Customer Reviews

Flawless recording, great priceI sang in a Men and Boys choir as a youth under Jay Shisler. Wonderful experience. Thomas Tallis was always my favorite. I own a lot of English church music. Most of my discs have a muddy sound as they were recorded in large cathedrals. This set is very well recorded. I have already listened to it all the way through at my desk. My office set up has two powered klipsch speakers. With that setup, the voices were amazingly clear. The entire range of voices can be heard in wonderful balance. The performance is so good that the performers become transparent to the message. There are no technical errors in singing or recording. This set is yet another great bargain on Amazon. By making wonderful cultural achievements such as this recording available for a very low price, Amazon is truly providing a ministry of culture for needy ears.5Swimming in the glory of genius.Thomas Tallis was an English composer from the age of Shakespeare, and wrote extensively for choir. This mp3 set contains pretty much everything he ever wrote, and chalks up at just over 10 hours worth of sublime music. All of the choral music is in either Latin or English. There are also a few instrumental pieces included. Overall there is not much too complain about here, except one thing: repetition. The more you listen to this music, the more all of the pieces sound the same. But that is to be expected from music of this era. It's certainly not the fault of the composer (of whom very little is known). I think Tallis was an underrated genius, and this set is an inexpensive way to swim in the glory of that genius, even if the glory doesn't change much. It's great chill music (if you need that sort of thing in this way too hectic world), it's wonderful Christian Music (if you need that sort of thing in this way too hypocritical world), and it's only about $9 dollars (if you need that sort of thing in this way too expensive world). I think I can safely say that I need this music way too much!---------------Happy New Year!-------------PEACE4Will change your life!If it's still available, buy it. Invaluable tribute with the best of performances. If you like polyphony, this is as good as it gets. Spiritual, deep, gorgeous, other worldly. I put off buying but am so glad I made the move. Tallis lived through some of most dangerous times to be at the English court and he composed for Henry VIII (Reformation), Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary - counter Reformation) and Elizabeth I (who did not peer into men's souls). A survivor and a stupendous composer.5The bargain-basement price may have you wondering whether the performances can possibly be any good. But if you don't already kn10 disks of Tallis for a couple of dollars each? The bargain-basement price may have you wondering whether the performances can possibly be any good. But if you don't already know it, Brilliant Classics has made a business model out of providing insanely good value. For $25 or so, you get everything ever written by one of the greatest Renaissance composers, beautifully performed. Why are you reading this when you could be listening?5Much to commend in this Tallis collection! On a friend's recommendation, I investigated Tallis' music. It took me about 2 minutes to decide to buy this collection. I am extremely pleased with the Chorale pieces (a bit less so with the keyboard's attempt at harpsichord on instrumental versions) and the sheer number of pieces to be enjoyed at this price is also pleasing! I now recommend that others investigate his music. I will continue the exploration with other recordings and performers soon. For now, I am entirely satisfied.5I give this set a rating of 4 1/2 starsI have collected many recordings of the music of Tallis over the years. The quality of the singing and the recording process in this box set matches or exceeds the previous recordings in my collection. Of course, the great advantage to this set is that it is complete. My only reservation about the performances is that the sopranos overbalance the other voices at times on a few of the recordings.I am a bit disappointed that there is no booklet with the texts (though there is a CD ROM) of the music included.I would like to give the set a rating of 4 1/2 stars, but I have to choose 4 or 5, so I went with 5.5Just brilliant music, ethereal and It had some instrumental works ...Just brilliant music, ethereal and It had some instrumental works that I had not expected. High quality. I have other recordings of Tallis works, but this was a great comprehensive interpretation5THE archive of Tallis' music to ownThere are some feats of "complete" musical recording that performers/groups like to accomplish - The complete Beethoven and Mozart Piano sonatas, symphonies, and string quartets come to mind. Complete Bruckner and Mahler cycles are not as common. The "crown jewel" is the complete Bach cantatas (which has only been achieved by 3 or 4 groups). But only ONE group, the Chapelle du Roi has managed to record the complete (extant) catalog of the choral music music of Thomas Tallis. And what a MAGNIFICANT job they did at it. Originally released as a 10 or 11 CD set, this complete catalog of Talis' music is unparalleled. The purity of the voices and the superb digital recording (combined with the acoustics of the recording space) allow you to close yopur eyes and imagine yourself transported back to the 16th century in a chapel somewhere in Europe. This is music to sit back and immerse yourself in at night, after everyone else has gone to bed, perhaps with a snifter of fine brandy or a glass of sherry, and be transported to another time and another place - and perhaps catch a glimpse of Heaven along the way.5Great ValueThis collection literally offers several hours of tight choral arrangements. I have nearly everything ever pressed by the Tallis Scholars. This set of works is consistent with the artistic proficiency to which I have become accustomed.5HeavenlyAs a church choir member, I was familiar with one Tallis piece, "If you love me." I loved the piece, and I was interested in getting more of the music. I listened to some more on YouTube and knew that I wanted to own some of it.I looked on Amazon for the CDs, and I hesitated because the price of the CDs was not in the budget.I was really pleased that I stumbled upon the Digital version on Amazon. It was my first digital purchase (the delta cost from CD and digital made it worth my while to purchase it as a download.) It was significantly cheaper much to my delight.I couldn't be happier with the listening experience I have had with this music. It is heavenly.5
