    Well made, but design issues I had been using a cheap wood dapping block, but it had become so marred from the edges of the metal that I decided to spring for a heavy steel dapping set. There's no doubt that this set is well-made and it will last forever.I've had this set for about six months now so I feel ready to review it. As much as a want to praise the usefulness of this product, I can't because it has serious design flaws.Anyone who works with metal knows that there are degrees to the depth of dome you want to create. In other words, you don't always want a deep concave shape -- sometimes you want only a slight doming of the metal. I realize now that I usually don't want my metal to be domed so deeply. It seems like this dapping block was designed to help the metal smith turn flat metal into bowls. It's just too deep, and this is the case with all of the individual depressions. They are all too deep.I usually go back to my old wooden dapping block now when I want to create a nice, basic dome shape to my metal pieces. A better design of the steel block would be to have a large shallow depression, and sequentially deeper depressions around the sides of the block. But on this one, there's no "starting" place -- the most shallow depression is way too deep. 3OCD about tool organization? A heads up... Good set, though, a couple issues arise. For starters, the punches - there's a lot of 'em, and they aren't labelled. How hard could it be to differentiate the sizes, you may ask? I'll be honest - 20/20 vision, I couldn't tell the difference between several. And I'd never know if I were to have received several of the same size punches. They're that close. Which goes to my next gripe - organization. If you're the kind of person that needs to have everything meticulously organized, this set will drive you bonkers. I'm not that kind of person, but it still irked me a bit that I had no way of knowing which punch went where. I shouldn't need a set of calipers to put a punch in a wood block. Last, the block itself had what looked like a slag defect in one of the faces. It's extremely noticeable, but is only a cosmetic blemish. Still, irksome.Performance wise, can't complain. It does it's job admirably. All parts coated with a nice oil so as not to rust. The little blue box it came in looked old and worn, but the parts inside were new. How long has this bad boy sat in a warehouse?Ah well, a star lost for all of that, but, it does what I need it to do when I need it to. 4Good Product but Beware of Description This is one of those tools that I never knew I needed until I had it and now I don't know what I ever did without it.I needed itty bitty depressions, and the block has a smallest depression of 4mm in diameter. I was hoping for 3mm, but I suppose 4mm will do.The depressions all seem to be hemispherical (just measured a few to confirm), i.e., each is half of a sphere.1 quality issue:The holes in the wood block to store the punches aren't drilled very precisely. A few of the larger punches don't fit into their respective holes.1 product description issue:The description says: "Punch Head Sizes(mm): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 & 24"This is INACCURATE. Each punch is labelled with a number ranging from 1-24, in order of increasing size, but the numbers do not correspond to the actual size of the punch head. This is just for easy storage -- the holes in the wooden block are numbered correspondingly. The actual punch head size of each punch is also labelled on the wooden block.In case it's helpfulSmallest punch ("punch #1"): 2.3mm diameter spherical headLargest punch ("punch #24"): 25mm diameter spherical head 5Don't always believe what you read in reviews! I can't figure out why there were so many complaints about the block being too deep. Using a smaller doming punch than the size needed in the block has allowed me to create pieces with the perfect doming.Also, while the wooden block to hold everything is cheap, each slot was labelled in MM to help organize things and always find the proper size. 4Necessity for metal working Excellent product for the price. Have used mine to help make coin rings and dimple copper bracelets. So far no rust and no breakage. Also there is a size for anything you might need. 5Seems like it is well made Seems like it is well made. Each piece is marked with the size and was easy to put everything where it belonged. It was well packaged and arrived quickly. No problems with the punches I have used. 5excellent quality and speed excellent quality and speed 5A very nice basic dapping set! This is a very nice dapping punch set and is definitely worth the $50 on Amazon. The pieces arrived well-preserved in oil (no rust or corrosion) and in excellent condition. I gave it four stars instead of five for one main reason: If you need punches that are a specific, accurate size, this is not the set for you. The punches are graduated in size, but consider the sizes marked on the stand as "guidelines" rather than actual measurements! As examples: The smallest punch, #1 is marked 2.3mm but actually measures 2.6mm. Punch #5 is marked 5.9mm but is really 5.7mm. Each punch is marked with its punch number (not the metric diameter) but the numbers are difficult to read due to the black-oxide finish. The good news is, the punches tend to be more accurately marked as you get into the larger sizes, differing only by 1/10th of a mm or so after #12. Also of note, the depressions in the block are not exactly matched to the various punch sizes, which is important for fine jewelry construction, but not that critical for general use. None of these faults matter to me and it's still a very nice set and good value for the money, I just wanted everyone to know what they were getting. If you are just getting started in jewelry-making, this set will be fine and will save you a significant amount of money, since a high-quality accurately-sized Italian or Durston set will cost at least $250 - 500. Enjoy! 4As advertised As advertised 4Small, but sturdy. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but the set feels solid and sturdy. The dapping block is very tiny (and quite cute haha) - good for small pieces. 5
