So-So Skin of CIV 5I pre-ordered this... I guess I never learn... CIV 5 was amazing with all of the expansion packs, but Beyond Earth is a bit of a let down in comparison. I played CIV 2 and Alpha Centauri in the mid 1990s, and I was very excited for this one. Hopefully Firaxis will patch and DLC this game into something as great as CIV 5 became, but I would hold off until then. The game is graphically beautiful! However, this game is missing one really big quality, FUN gameplay. It just isn't fun. Every game feels like a grind. The game doesn't really engage you. CIV 5 has a bright and cheery aesthetic, whereas Beyond Earth is darker and alien, which is great on the surface, but the reality is that it doesn't really work for Beyond Earth. The dark and gritty look would be excellent if the gameplay was darker and grittier, but it isn't. The opponent AI characters are flat and un-interesting. The resources are confusing and non-intuitive. The tech web is pretty confusing too and it isn't clear what you need to research in order to meet your victory conditions. I would steer clear of this until it is heavily patched and/or has some good DLC offers. Also, I paid the full pre-order price, only to see, 3 weeks later, the game being offered on Steam for half the cost. I wish Amazon had price protection for games because that is pretty frustrating. Why would we ever want to pre-order anything when the chances of prices falling quickly are so high?3No real strategy; no narrative; no new elements; no fun.Product arrived exactly as Amazon advertised; however, Firaxis did not deliver on the hype they created. Let me start off by saying, I have played CIV 5 for more hours than I probably should have; I love that game. While CIV: Beyond Earth (BE) is a "successor" to CIV 5, to me, it does not feel like it. I understand this is a brand new game, but--like many games of this new generation--CIV: BE feels incomplete. It feels like Firaxis spend all their time on creating new concepts and technologies, that they just threw everything together and called it a game without making sure all their "improvements" really work together.Firaxis promoted the new affinities as something that would be game changing; it is not. In fact, I see them as more of an annoyance. For example, following the Harmony Affinity, in which you strive to "become one with the aliens," forces you to collect Xenomass. Can you guess where the Xenomass is located? It's conveniently placed right under the alien nests (hives) you are trying not to disturb. If you want the resource, you will have to kill the aliens and pillage their hive, thus breaking the Harmony "path" you are on.Something else that frustrates me about BE, is its lack of narrative and interaction between other Civs (sponsors) in the game. Throughout my playthroughs, I felt as if my Civ was isolated on the planet by themselves. I couldn t even trade with another nation until I became their "friend." God knows how I do that because I sure couldn't figure it out. The city-states I coveted in CIV 5 are now gone. It was so helpful to be allies with a city state in CIV 5, as they would give you awesome resources and culture points. Now, in BE, city-states are called "outposts" and are essentially limited to a place to send your convoy for only science, production, food, or gold in return; no resources. They also do not give you quests and you have to protect them from aliens, or they will be destroyed. In the end, everything feels unpolished. For the $50 I paid, I feel like I should have really spent $20. I had high hopes for this game, but after about five or ten hours with it, I got bored and booted up CIV 5. Once Firaxis fixes the monotony that runs rampant in this game, I might give it another shot. For now, I will stick to CIV 5, where, as I play, I actually feel like I am creating a civilization that will stand the test of time.2I am very disappointed and I feel like I paid 50 bucks for a terrible mod to Civ 5I have extensively played Civ 4 and 5 in the past by myself and with friends and I was really excited when Civ BE was announced. Unfortunately, the game was a bitter disappointment for me. The new additions to the game felt like a step backwards. For everything new they added to the game, they removed a feature or two. The number of playable races is abysmally small. The new tech tree doesn't really make sense. Why do you have to discover biology and chemistry in the year 2600? I can give them the benefit of the doubt that it is hard to imagine / predict future technology. Instead of barbarians you get aliens, which bring about an annoying interaction with other races when you kill the aliens for invading your lands or destroying your trade routes. The Harmony / Purity / whatever and the interaction with other races can get annoying. The tech tree is difficult to navigate. The UI of the game is terrible. The map is unusable. The icons are too small and you cant change it in the options, I run the game at 2560x1440 resolution and I have difficulty seeing the icons of the screen.Quite frankly, I am very disappointed and I feel like I paid 50 bucks for a terrible mod to Civ 5.Don't buy this game at full