I read all of the reviews before buying this pedal - I was extremely happy get this pedal in the mail and be able to play it. After only a few hours of practice I noticed that they pedal was already having issues. The design is good but overall performance is awful. I do not play very hard, mainly folk and country style music and the pedal still would not hold up. I tried to adjust the pedal for over an hour to get it back in working order and had no luck. The wire began to fray after one use which leads me to believe that there will be more issues with this model down the road. The pedal is also very loud and clanky - with a metal on metal sound. There was not any lag in the pedal while it worked but once it stopped there was no bringing it back - I have been playing for over 20 years and was looking a product to use in an acoustic set up but this is not it. Buyer beware and good luck. I bought a pedal mount and decide to turn my Cajun around to use a standard pedal. 1Falls apart within the first 15 minutes of use! If I could give this zero stars I would. I bought 2 of these and they both fell apart within 15 minutes of use! The pins came loose and some of the jingles flew off! I wouldn't recommend these to anyone, not even as a child's toy. I also have the LP foot tambourine and that one works great (and doesn't fall apart). .. Note to Meinl: Really? You can't make these so they don't fall apart? What a joke! I usually find Meinl products to be pretty good but they should be embarrassed to put their name on this piece of junk! 1Thinking about buying a second one!Saw someone playing one of these and had to have one. We have this in our living room and everybody asks what it is. We turn on some music and my husband starts drumming away and people love it!We also like the fact that it has a non-skid surface, which comes in handy when it doubles as an end table. Lots of fun, and we found plenty of cajon lessons on YouTube. Definitely recommend and thinking about ordering a second one.5Well made, nice balance between snare and bass.Very nice for acoustic sounds. How I learned of this is important. My family and I were visiting a church and the hymn singing was beautiful, and we loved the cello solo, for example, and heard a nice percussion that was non-intrusive. I have never seen a cajon before, and at first, I could not tell where the sound was coming from until I realized that the percussionist was sitting on his instrument! The church used a single mic near it, and he kept a steady, even bass while adding the "trebles" or "snare" sound, gently and appropriately. It was beautiful sounding so...our musical family read the Amazon reviews (our norm!) and settled upon this. It is well made, has the nice bass sound I was looking for, and we purchased the brush drum sticks recommended for it and the results, thus far, have been really nice for our home recording (Tascam DP-008EX).Great for acoustic groups, church groups, or home music, the Meinl Percussion HCAJ1NT is perfect for home multi track recording and sounds wonderful behind the guitar, acoustic bass, ukulele, and so on. We have much to learn on it, and you tube is replete with many free lessons, but with the specially constructed "brush" drum sticks, it is a great home instrument for percussion.5A disappointment - not a quality instrumentAfter reading so many positive reviews for this cajon, and viewing/listening to the Meinl-produced video for the product, I was really looking forward to the drum's arrival. It looks and feels sturdy enough but the sound was a profound disappointment. Little or no separation between 'snare' and 'bass' tones. Very narrow dynamic range. Totally lacking in the distinctive cajon 'snap'. Yes, I experimented with every possible adjustment for the internal strings... nothing yielded a good sound. Just a flat, monotonous rattle. Happily, I've since bought an LP and also a Pearl cajon and have fallen in love with both. It really is worth paying just a little more for a quality musical instrument. This cajon barely qualifies as a toy. I would especially not recommend this cajon for a beginner - it will put them off drumming!2Doesn't fit the JC50LBNT Birch Wood Compact Jam Cajon I bought the Direct Drive Pedal to go with the Meinl Percussion JC50LBNT Birch Wood Compact Jam Cajon that I bought, which measures 10.2 x 10.2 x 15 inches. The back clamp on the pedal won't quite reach the back of the Cajon to hold it in place. The screw needs to be a 1/4" longer to accommodate it (See photo). Also, I had to turn the beater upside down to hit the bottom of the Cajon as it was too tall even at it's lowest and hitting the top of the Cajon(see Photo). I may end up returning it or possibly modifying it by putting a thicker rubber piece on the clap end to be able to tighten it up. Maybe Meinl has a longer lug clamp for the back, I'll have to check. It's a bummer because I really like the pedal.