Leaky Pens!I purchased these in December and just opened the package this week (March 2, 2017). I opened the first fine point to use and the nib looked like it had something on it, so I took a paper towel and cleaned it off. I attempted to write with it and it did not have any ink in it. Upon close inspection, all the ink had leaked into the lid of the pen. I got ink all over my hands and arm and a little on my Bible page. I was so disappointed and frustrated! I have not had any accidents since I began journaling and I hated that a faulty pen messed up my Bible page. I opened the other fine point and it was okay. I did use it to complete the page and liked the effect I got. I like the pens and expect to use them often; however, if I have any more episodes with ink getting on my page where it is not supposed to be, I will have to send them to the trash. If working properly, I love how the ink spreads and turns different colors when touched lightly with a water pen. This is a product that I think artists will find useful - if it does not LEAK!
3Nice but would would like a narrower tip! These work as well as one would expect. The felt tips are in perfect condition and they write smoothly. The package contains a 2mm tip (2), 2.5mm tip (1), and 3.0mm tip (1).The information I found most helpful in the instruction booklet was how to determine the appropriate height of letters based on the width of the tip.The suggestion is to use the full width of the tip to draw a total of five horizontal marks (staggered, from lower left to upper right - see picture). The total distance from the bottom to the top of the stack is equal to the letter height that tip is designed to produce. As it turns out, it would have been ideal to have a narrower tip (1.5mm) to perfectly complete the lettering on a certificate. I found myself wishing one of the two 2.0mm tips would have been 1.5mm instead.
4It bleeds pink and aqua when wet!In my opinion as a teacher, a felt tip is not the best choice for learning to hold a calligraphy pen perfectly so that the nib contacts the paper for an accurate thin/ thick stroke, because it is too forgiving. A corner will still make a mark. A steel nib is my preference for learning the basics. That said, the Elegant Writer is a handy tool for one who has basic skill down. They are lightweight and won't leak with travel. It's handy to have different sizes at your fingertips. I once had one with a notched nib that made a double line to dramatic effect. The dye based ink has a fun property in that it bleeds pink and aqua when wetted. My current purchase is for use in my watercolor class where we will exploit that characteristic.
5Great calligraphy markersI was hesitant to buy these because it seemed so many people had markers that came dried out. So I immediately checked each one out and so far so good. They work really well so I'm happy with this purchase.
5pen already dried out when receivedI opened my package only to find that one of the pens was completely destroyed and dried out. There are only 4 pens in this package and now I am left with three. I would definitely appreciate a discount as it is too much of a hassle to return it.
1Great set of calligraphy markersHow terrific to find a set of calligraphy markers, with differently sized nips. I'm re-starting the hobby of calligraphy, but do remember how helpful it is to have the option of different types of pens when you are working. A thin one is perfect for delicate embellishments. The thickest one can be great, if you are writing large letters or want to emphasize the first letter or words in a quote or saying. These markers are easy to work with.
5Fun, convenient, and functional... while it lasts. If you ever wanted to write calligraphy without messing with a fountain pen, this is a possible alternative. If you ever wanted to write calligraphy using a marker - this is it.It's convenient, lightweight, and creates beautiful script easily. Various widths allow you to give your scripts some layering, and they work just as well at angle if you want a fine edge instead of flat edge.Downsides:- Ink runs out quite soon- The print on the marker itself wears off quite easily (might be my sweaty palm, but still...)Overall it's a good purchase for fun and experimentation. Worth trying at least once.
4One was out of ink from the startOne was completely out of ink from the start - and other ones do not seem to have a lot of ink at first use - but decided not to bother sending back as hard to find calligraphy pens. Maybe it's just that I am not that used to such a fine line. We will see how long/well the other 3 work. It also doesn't note on package or pens how to store. Usually, they might say to store flat. Maybe these don't need to be - or maybe that's why the one was dry?? I will try storing flat and update if that works. Nice to find calligraphy pens and at such a good price, however.... That's why the 3 rating - so manufacturer will take notice hopefully. I would actually say 3 1/2 or even 4...
3I m in business!Updated review: I received a new packet. The tips are moist, ink is deep black and writing flow is smooth and consistent. Thank you Amazon.Unfortunately, the Speedball pens I received are dried out. Though I just purchased and received them, I found they were not eligible for return upon initiating a return/exchange. So I m stuck with them.
5Great price for calligraphy pens!Great to have a multi-pack of pens if you do a lot of hand lettering. Not as good as the calligraphy pens from Japan, but then you are not paying (as I have) $3.95 a pen. Seem dry when just out of the package, but did a few lines and circles to get the ink flowing and softened the felt tip. I don't like the mess of metal pen nibs or ink cartridges, so having a felt tip is great. You can have them at your desk or in your bag. Use the pen to write a quick note or birthday card, makes it look extra special. Also use for any kind of lettering you need for crafts. I will order these again!
