Great for Recording I bought this unit to edit and add drum parts to recorded songs as well as record drum tracks for entire songs. I'm using Presonus Studio One Pro 4. This unit works great with Kontakt Drums like Steven Slate Drums and other VSTi's such as Session Drummer and MT-powerdrumkit. The pads are sensitive enough to handle snare rolls, flams and more articulate playing. I didn't have to do any midi mapping. Each pad was mapped automatically with each of the VSTi's I used it on. Maybe I got lucky. I bought heavier drum sticks than what the unit came with. This is a great product for my studio and for what I needed. It took a little time to get use to the foot pedals and playing on it, but well worth to time and money well spent. 5This electronic drum kit is really fun if you want to learn how to play drums ... This electronic drum kit is really fun if you want to learn how to play drums or just fool around. First, I'm not a drummer. I've played guitar and bass for many years, but I'm not a professional musician. I love the drums, but never took the time to learn to play. I always wanted an electronic drum kit so I wouldn't disturb neighbors and because I believed it would be easier to play than a real drum set. But, these kits were always pricey and I figured if I didn't like playing, it would be a waste of serious money. The PTED01 is the most friendly set I've ever seen for beginners. It is super easy to play and use. I mean it is really, really easy to use. The symbol and kick drum pedals work great except they slide around a little, but you can just simply tape them down to avoid slipping. I've only had the set for one day. I had a blast playing, but I won't feel guilty if I don't play all the time because it is really inexpensive. It seems to be great for kids. And the drums sound pretty good. Without an amp, you aren't going to get performance level sound. Even with an amp, I wouldn't use these to play gigs, but for your garage, they will rock. 4Great sounds, midi doesn't work very well though At first, I didn't really like this very much and was put off by how much space it took up on my desk. But after the 2nd day of playing it, it's a pretty awesome piece of equipment. The sounds it has are very good, at least upon going through and testing various kicks. It's a solid sounding instrument. It doesn't make too much noise in the headphone out, either, which is good for my recording purposes. I think there is definitely something to be said for actually playing drum parts for songs, as opposed to letting a drum machine or virtual drummer do it all for you.The part that I don't like about it is the midi aspect. When I plugged this into my computer via USB, I excepted it to be better than it was. This, to me, is probably the biggest downfall of the machine. It still plays drum sounds when plugged in, much like a midi interface even. Also, it is WAY too quiet when functioning as a midi controller. I don't know if this is Logic's drum plugin's fault or what, but I found it better to record the line out through the headphone jack. This is kind of a shame because I could edit the drum rhythm had it played well through midi, as well as quantize and add "swing" to the groove this way, aside from also choosing specific kits or drum sounds. I haven't completely given up on the midi functionality yet, but it does seem to be more functional using its own sounds.Overall, I think this is a really nice piece of equipment, and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone pretty much. 5Great set for my kids. It still makes a lot of noise even with headphones. My kids fell in love with an electric piano we bought last year so I wanted to get something else for them to express themselves on (and bang our their energy). I looked a lot for an entry level drum kit - something that wasnt a full set that would take up a lot of room but still sound good enough that it could help my kids foster some love for rhythm. I am no drummer but this sounds pretty decent. The kids definitely prefer to play with headphones because the speakers are not that great.The dial control which is used to change the sounds and sound settings is a little flimsy. Sometimes I spin the dial but the machine doesn't respond.One thing that surprised me is that even when they play with headphones - there is a lot of noise because of the drum sticks banging on the pads (and sometimes the kids miss the pads and bang on the plastic). 4Great fun While this kit won't replace a higher end electronic drum setup, it offers some unexpected features we love. It also has drawbacks. My 11-year-old grandson has the summer off from his drum lessons, but wanted to practice regularly and learn some new songs. This set seemed the best bet for that and we are pleased. It didn't take him long to figure out how to use the controls to set the configuration he wanted and he especially liked the provided loops with timer that allowed him to quickly learn and play along with these relatively simple routines. That gave him a boost in confidence to try more complex things.Out of the box, we used the AC adapter to plug the unit into an outlet because we didn't have the necessary 6 C batteries on hand. Once we buy those he'll enjoy having the set more portable. I worried that it would be too loud and possibly annoying to listen to so I had some headphones on hand for him to use (you need ones with a fairly long cord to reach from the back of the unit under or around it thus out of the way and to the user), but we never plugged those in because it is more pleasant to listen to than expected and of course there are volume controls. We downloaded a song he knew onto my iPhone and started that so he could play along. He set the volume so it matched the playing song and did pretty well.His major complaint was that occasionally a drum head doesn't sound as it should which would distract his rhythm. You do need to hit them 'just so' to get the response. I guess when you're used to a