**EDIT** Also, the L bracket that supports the arm doesn't have any support at the 90 degrees of the L which makes the pedal wobble a little bit. Needs to have a small rubber foot under it or something to stabilize it.**EDIT 2 12/16/2017** The brass screw head popped off that tightens the Pedal assembly to the Cajon clamp.**EDIT 3 12/14/2017** I am updating my review. The vendor contacted me and had MEINL send me out a replacement brass screw fo tighten the pedal assembly to the cajon clamp. Once I installed it and made some adjustments, it works good. Aside from the few adjustments I had to make (added a circular foam wedge so the cajon could be tightened into the cajon pedal, turning the beater upside down, and putting a small foam brace under the L bracket that holds the foot bar to the pedal), I like it. 4First cajon, and I couldn't be more pleased.This is my first cajon, and I couldn't be more pleased. Perfect size and weight for lugging around to gigs, and I love that it is adjustable. An allen wrench is included, and stores in a little slot accessible through the hole in the back, and it's easy to adjust the wires from the screws in the bottom. Nice "bass" sound and crisp "snare" sound. And the price is hard to beat (pun intended).5Great Entry Level Cajon I bought this Cajon because it was inexpensive and I wanted an instrument but did not need a professional $500 cajon. I am not a percussionist but I am a musician. I have played Guitar, harmonica, conga, recorder, trumpet and various other instruments as a music minister at my local church since 1980. The instrument is not flashy or decorative but it works as described. The volume is good and has several tones from the front panel and several other tones achieved from the the sides. The top seating surface is coated with a gritted non-slip sealer that adds just the right amount of non-slip without being so rough that it would damage clothing. The guitar strings that provide the snare effect are shipped loose and will need to be adjusted to each users liking. As the description of the item states the allen wrench is located inside the instrument for storage. There seems to be confusion that to adjust the snares you will have to remove the allen wrench form the inside so you can tighten or loosen the two allen screws on the bottom of the cajon. This was very easy with plenty of room to adjust the sound to your liking. I have heard better snare sounds on more expensive instruments but for an entry level instrument it is just fine. The materials are as pictured, clean and undecorated. Others have noted that the cajon is small and it is on the smaller side but the it is the size described. I am 5 10 200 lb man, and when I sit on the instrument I feel a bit low but it s not uncomfortable to sit on and play. For the price you can t beat this cajon but you can get some great beats out of it.5Nice light jingle for beginners or advanced players. Perfect for adding a light jingle to any percussion or other instrument. The elastic strap that holds the item to your finger is tight but not uncomfortable. I find that I can wear it on any finger from my thumb to pinky, and it will stay on fine even with vigorous hand movements. The jingle sound is not too loud or intrusive as a full tambourine. I play it with both percussive and tonal instruments to add some dimension to the sound. The quality, in typical Meinl fashion, is top notch. This item also would be great for someone who like to tap their hands to the beat, but are intimidated by a full instrument. In a group setting, this would be the thing to give to the wall-flower to get them involved in the music. Easy as pie to play with a light pleasant sound. A worthy addition to any percussion style. 5Mediocre Quality with a Warped Tapa/FaceplateOut of the box, there was a terrible buzzing and deadness to it. I adjusted the strings and loosened tapa screws at top, but the buzzing persisted. I tried taping the strings to the tapa on the inside and that alleviated some of the buzz, but not all. Now I'm not talking the sizzle of a snare, but an annoying bzzz sound. I also couldn't get the top, left corner to lift off so that I could get a nice slap sound so I inserted some cardstock between the faceplate on the left to lift the top off a bit. I can see the corner of the tapa was clearly warped.After a few weeks I tired of the buzzing and decided to remove the string and add my own snares. For $15 I bought a 20 string 14" snare and cut it in half. When I removed the faceplace, I was shocked! It was warped something terrible! No wonder the strings were