Customer Reviews

Well made and sounds great!I use small percussion in my recordings of classical guitar and ukulele music and bought the 12" and 8" frame drums to add a little color and drive. I play them with lightly with bare fingers and hand and it sounds great: plenty of overtones and endless timbre possibilities. With a close mic I get a conga to bongo like tone and surprisingly deep tones in the center of the head with brighter higher tones on the rim. Both are well made, an easy carry and goes well with temple blocks, claves, chimes and other hand percussion. The the higher pitched 8" drum mixes better with guitars and ukulele and I can play it actively like bongos. The 12" is deeper pitched, like the tom on a drum kit, and must be used sparingly as it has falls square in the guitar's main range. Both are great little drums.5I purchased this frame drum to use for an outdoor ...I purchased this frame drum to use for an outdoor drum circle. I have a natural hide frame drum, but it becomes unusable outdoors due to the humidity here during the summer. I have had no issues with the Remo Finerskyn drum due to humidity. The price point is also low enough that if something happens to it with others borrowing at drum circles, I won't be heart broken. Would consider getting a larger size for a bit deeper tone.5Ordered 2, Used for Past 1.5 months, Holding Up WellI ordered two of these and have been using them for about a month and a half now. I purchased them to do neurologic music therapy (NMT) and imitation exercises with our son. Our son receives NMT services at this time to support regulation, motor skills, and hopefully the long term development of his expressive language skills. Although we do spend a great deal of time working on encouraging the latter, for me, as his mom, I know he can still function effectively as an adult given his ability to communicate with his speech device. So I actually consider his overall ability to regulate to be the most important of the things we're working on right now when it comes to helping him function in the world outside of our house. But I spend copious amounts of time encouraging both, and this is one of the things we use. I purchased these specifically because they are more similar to the ones used at his clinic, and I thought the visual similarities would help him adjust to them.So these don't see heavy use, because we also have a Remo Lollipop drum that we purchased at the same time which he surprisingly prefers despite its different appearance. I think the reason there is the handle allows him to hold it easier and you can produce a quieter tone on it. For this, how we use it looks like this: I might have him in his swing, and I'm swinging him and singing "The Ants Go Marching..." as I march, and then we bang the drum on the "Boom, Boom, Boom" part. The swinging and the drumming simultaneously increases the impact to his vestibular system, which is one of his black holes of sensory seeking needs. And I will move the drum a bit each time so he has to track it with his eyes. Or I might have him imitate me hitting it while he's spinning on his chair, again for the same reason... that sort of thing. So we use these a couple of times each week, the Lollipop drum is the one he wants to use most days. Thus far we have no condition issues of any kind with them. I do think the sound is fine for what we are doing with them. The top can be cleaned easily enough, although it will stain. One of them already sports a baked Cheetos colored fingerprint stain. Doesn't just about everything in this house by now? ;) I got the 12" because I figured the surface area would be a good size for him to hit, but it wouldn't be too big for him to carry (he's 5), and that's working out well. So overall, we haven't had any problems, and they are working great for what we need it to. I can't say how they would hold up with longer durations of use. For that, I might be worried that the top vellum looking material might separate and crack come from the plastic, but that is only a hypothetical area these could potentially break down based on heavy use. At this point 1.5 months in, everything still looks great and sounds the way we need it to.514" is a Good Size for a Practice Bodhran, 10" is Too SmallFiberskyn means that the skin is made of clear plastic and some kind of process is used to make it look like animal skin. Actually, it looks very realistic and I think it's much better than leaving the drumhead clear. The frame itself is made of wood and painted black. The outside of the frame is covered with a thin plastic veneer to make it look like it's made of rosewood. The Remo Frame Drum is made in Taiwan and is very, very well made.I purchased a 10" Remo Fiberskyn Frame Drum, and 10" is too small to use as a bodhr n practice drum. I then purchased the 14" Remo Fiberskyn Frame Drum. There's a surprising difference between a 10" and 14" frame drum. 14" turns out to be a good size for an inexpensive bodhr n practice drum (16" would be better). I taped the rim of