Customer Reviews

Great for heavy duty stitchingI bought the Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl to stitch heavy canvas pouches to the side on my hiking/camping/bushcrafting heavy canvas rucksack and I am very happy with the quality of the product. It is constructed very well, both materials and craftsmanship are better than expected - it's very robust and I don't foresee any issues with longevity. It is not a gimmick or toy, it is a very high quality and real useful tool. This is a must have if you plan to stitch heavy canvas, leather or any other heavy material - money worth spent. The Sewing Awl comes with 2 needles and 1 metal bobbin that is pre-spooled with 14 yards of heavy duty thread. The bobbin has a hole on side to gauge how much thread is left on the bobbin - a very thoughtful and detailed feature to have. The quality of the thread is also better than expected - it is very strong and well waxed. Most of the specs can be found online, but here are some I think are important to know: needle diameter = 2mm, needle working length = 42mm, thread diameter = 1mm, the thread is made of 4-strands of twisted and waxed polyester. The Sewing Awl is also very easy to use. I haven't loaded thread yet since the bobbin was pre-spooled but after going through the motion while threading the needle, it appears to be very easy to do so. The needles appear to be very strong as well.5I now have three of these, because when I can't find one, I buy anotherI have found the two that were missing, one after the other so now I have three. When I have a project that requires a leather or canvass stitching, I have to have this item. Cannot do without one. You should also consider buying a good leather punch, because driving through some material with just the force of your palm may not be enough for some material.I clearly believe in this item, because I bought two of them after I had used the first one and later mislaid it, then mislaid the second one.4Good "Bang for the Buck" and Made in AmericaI've had the speedy stitcher since May 2019. It took a short time to get used to it and I had seen several videos on this item. By short time, I mean one small project - knife sheath. Since then, I have have made or repaired many sheathes for multi-tools, knives, EDC (Altoid Tins), dog collars, belts, sandals, shoes, and a purse for my wife. This is definitely a good "bang for the buck."The white/waxed thread is very nice to use but leaves a residue that should be cleaned from the eye of the needle. I went through that very quickly and bought a spool that wasn't too waxy. The coolest part is that, since I have a handicap in one of my hands, the speedy stitcher can be used quite effectively with only one hand. Takes some creativity to figure this out and some practice but it is well worth the effort.5No Experience Stitching + Lack of Patience + Speedy Stitcher = Wow, I can actually repair itemsI have absolutely no experience sewing or stitching, and as far as I am concerned it is magic. However, I have canvas bags that we use to carry supplies for field work and they are expensive. I have riveted repairs before, but it isn't an ideal solution. After a 3-minute instructional video I was up and going. Even with my lack of patience, I was able to produce some secure repairs that I think will last a while.Because I don't plan to use it often, the small spool of thread will probably last me a while.Very pleased with this buy.5Find a kit with 3 needles though....This is great, we were able to fix our leather shoes. It can save you a lot of money. However, this kit comes with 2 needles, the #8 "big" needle in strait and curved. We quickly fixed the larger threading at the base of the shoes, but soon realized that we needed the thinner #4 needle (and thinner thread) for other parts of the shoes. We had to order just the #4 needle separate (hint: if you are in this situation, it is MUCH cheaper to get the one needle via an online auction service you may have heard of....). Some kits come with all 3 needles, I would suggest just paying a little more and getting that.As for the thread, you need waxed thread. I bought black waxed thread separately, in thick and thin. The thick light-tan tread that came with the speedy stitcher would not have worked on our black and brown shoes.Hope this helps!5Just what I needed !This item worked beautifully for me. I had a patio umbrella with very heavy material that looked like it was done. All the stitching on the 6 mounts were undone and my wife claimed we had to buy a new one. After looking at it, I decided it could be saved. I didn't want to spend another $300 on a new umbrella, and there was no guarantee I could get one that matched the patio set. My first attempt was with an upholstery needle, strong thread and a thimble. It sort of worked but was messy and very difficult to get the needle through the material. After we had a windy day, it failed and I was back to square one. So I saw the awl and figured I would give it a try. Well I have to say it was great. The awl allowed me to get the needle through the material easily and I was able to fix all 6 mounts. The item isn't perfect but it is terrific for the money. You have to tie off the ends when stitching is done, but no big deal. A small price to pay for getting the results. So I was able to fix the umbrella for a total cost of around $20 (this includes the needle and thimble I originally purchased). One tip, the directions aren't very good. so....go to youtube and search for the item and there is a few very easy helpful videos on how to use this. This was a lifesaver. I would not have been able to do this without the video. I am a 44 year old male with no experience sewing at all. By the time I was done with the umbrella I felt like a pro. BTW, it took about 1.5 hours to completely fix the umbrella.Pros: cheap, awl allows needle to be pushed through heavy material, comes with 2 needles and a spool of wax thread. Practice will allow a nice neat stitch.Cons: takes a little practice to get good clean stitch, directions aren't very good. not sure where i get more wax thread for this.4Brilliant, easy to use, sturdy stitcher.Received this through the post yesterday. I have started playing around with leather this year as a hobby making sheaths for my knife collection. But I needed something to make the stitching easier and after watching some you tube clips I decided to get this one. An excellent price that I cannot beat anywhere in South Africa. Brilliant delivery time and an excellent product. I stitched a leather holster for my stitcher for extra protection and jsut to try it out. What a pleasure! Easy to use, I really recommend this stitcher. i just wonder if you can use thicker thread that supplied with it. Anyone?5The be Awl to end AwlI needed to resew some belts, stitch some firehose, sew some leather. It's a manual process but I couldn't justify a several 100 dollar stitcher.I did most of the projects and misplaced the Speedy Stitcher. So I bought a competitors, that came with more needles and thread included.Big mistake. If you are going to be doing leather I suggest using a small drill to make the holes. But it's GREAT.5Sewing AwlI love this little stitcher. I ordered it to sew up a heavy duty vinyl cushion that is way too tough to sew with a regular needle. It's actually fun to sew with once you get the hang of it. You Tube videos were very helpful for operating instructions. I ordered 2 additional colors of the waxed thread that is made for it but I also ordered a small needle for it and used regular sewing thread which I waxed manually from a candle. Not exactly what it was intended to do but it worked ok.Four years later I'm still loving my Speedy Stitcher. But just the other day I cheated on her and bought a Tandy Sewing Awl. I admit my eyes wandered to the cute little exposed thread spool. What a beauty ! I was deceived ! Yes I could see when the thread was getting low alright but that was about all there is to it. Not really a necessity when it's so easy just to check my Speedy Stitcher's spool. The collet is of the finest craftsmanship and can be tightened with fingers only whereas the other sleezy model requires a wrench and pliers. I'm sorry for thinking I could have done any better. I'll send that other little seamstress with the exposed thread spool on her way. I can't wait to get back to my Speedy Stitcher (if she'll still have me).5This awl will fix most anythingThis awl has saved me more money than probably any other tool I have ever bought. I have fixed everything from our leather couch (3 times...) after our rescue dog found it irresistible to chew on, to a garment bag and a golf caddie which United airlines must have used for target practice, and numerous duffel bags, as well as leather sandals, boat shoes, belts, and it goes on and on. Easy to operate, once you get the stitching pattern down, and it lasts! Get a couple of spare bent needles with it, as they seem to break easier than the straight ones, especially when working on thicker leather. Really a working tool.5
