Customer Reviews
No warning of short shelf-lifeI'm unhappy as apparently are a lot of other people because nowhere on the outside of the box or on the amazon webpage does it say this product has a short shelf life! I received it and put it aside thinking it would be fine for a while and of course now it is useless.
1Exploded in the box. When I received the box it was oozing the product. Now my porch is pink from it. The box was covered in the silicone. Very disappointed
1"OK" products immediately after use. But wait 3 months and you have garbage. Refunds not possible by this time.Mine red part (yellow container) is basically solid, its like super-gelatin. Less than 3 months old from time of opening them, stored indoors and closed tightly. It was used one time, about 1 ounce of each. Put in separate cups before mixing, separate stirring sticks were used before pouring into their respective cups prior to mixing. I open it again less than 3 months later because i now need to use a large portion of it for a job request, and have found it to be completely unusable at this point. IF you buy some, use it immediately or just do yourself a favor and stay clear of this stuff.I've had nothing but problems with Smooth-On products. Bought some XTC-3D which is basically re-marketed clear 2 part epoxy for double the price of buying it by its normal name, and it turns yellow within 2 weeks of indoor storage while my items awaited me to finish the ones further down the line. Its not surface browning either, as some epoxies do (you can just sand that off), this is all the way through. Its a dark transparent yellow/brown after starting clear. I thought i may have mixed it wrong so i did weight instead of volume this time, and have the same result. They will not refund items by the time this happens on both of the items i listed here. Don't do this to yourself, go elsewhere.
1SatisfiedI used this for a hawkgirl cowl I had sculpted and molded and I think it worked pretty well (not sure if this is the product you really use for this kind of thing) when you mix the 2 parts it comes out purple, the pink is just poor mixing on my part. The blue half, which I think is part B, came in chunky and thick so I was concerned about it working, but once I mixed it was fine. It did seem to cure faster than the 30 minutes that is advertised but overall I'm pretty happy with it. I was able to make this buying one set
5Very disappointed, i really love the mold i bought it ...Very disappointed, i really love the mold i bought it for, but after a couple months i tried to make another mold and part A was completely hard, so i ended up with more that half the product unusable. I was looking on the containers for shelf life but couldn't find it
1Okay product if you are making flat castingsIt's okay but it's not nearly as good as some of the other two part silicone rubbers out there. I use BITY (Brick In The Yard) Platsil 73-20 which is similar in consistency, slightly more expensive but infinitely superior in performance. My molds began to deteriorate very quickly after just a few uses of this product. This product would be good for a simple flat mold, it is not good for undercuts at all, it will tear apart.Conversely my other molds have given me hundreds of castings and still are going strong.
2"Expired" productI read a few reviews where others had their product arrive and the pink substance was either lumpy or nearly solid and they suggested purchasing this directly from the manufacturer.I chose to ignore those reviews and hoped that they were just an unlucky few. Sadly, my package was similar. I opened them this evening to make a mold and the pink was nearly solid (it actually broke the crafting stick I used to try and stir it).I guess I will just need to bite the bullet and pay the shipping charges the manufacturer has by buying directly from them, but at least I will be guaranteed a "fresh" product.
130 minute work time turned out to be 30 secondsI've used several brands for silicone molds but this was product has been the worst. I mixed it properly down to .001 grams between A and B in a 72 degree room with 4% humidity and it was solidifying within 30 seconds of mixing to the point it was unpourable and at 3 minutes it was solid in the cup. The photo was taken at 1 minute and as you can see it was almost solid and attached to the cup wall. Perhaps the shelf life was expired (no dates were on the packages) but I used it within the first week after receiving it and I've had poor experiences with other Smooth-On products (the XTC 3-D print coating was super thick) so I won't purchase any of their products again.
1Pros vs. ConsThis item is what gets the job done. Guys listen, when it comes to detail, look no further. Let me give you a rundown on the pros/cons on this.Pros- Simple.Cons- Messy.Pros- Equal measurement mixture; e.g. 3 oz.cup silicon + 3 oz. cup hardener + 6 oz. cup to mix in = 6 oz. cup of rubber mold.Cons- Pricey.Pros- Molds around every small detail, nothing can hide from it.Cons- Hardener is slower to pour.Pros- After mixing, (if portions are equal) you have roughly 3Hrs. to pour before it hardens. This gives you plenty of time.Cons- When mixing, air bubbles can and will get caught in it. It's unavoidable.Pros- Car resin (used for fiber glass body repairs) can be used for it, and not stick nor cause any damage to the mold itself.Cons- Unfortunately, some mold will have to go to waste, either by miss-measurement or by residue stuck in the cup mixture.I'd say the Pros won this fight. And the worst Con was the price.
5Plan about 5 weeks ahead of your project to order and see if liquid mold is good. The previous purchase I liked worked great. However this shipment I opened on 7/22/2017. Part A was cured in the bottle so couldn't use or mix with the hardener part B.SO order only month in advance so you have time to reorder a replacement. I got stuck not being able to make my molds, and tried silicone caulk to finish my molds. This didn't work as caulk cures very slowly, and sticks to the items you are trying to mold off of.SO I was out about $30 for this project; plus 7 dollars for silicone caulk, and the Time to float another option; and the time for cleaning up a very unworkable replacement for silicone molding rubber. To finish I have to save up another $30-$40 dollars. After 30 days you can't return product even if defective.