price, it is not worth it. If I could get my money back, I would.1Not ready for primetimeI'm a big fan of Civilization for so many versions now I can't recall. This is OK. It's kind of what should have been released for alpha testing. There are a lot of potentially interesting features (another version of spies, satellites, stations, aliens, trade, etc.) But the details haven't been worked out well at all.Satellites are interesting but why make me figure out when one has deorbited? Let me take the satellite view and mouse over to see how long each one has left, or click through satellites, like I can cities, to get the same information? They are too cheap to build later, so quest decisions that make them faster to build are pretty worthless. It's not at all clear why spies succeed or fail. It seems like a high level spy should succeed more often than not against a city with no counter-intelliegence agents. As in so many previous versions, spies seem like a random impact, not something that can be cultivated. That makes the civilization that specializes in spying not very interesting. The fact that individual units can't really become powerful takes away a level of interest that was present in prior versions. Maybe it didn't make sense, but I liked building my rocket battery up to an extra move and some real power. And I coveted those units. Units are relatively boring now; none have any character.I could go on about multiple points but the net is I think was released to make the Christmas season, not because it was ready. I've seen changes already (releasing stuff that's not ready isn't a killer because they can patch the games relatively painlessly now). So I think they're going to actually get the game working well over time. But it just wasn't ready. And they will be inflicting changes on loyal users that actually have a dramatic impact on game play.3Could be five stars, should be five stars.Okay so I gave it three stars instead of five but here's what I'm thinking...Cons: Mind you that I started on noob level but this game went by very quickly. It seemed almost rushed when it came to the tech tree which really becomes the backbone of the game. Once you reach the pinnacle of your tech tree, you can keep going (unlike Alpha Centauri) as far as learning other technologies. After a while, your cities look like hybrids of each type of ideology and I have to say... it looks really tacky.I think the relationship between factions is a little... off! I stayed neutral to all factions in my first game, was taunted a lot and then the AI factions that taunted me turned right around and said... "hey wanna trade" or "hey, let's be friends". I guess I felt like it lacked a lot of the fluidity that Civ 5 had. Also, the interaction/combat/take over of alien life forms seems rather limited as opposed to Sid Meier's older games called Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire. If those games were out right now for Windows 10, I'd still be playing them. Hmmm, maybe they are!Pros: Game play is smooth when it comes to moving. Excellent combat immersion with the native alien life and much of the same dynamics you see in other Civ games such as city growth, technologies, etc. The best part is that this is just the base game and the first expansion pack called "Rising Tide" just came out. If Sid holds true to his creation, then Beyond Earth will be an amazing game worthy of five stars.3Boring. This game has none of the thrill of ...Boring. This game has none of the thrill of the earlier Sid Meier's games such as Alpha Centauri, or even Civilization III. Plus STEAM makes it really hard to enjoy this game. Load it, and wait over an hour on a broadband connection to get it to load, update, and allow you to play. Plus under STEAM you really cannot own this game. The tech tree is scattered, and really gives you no idea what you SHOULD be researching at any time, so you just sort of shoot from the hip. The variables like Supremacy, Harmony and Purity really have no description of how you should be increasing these. Nor are there any hints on why these matter at all! It is almost as if the designers added these things as an after thought to show how cute or "elite" they were. Plus allies which were on really good terms just for no adequate reason attack even after you have spent turn after turn working on them to increase your friendliness. The espionage portion is really poorly done, in that you get your three spies and then that is all. I usually end up quitting 400 or so turns in just in sheer boredom. Also the game punishes you for expanding, by making it so you cannot stay ahead in energy. It seems to want you to have two cities and then that is all. Plus the worlds are extremely repetative and there is no real variation. Production of units is slow at best, and your health score seems to suffer as you expand over two cities.Don't waste your money on this game. Avoid STEAM at all costs.Edit on 10-31-15You never seem to win, the tech tree is strange, you never seem to get enough Purity, Harmony, or Supremacy or even know how to get these things. The other civilizations come in later, but always seem to win. Energy is a struggle, and