my 14" Remo Fiberskyn with black electrical tape and it sounds pretty good. I taped it 1" around the rim instead of the standard 2" because the 14" Remo Fiberskyn is a little smaller in diameter than the standard 16". Also, I taped it using two layers instead of one, and I think it made a noticeable difference (use your browser to search on "the bodhran maker paraic mcneela" to see how to tape a bodhr n).After playing a 14" Remo Fiberskyn for a few weeks, I purchased a 16" Rosewood Deep Rim Tunable Bodhr n from Ireland that cost 200 Euros plus shipping (about $225 in American dollars plus $35 shipping). If you purchase a bodhr n from Paraic McNeela (or anyone else), make absolutely certain that it's TUNABLE. Some Paraic McNeela bodhr ns are NON-TUNABLE, and this may not be what you want (use your browser to search on "non tunable bodhran"). If it doesn't say TUNABLE, then it's probably NON-TUNABLE. Tunable bodhr ns have small adjusters on the inside of the drum that you can see very clearly. You might be happy with a Pakistan made Roosebeck tunable bodhr n. I returned my Roosebeck bodhr n to Amazon because the drumhead was overly blotchy and I personally thought it looked ugly (not like the picture). Roosebeck bodhr ns are made in Pakistan, are very high quality, and they are tunable. I just didn t like the drumhead. My neighbor liked the looks of the Roosebeck drumhead, but I didn t.All Remo Fiberskyn Frame Drums are non-tunable, but they re very inexpensive, and you can play one until you decide to spend more money and get a high quality bodhr n.Note: Bodhr n is pronounced Bow-rawn (like the bow of a ship) and Paraic is pronounced Pau-rig (the second "a" is silent and the Irish "c" is pronounced like a "g").5Great introductory frame drum for the price!I have never owned a frame drum, or any type of drum really, so bought this on faith...(err, price). My main desire was to learn how to call down the spirits while simultaneously bugging my neighbors with the noise, then maybe walking barefoot to a nearby park and joining a ganga smoking drum circle to show off my lack of skills.Seriously, I bought this little drum strictly for pleasure. I've always been a fan of drumming but never owned any of my own.It is a quality made product, for sure, the only ding against it is that the product description (as many others have said) is not accurate. No it doesn't have holes or a thumb hole in the rim, which I suppose would've been a plus. (Really, that's my only critical comment about the product)I'm a newbie, and I look forward to playing with this to learn the basics! The 10 inch drum feels awkward to me though, but that's mainly because I've never used a frame drum before. We'll see how this goes! :-)4AMAZING, but not for small handsThe drum is top quality, no doubt about it. The tone is so beautifully clear. I am absolutely in love with this drum. The only thing I would say is that people with small hands like mine should be aware that the frame is really wider - wider than I would have imagined - and it unfortunately does not have a cut-out to make holding it easier. If you have small hands, I would consider the thin frame.4Missing holes, but still a great drum! It's a great drum but doesn't match the description: The Remo Fiberskyn 3 Frame Drum features a wide body shell and a thumb notch with four holes located around the circumference of the Acoustic on shell. There are no holes to affix anything to use as a handle. That's the only reason this gets 1 less star than I would have otherwise given it.4Would RecommendI Love my 14" buffalo but wanted something more travel friendly. Wasn't sure if the 10" would have adequate sound. WOW - good volume, affordable, the size makes it easy to hold.Sound isn't as low as my other drum of course, but it's not high pitch, still in the low range. Especially when using my fur covered mallet - Great for sound therapy. I'm very happy with it!510 Bad Sound, 16 Great! 5 Stars for 16 Remo Buffalo Drum which is the 1st sound in my short clip here. 2 Stars for this 10 Remo (2nd sound in my video) as the sound is tin like and in my opinion fine for a child. I don t see the opportunity to rate various Remo drums separately which would make more sense. I made a horse drum for Shamanic work which is often affected by weather. The 16 Remo travels well no matter the weather and I use this in private and group events. It has cross roping on the back like a authentic hide drum that size would so is easy to hold. I ordered the 10 for convenience of out of state events but I am returning it due to the sound. It also has no rope, hole or cut in rim to hold and if you re considering it, does not come with a beater.2Excellent frame drum . Perfect for drum circlesI love this frame drum. For the price, it has a wonderful sound. Its lightweight and easy to transport. As a drum circle facilitator I always recommend this affordable drum to new players. I even painted on mine with oil based pens and am very pleased. Remo makes great drums. This one did not disappoint.5