buzzing. They couldn't lay flat because it wasn't flat. Anyway, I screwed the snares onto a rod that I mounted in side. It sounds MUCH better with snares. However, I'm not sure how it was supposed to originally sound as I received a very defective one. I know this is a budget model, but the QC needs some work.I love it now, but only after a lot of research and a couple hours of my own work along with trial and error.2Solid craftsmanship, adjustable snare, so fun!!This Cajon is awesome! I tried to build my own, but doesn t come close to this. It has an adjustable snare function, and they include an Allen wrench (and place to store it as well). The wood is smooth and clean and there are no weak or loose seams that make you think this thing is cobbled together. Yes..I spent more than some of the basic cajons...but there s a reason you go Meinl..why have I heard of them? Because they are quality. So happy with my purchase...came so fast. Whether you are in a drum circle, on stage, or just playing with friends...this is a solid addition to whatever the ensemble.5Great price, good quality5 stars for quality and price. I purchased this for my 18 year old son who's very much into music. He's been asking for one of these for almost 2 years so as a graduation gift I decided to purchase one for him. Seemed with the reviews on this one it was the best for the price, I'll be darned if they weren't right. My son is 5'8" and weighs about 220 pounds and this thing holds him with no issues. He just bangs away with his hand music on this. He enjoys it very much and he's had it over a month now. I am satisfied with my purchase and he's happy as well.5Sounds pretty good right out of the boxFigured I should try this one due to the large number of positive reviews. Sounds pretty good right out of the box. Simple and sturdy, but I feel like it's still missing something. There are now much higher quality model cajons out there that are worth spending the extra money on, but I'm sure I can find a student who will be able to learn with this for a long time.3Great sound - low quality Bought this together with a MEINL cajon, and played my first gig last night. First off, I love it. It sounds great, and makes it really easy to add some extra dynamics to a gig where you are just playing a cajon, e.g. you can use the tambourine for emphasis later in the song as it crescendos or whatever. Definitely helped give our acoustic set a fuller sound.That said, unfortunately as some others have indicated, it fell apart midway through my first set. The metal pieces are affixed in place by a small metal pin, and the pin vibrated out of its slot, resulting in the metal pieces falling out. It's probably easily remedied by gluing the pin in place. I can't think of why I would ever need to pull the pin out. However, from a quality perspective it's definitely lacking. 2Yes, it's a box, but...!I'm extremely happy with my Meinl Percussion cajon! I've been a percussionist and a multi-instrumentalist composer/arranger for close to 40 years. Recently, through becoming acquainted with the work of vocalist Susana Baca, I also learned that the cajon is fundamental to Afro-Peruvian music. The cajon is, in fact, a wooden box with a sound-hole opening. I think that most percussionists have had a time when we ran into a cardboard box that offered an interesting variety of percussive tones to explore and we then spent some amount of time exploring those tones and constructing rhythms from them. Basically, we made improvised music on a cardboard box. Well, I'm going to tell you that playing the cajon is very similar to playing that cardboard box, only it's made to be a durable enough instrument so that it can be sat upon as its normal playing position. I will not suggest to you that the cajon is an "easy" instrument to play. Just sitting on this thing, slapping it, is going to be annoying to most people who hear it, because some of the tones are quite loud and rumbling if they're not moderated in a musical manner and application. For a reasonably musically astute,committed explorer of rhythms, I believe that this cajon offers an interesting and diverse range of tones and textures. I've already gained audience appreciation on my very first day of owning my cajon and I look forward to developing my facility on this instrument for the rest of my days. I have not played other cajons, so I'm not able to compare this one to any other. Also, I am not experience, as yet, on the cajon in particular. I'm a guy who beats on things to extract sounds and create rhythmic patterns with those sounds. My Meinl Percussion cajon seems to me to be thoughtfully well-built and I have fun exploring its many tones. I'm well-satisfied with my investment and look forward to continued growth.5