unless you use your spies to steal it, end up without enough to run your civilization. The goals of winning always seem tilted to the AI, and despite attempting different strategies each time, you as the human player never seem to get enough of the points needed. Also do you build colonies and expand, or just leave it with one city? There is no rhyme or reason to this game. Without profanity, I cannot condemn this game enough. You would be a fool to purchase this unless you are in to masochism or work for 2k Games. Avoid it like the Black Death. Can I give it NEGATIVE STARS?01-02-15I tried it again, and added the expansion kit, and it was just as bad, not any changes, if anything it became more obscure, and I got tired of constantly losing no matter what civilization or strategy I tried. You never seem to get ahead of the other civilizations, the tech tree is even more confusing. The map is pretty, thats about it. Can I give this game a -5 stars? DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! It was so bad, that I deleted it, and STEAM off my computer. Steam and Firaxis should PAY ME, just for wasting hours of my life I will never get back!1I suspect most of us approach these games in pretty much the same wayNot worth $50. Frankly, I think I compares poorly with Civ V. The aliens can be difficult in the early stages, but are complete pushovers in the later stages. So, they are really just beefed up barbarians. The technology web certainly gives more options, but I'm not sure what that really accomplishes. I guess it would allow you to focus of different affinities for a slightly different gameplay experience, although I'me not sure how different it would really be. Yeah, you could develop different technologies, etc. But, I suspect most of us approach these games in pretty much the same way, i.e. we tend to be aggressive, or not, etc. Anyway, there are differences, technology web versus tree, this concept of affinities, and the whole alien skin. But, it really is just a tweaked version of Civ V, and I don't see it as an improvement, just different. Frankly, I'll probably go back to Civ V.There are actually a few problems with the interface. I didn't experience much in the way of technical problems. But, just a lot of little things. Like, it is difficult sometimes to understand the differences between the different units. The names keep changing as they are upgraded, like Civ V, but the names do not indicate what type of unit they are, as they did in Civ V. Some units are essentially infantry, some are armor, some are artillery, and some are combination art/arm, but until you memorize the oddball unit names (which change), you don't know which is which. To top it off, some are essentially amphibious, even floating over canyons, but there is no indication of that capability unless you go into the encyclopedia...2Needs to get more fixes, more "o.k." right now than the expected "fantastic"Not as good as I was hoping for. Main problems:- Still lots of bugs (e.g. trading, you have no control over how many units/how much gold to offer/ask, it is either what the engine suggests or no deal.- Worst thing is the forced stop after xxx rounds. There is the "one more round" button, but it is greyed out.- At forced end, no winner/loser. Just "Game over:. Pretty lame.- No ranking at game's end, no overview/comparison between you and others- Trade routes have to be renewed every xx rounds. Pretty annoying if you have many.- Unclear what each technology provides you (could be seen as a positive as it can be explored over many games)On the positive side- Nice graphics and audio- Real nice setup for technology net (not a tree any more)- Minor improvements for diplomacyWorth the $50? For me, not yet, but I am hopeful that they will fix the remaining problems and that it will be a long term fun game, just like the other Civ versions.2Mostly Good, Except The AIThis is another great title in Sid Meier's Civilization series. The graphics and animation are beautiful. The variety of planets and landscape is great. This game introduces a new, non-linear technology web, and it also introduces new concepts in diplomacy, affinity, and cultural synergies. The one glaring flaw I find is with the AI players. The good: each seems to have its own unique personality and affinities characteristics. The bad: the AI players often do not act in a rational or logical manner. As with other iterations of Civilization, the AI players can go from being your friend to being your enemy and declaring war in one turn, and with no warning.I've played through it several times, and the AI is not enough to make this a bad game, but it could use some improvement, in my opinion.4it useless to meI bought this game to play it off line when I am visiting my aunt because the area she lives in doesn't have internet access, this thing doesn't work without internet access and on top of that you need to download steam, why I have no idea, why would I want steam? it useless to me, it just a waste of space on my hard disk and unwanted, I have remove this game it was a waste of money, no where in the description did it said you needed steam to play this game, so disappointed.1
