had been wrapped up differently, I'd have had very little negative to say about this game and I would have given it all 5 stars as I've given the first two games.4Play the Other Games FirstPlay it. Then mod the heck out of it! be sure to have played the previous 2 games all the way through. I think that's why so many people complained about this game, just like they did with Halo 3. Stating your Mass Effect experience with the 3rd game is as stupid as starting your Lord of the Rings experience with The Return of the King. One doesn't simply start a trilogy in the final act. ;)Oh, and brace yourself; the true reason why people got pissed is because the ending is decided with a multiple choice question like in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, ultimately making every "important" decision up to that point virtually meaningless. Enjoy the trilogy for the journey, not the journey's end.5Great journey, lame destinationGreat game, but knock 1 star off for bad ending and another for banning mods on PC version.Let's start with the good - graphics, voice acting, gameplay, etc. It's even more simplified from the ME2, which itself was simplified from ME1, but it isn't yet to the point of being dull. I certainly don't miss mining dozens of planets for elements. Combat is still quite satisfying and challenging enough, even if you import a power character from ME2. However, you probably aren't playing Mass Effect for the combat...Mass Effect is a story driven game. Sure, there's action, but this game is carried by the story. And through ME1 and ME2, we have followed an epic story that is seemingly sure to deliver on the promise of an epic ending. The first 2 games did deliver, with outcomes closely tied to in-game choices. However, when the grand finale in a series delivers just an "everybody dies" ending that is color-coded based on hundreds of choices, the story has failed to deliver on its promise. That is what you have in ME3. Oh sure, EA eventually released a free DLC that mellowed out the bitter aftertaste.Hopefully EA learned the right lesson from this as they develop Dragon Age 3. However, the cynic in me sees them learning the wrong lesson, which is that gamers are passionate about satisfying endings and EA will now charge us for them (like Asura's wrath, damn you Capcom).3You need the DLCFirst and foremost, I downloaded all the free DLC before starting Mass Effect 3 so I did not experience the vanilla game.The version of the game I played however, was excellent. Most reviews I have read say the game would be 4-5 stars if it was not for the ending. I didn't see the original ending and I'm glad I didn't because the ending that I experienced was a completely appropriate way to end this series.I have absolutely no complaints about this game the way I did with the second. The game mechanics were more simple than the first game, but done in a way that did not make you feel like it was dumbed down.One thing that I really liked is the flow of the side quests. In the previous Mass Effect games (and most RPGs) the sidequests feel very tagged on and have little to do with the "main plot". In ME3, the sidequests for the most part feel like part of the story. Even the little collection quests are intertwined.The story was emotional and left me in tears several times. Some major plot points for the series were concluded and depending on the choices you make, were either extremely uplifting or incredibly sad.Overall, 5 stars. Happy to have played this series and a little sad it is done.5ME3 MultiplayerI only play the multiplayer so I cannot comment about the story and other aspects of the game that most gamers may be looking for. If I could play the campaign with friends I would gladly play it. The multiplayer does have some bugs in it like sometimes bosses will not show for one person while everyone else can see them. Those rounds you tend to die for no reason and the death messages start glitching. Frequently I need to restart the game for bugs like this. If you melee sometimes other bugs will resolve themselves like being unable to take cover. This was meant for the console so I am not surprised that there are some bugs.[Also another thing to note is you cannot play with other people from other consoles.]5 out of 5 for gameplayThis game is amazing and the multiplayer does not get boring the more advanced you get. I am to the point where I can play gold with most characters and even take a large point lead with the krogan solder.4 out of 5 overallThere are a lot of bugs that I have been unable to resolve. I fear they may be fixed if I erase the game and re-install it but I do not want to take the time as this is a big game. Also, the two other people I know have the exact same problems with the game and they are also running windows 7 x64. Most of the bugs I am experiencing were not there initially and now happen every few days. I still cannot minimize the game without risking a crash. An example of this would be if a friend calls me on skype. Sometimes the game will just freeze when I maximize it and doing this a few times can eventually fix the problem.I love this game but just keep in mind the glitches for multiplayer and the campaigns4Avoid Electronic arts DRMElectronic arts is EVIL. There DRM breaks with windows updates and their tech support cannot get it to work. I bought this originally as a download and played it. It was a great game. A year later the game would not even open because it could not shake hands with the Origin client server. I bought this to see if a new license would do the trick. After I completely removed all traces of the game and the client, I did a clean install of the newly purchased copy. The origin client crashes immediately upon selecting the game start icon just as it does with the original copy. I have two separate computers one with Nvidea 970 graphics and one with ATI 290, same result on both.2
