Customer Reviews

Johnny Mathis and Christmas a perfect combinationNo one sings a love song or a beautiful Christmas song better than Johnny Mathis. When you put love and Christmas together look no further than the God given talent of Johnny Mathis to give it life. Someone once said Christmas just ain't Christmas without Johnny Mathis....How true...I wrote that review for a Mathis video on YouTube some years ago and it's still true today as it was then. I love this new Christmas CD. Some of the songs are new recordings from previous Mathis Christmas albums, with fresh new arrangements and now includes duets with some other talented singers, Billy Joel, Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan and Susan Boyle and others. There are also new Christmas songs that do not appear on other Mathis Christmas albums, my favorites so far are "Count Your Blessings", "This Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Darling". I say so far because, the more I listen to a Johnny Mathis recording I hear something in the song that makes it grow on me. Great work Mr. Mathis, keep the Christmas and love songs coming.5Still Perfect! This is a stunning Christmas album with a number of pleasant surprises. Johnny, at age 78, proves he can still boogie with a great up tempo take on Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and, backed by the Jordanaires, he gives a Nashville touch to "Home for the Holidays." Others have already lauded the gorgeous duet with Susan Boyle on "Do You Hear What I Hear?" but I think the selection that moves me most is the pairing of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with "White Christmas." Johnny sings with both Vince Gill and Amy Grant on this medley and it takes my breath away. I had never felt the anguish of either song as much as I do in this inspired coupling. Much credit for this beautiful album must go to Fred Mollin, the producer, because, not only are the arrangements intelligent and fresh, but the sound and balance are flawless. As a lover of acoustic guitar, I have never heard this instrument used more effectively than on this album. Just listen to the beginning of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and you'll know what I mean. I hope Fred Mollin produces Johnny's next album for it's clear that they bring out the best in each other. "Sending You a Little Christmas" is the most wonderful holiday album Johnny has done since his very first one over 50 years ago. Christmas and Mathis: still perfect together!5The "King of Christmas" Gives Us More JoyHow can one think of Christmas and not think of Johnny Mathis? I have the first Christmas album on vinyl he recorded and over the years have added his cd's to the mix. And like fine wine, his voice has aged to a velvety smoothness that accentuates the joy and happiness of the Christmas Season. No recording artist around can come close to the magic Johnny Mathis gives this season of the year and losing the other Christmas Masters, Perry Como and Andy Williams, Johnny and Christmas are intertwined; you think of one, you think of the other. Johnny Mathis is a "National Treasure" among music artists and to have yet another album from him to help us celebrate Christmas is a present in itself!5Johnny Mathis helped make Christmas even more beautiful! This album is a Christmas wonder! I have loved Johnny Mathis' music all my life. This one is a gift to the world from him! Sending You a Little Christmas and Decorate the Night have become my favorites. So sentimental and sweet. I loved the fact that he included duets with Billy Joel, Natalie Cole, Jim Brickman, Gloria Estefan, Susan Boyle, The Jordanaires, and Vince Gill and Amy Grant. You just can't go wrong with pairings such as that. But Johnny has definitely brought a new classic to Christmas music and this is an added treasure to all the recordings I've had since the 50's. His voice is a treasure!5Perfectly Always Mathis, Mathis Always.Always Mathis, Mathis Always. I am biased because I have been one that "I fell in love with Johnny in 1956 and haven't come out of that spell he cast on me since." In all honesty if there were no other recording artists since that time it would have been just fine with me becasue that is how much I love his voice and his kind and gentle shy nature. I will add that I have a Johnny Mathis collection room in my home. There is something for every music taste in this album, I choose no favorites becasue when Mathis sings anything I listen.5He Still Has the VoiceIt's amazing that at age 78 Johnny Mathis can still go up and get those high notes -- and then hold them! I had some fear when I bought this album that I'd find he just didn't have it any more. I've been disappointed by highly-praised praised work from both male and female singers whose voices turned out to be shot -- former sopranos with vibratos you can drive very large trucks through, or baritones straining to reach even mid-level notes. Not so Mathis, who must have bionic vocal cords and doesn't sound much different than he did in his younger days. As for this album itself, it's another excellent collection with two cuts, both duets, standing above the rest: "The Christmas Song" (with Billy Joel) and "Do You Hear What I Hear?" (with Susan Boyle). That last ignores the usual big finish and closes quietly instead, a brilliant piece of work. All told, this is the best new Christmas album I've heard in years.5what a wonderful christmas presentI have listened to all of Johnny's previous christmas albums and have loved all of them." Merry Christmas still remains my all time favorite. That being said "Sending you a little christmas" has its own special niche and is a fabulous addition to the Mathis "christmas album collection. It richly earns every one of the 5 stars I have given it. At least 7 of the 12 selections are tied for second place as " my favorite". My favotite is "This is a time for love" with --Count your blessings,Decorate the night, merry christmas darling,do you hear what I hear,Mary's boy child, this is christmas and Sending you a little christmas tied for second as my favorite selections on this album. This album is a superb example of musical artistry at its best.all aspects of this album are at the zenith. Many thanks to Fred Mollin for highlighting once again the "Mathis" gift to the USA and the world. What a wonderful christmas present!!5Wow!!Johnny, where have you been? A close friend told me Johnny had a new Christmas album. I'll be honest here. Johnny Mathis is not at the top of my list of male vocalists but close enough to pay attention to, from his very first jazz-flavored album of 50+ years ago and through the years that followed. If you haven't heard Johnny Mathis lately this album will be a surprise; a very pleasant surprise. You know the old bit about age and fine wine? Certainly applies here. JM, you may never have sounded better! Thanks for a terrific holiday music treasure. And don't stop!.5Once again, Mathis does not disappoint!!!I just listened to the entire CD and it is GREAT! The title song is one I have not heard before and it is delightful. Billy Joel and John compliment each other nicely singing the classic "Christmas Song". My favorite duet has to be "Do You Hear What I Hear" with Susan Boyle - absolutely beautiful. "Home for the Holidays" with Johnny and the Jordanaires is upbeat and snappy and really fun! I really enjoyed "Merry Christmas Darling" (one of my all time favorite Christmas songs)and the only thing that would make it better is if Karen Carpenter were here to sing it with Mr. Mathis. The musical arrangements are classy and so pleasing to the ear and the choice of songs gives a variety of Christmas classics and more modern tunes. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys holiday music ~ there's something for everyone!5Incredible!-There is just no other way to describe this work of art. This man never ceases to amaze! Here he is at 78 years young with in my opinion is probably his best performance ever, and that includes his wonderful freshman effort on his first Christmas outing. The production is as perfect as you're going to get, his voice is at the best i've ever heard him, and his song selection is spot on. But what really brings a true sense of the season to these songs we've all heard hundreds of times are the striking duets with the likes of Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan, and Susan Boyle. These voices all blend together like a fine wine, and this is what seals the deal for me. Did i mention that i have been listening to Johnny since 1974 when i was even 21 years old, and all my friends were into guitar rock and roll, there's just no one like him.If you haven't gotten your copy don't wait it'll be just that much more time that you have to enjoy this work of art.5
