Easy to use, durable, rich lovely color
My budding artist loves these! I wanted to go beyond the usual crayons and markers and art kits and get her more sophisticated and open-ended art supplies for Hanukkah. I asked her wonderful art teacher for advice and she suggested the chubbies because their girth makes them easier for little hands to grasp and use and they are very durable. They don't break! They are very easy to use, not messy, can provide cool effects when used with watercolors, and have rich depth of color. I highly recommend them.
5I wanted an oil pastel; soft, creamy. ...
I wanted an oil pastel; soft, creamy. This is kind of waxy to me. Maybe it's suppose to be with the word "cray" in it, but the description didn't give me the impression it would be. Blends okay. For the price, and being admittedly a beginner I guess they're okay.
3I'm inspired to try more than just "coloring" now!
A friend recommended that I try out these Cray-Pas for some of my art projects; I was unfamiliar with oil pastel sticks like these. There are enough colors in this starter set for my purposes, but I can imagine real artists wanting even more variety. I love the creamy feel of the sticks and bold pigment they lay down. I'll probably upgrade to the 48-color Expressionist Cray-Pas once I get more experience using this type of color.I'm still experimenting with using pastels on different kinds of paper and other surfaces; so far the only one I have rejected is plain notebook paper (too smooth?). Love drawing with these in my sketchbook and also on canvas. The Sakura website has a lot of very cool techniques to try out with these pastels; I really like the dotting and masking drawing methods. My one star off is because these come completely loose in their box (no inner plastic wrap to hold them in place), and they were a mess: the different colors had wiped onto each other, leaving no "pure" tips on the sticks. I tried to clean some off by hand, but mostly I just had to waste product by drawing out lines until the smudged dots were worn away. I understand that this is the Junior assortment, so these sticks aren't boxed up with the same care as expensive art supplies, but it was still disappointing to see my new colors so mistreated.
4i love these so much
i love these so much! yummy way to draw. they have good, thick color on a piece of paper. they don't smear. the colors in the stick form look exactly are identical on paper. awesome! love these
5Much smaller than thought
It does come with 50 pieces. The packaging is nice. The color is smooth. I haven t tried to blend yet so I can t speak on that one.I can say, however, that these are absolutely itty bitty oils. I expected a bigger size so I m kinda disappointed. However, they re very inexpensive so it s not like you can t readily get more if you run out fast. But if you re looking to do a big piece with them, these aren t for you.
3... real long time ago and had a lot of fun with them Well
As a professional artist most dont work with these I just remembered using them a real long time ago and had a lotof fun with them Well, still having fun with them but there is much to be desired about them. I am using them on woodwhich I like better than paper. I am looking forward to trying the Expressionist ones which I also ordered. I wasntready to order the pro set for the money. Will probably end up using professional large oil sticks that I can pick myown individual colors. But have fun with these..probably the kids will love them.
4work well
I bought these for a school and replaced them with the same brand they had before. They work very well, the school is happy to have new ones. Thank you
5So blendable
Good value for the money. Maybe they shouldn't be called junior cray pas, because they are easier to use and blend better than more pricey products.
5Good luck with blending or layering - more like crayon
I wanted to try oil pastel because I was fascinated by the color, videos showing blending techniques etc. It turned out that there is little blending or layering you could do with it. Sometimes another layer is erasing the earlier one (like scrubbing). Once you blend, it is also like erasing the layers. Some colors actually could blend well with one another. Also, hard to peel of the paper cover. Basically it doesn t give me the impact as I expected from what I ve seen on tutoring videos. Disappointed. Feel like crayons. Nice color range, would be nice to have dark violet
2The Best for Beginners
If you've never used oil pastels before, you should definitely try this set. This was the first set of oil pastels I've used because of my AP Drawing class (I'm a junior in high school) and I have to say, I was very impressed, especially after seeing the price. I thought I wouldn't like oil pastels because they're not as easy to blend as soft pastels but I've come to like the texture they make. The set has a nice range of colors and very vibrant.I attached the first drawing I've done using oil pastels (on the back of an illustration board) to show you the set's capabilities. Now, I know that this is nothing like Van Gogh's expressive self portraits but I just want to prove that beginners can do a decent job with this set.*By the way, this is my mom's account