full size kit, it's a bit awkward to hit these small pads consistently and in the right place. There are 'dead spots' at the edges of the pads and sometimes when he hit two pads at once in a faster riff, one might not sound. That might have been a product of his inexperience, but it's something to think about if you expect to use this kit for more than practice and play.As a listener, I thought the cymbals and some other sounds should have more reverb than they did, but that may be something you can set. There are a lot of options for settings.The thing that ended up entertaining us all for a long time and was totally unexpected was that in addition to the many choices for drum set sounds, there are over a hundred other sounds to choose from. Everything from explosions, thunder, various animal sounds, laughter, footsteps, a creaking door, an eerie scream to car sounds and convincing war sounds. You can set each pad and pedal separately and save the configuration just like you can with the drum set sounds, so my young drummer ended up creating sets to match stories he made up and then punctuated them in the telling with various sounds. That was a lot of fun.Bottom line: It was easy and fast to set the unit up initially using one of several preconfigured drum set combinations assigned to the pads and pedals that are pretty standard, I guess, as he was able to instantly identify which pad represented which corresponding drum set piece and was satisfied with the sounds, but I was amazed at the options available to set things up to suit specific needs. He had no trouble figuring out how to do this without the instructions and spent hours at it, making up stories to punctuate with sound effects as well as playing along with provided loops and demos and real songs playing on other media. If he sticks with his lessons he'll need a higher end set than this, but for now this is fine and decent value for the price. 4Sounds Realistic When Plugged Into Keyboard Amp We bought this drum kit for our 11 year old. Here's why:- It's compact- It's electronic so we can vary the volume and even wear headphones- It has many different selectable drum sets- It costs significantly less than what a decent digital drum set would cost.My son loves it and so does the rest of the family. We have formed a family band and this drum kit fits in nicely with the guitar, bass, and vocals when plugged into our Behringer K1800FX keyboard amp Behringer ULTRATONE K1800FX 180-Watt 4-Channel PA System / Keyboard Amplifier. This drum kit sounds incredibly realistic and can get very loud with the keyboard amp. With the keyboard amp the drums can keep up with my 100 Watt Fender Mustang III guitar amp.It's good but it's not perfect:- It does not register every hit, so it might frustrate you if recording. It's good about 99% of the time.- There is no provision for rim strikes.- The pedals are cheesy and tend to move around while you're playing.All in all though, we love these drums and highly recommend them.Update 6/27/2013 - I made a stand for the drum set which dramatically improved the performance of the kicker and hihat pedals. Performance of the set is now close to a professional digital drum set with a smaller footprint and at 1/4 the cost. Total cost of the stand was $26. Here are the components:- Target TV Tray $8- Piece of shelving for bottom of stand free- Angle bracket with screws to mount shelf bottom to stand $2- 1" Angle brackets with screws to hold pedals in place $1- 4" long screws with nylon locking nuts to go through "hinge" of pedal $1- 4 large screw mount tie straps to hold 4" screws free- 1 non slip rug pad from Target $6 5A great, affordable, good sounding drum pad set! I've played percussion for many years, and have played cheap trap sets, high end trap sets, and several electronic drum kits. I bought a Pyle-Pro PTED01 for my 9 year old son, and I was nervous that I wasted my money. I was wrong. This device sounds pretty damn good, and actually has decent response to accented drum strokes and rolls. The pads are small, and take a bit of practice to get used to, so you'll hit the plastic body quite a few times. If anything, it teaches patience. 4Was only used about a dozen times before it died! This was a Christmas gift for our 9 year old. He loved it and really enjoyed playing it....... until today, just a month and a half after he got it. The drum unit no longer works! He thought the batteries were dead, but it still wouldn't work when plugged in. Turns out he board is fried! So disappointed that this turned out to be such a crappy product, especially after all the searching we did to find the perfect alternative to a real drum set. I wish I could give it zero stars, but I had to give it one to write this review. It was good when it worked, but you can't play an electronic drum set when the electronic part is junk. 1Awsome Set I love this kit! I am a 12 year old drummer, and have owned a full sized drum set for about a year and a half. I have always wanted a drumaet in my room, but my parents always said that it would be too loud or too big or something else. (can't blame them) Then I stumbled across this gem. I explaind to my rents that it would fit on my desk and i could wear head phones. I got it yesterday and I will say that it is very well built. it is sturdy, and the hand percussion feature works well. if you are on the fence buy it. it is worth every penny. The pads are very responsive, exept for the very edges. hope this helps 5... my son this year for Christmas and it is great except there was one problem I bought this for my son this year for Christmas and it is great except there was one problem. One of the pedals does not work at all. Unfortunately we have to unplug the only working pedal back and forth, from the high hat to the kick drum. We love the product but it is kind of an inconvenience. We also cannot simply get a replacement pedal which again is disappointing. One would hope when spending that much, all the parts would work. 3
