Customer Reviews

Favorite opera CDThis voice is like a wonderful blast from the past - from the Golden Age of opera when tenors were not afraid to sing EXPRESSIVELY and with a wonderful, rapid vibrato that's hard to describe. I guess the word is "old-school" - but in the best, best possible way. I'm so glad I discovered this guy! He also seems like a genuinely nice guy in real life (i.e., not "tenorish"), which is always reassuring to learn.Beautiful voice, with great interpretation.Gems include:Je crois entendre encoreUna furtiva lagrimaSpirto gentilSon gi lontaniI also highly recommend, from his "Tenor Arias" album:Lucia di Lammermoor: "Tu che a Dio spiegasti l'ali"Anguish never sounded more beautiful! (yet real) - 'tis opera.5The Greatest Living TenorWords can't express the importance of this voice, which the Met should use for all the major tenor roles. Interesting and unique, with flawless top notes.5Return to the Golden Age . . . Calleja's The Real Deal!I'm listening to "The Golden Voice" with Joseph Calleja and, my goodness this guy has got "it" in spades. We're blessed with an abundance of lyric tenors of exquisite beauty these days, but I think Calleja may be my favorite of the current crop. While all of the arias on this album is beautifully performed, there is something about Romeo's "Ah! Leve-toi, soleil!" that sends me to the moon and when sung like Calleja does in this recital - it's simply breathtaking. His phrasing is intense - white hot - but never loses control of the line or his resources. He follows this up with one of the most amazing renditions of Des Grieux's dream aria that, except for the cleanness of the recorded sound, could easily be from an old cylinder recording. His mezzo di voce simply must be the best out there among major named tenors of our age.It is, in fact, his French singing that thrills me most of all. He launches into Offenbach's delightful "Au Mon Ida" (from "La Belle Helene") with delicious old-fashioned Gallic style. His ending of the first strophe of "Pourquoi me reveiller" must be heard to be believed - a diminuendo that dissapates almost into the ether - extraordinary control in a style almost all but lost.Calleja seems to have learned the nearly impossible style of voix mist and his "Je crois entendre encore" is - hands down - the finest version recorded since Bjoerling's. Yes, it's that good. Similarly his "Elle est princesse! The album goes on - covering 14 "old-fashioned" arias superbly sung and with an old world style. Calleja's voice - it's rapid vibrato, his mixing of registers, all harken back to legendary "Golden Age" style of singing and may be "strange" to some listeners used to the more generic "in your face" style of hit tenorism, but it is, hopefully, one that will grow on, thrill and earn him many more fans. The album is a joy and Calleja is "the real deal."5A Golden Voice IndeedThe title tells it all, he does have a golden voice. He reminds me of a young Pavarotti, but even more expressive.5This is our second Calleja CD and like the other oneThis is our second Calleja CD and like the other one, it is a winner! All three CDs came right on time and very well wrapped. No problems!5Truly GoldenIf you like bel canto music and singing, you really need this disc (OK, it's not all bel canto, but a lot of it is, and regardless, it is all beautiful singing). In my humble opinion, Calleja has the most beautiful tenor voice extant. With all due respect to Messrs. Florez (definitely the King of the High C's), Kaufmann, Vargas, Villazon, Costello(what a terrific Percy he was in the Met's recent Anna Bolena!), and whomever else you want to include, he is the king of the hill at present. This is a wonderful collection of music that's very easy on the ear, ranging from a chestnut like "Una furtiva lagrima" from L'Elisir, to the well well known like the meltingly beautiful "En fermant les yeux" from Manon, and "Ah, Leve-toi, soleil" from Romeo et Juliette, to the spectacularly beautiful duet, "Son geloso del zefiro errante" from Sonnambula (Anna Netrebko is a decided bonus here), to the unfamiliar but wonderful "Deserto in terra" from the rarely heard Don Sebastiano, re del Portugallo, Donizetti's final opera (504th in the Operabase database with a total of 4 productions worldwide over the last 5 seasons). Throughout this program he demonstrates the Italian concept of "sprezzatura" or effortless mastery, making the difficult sound easy. Though I prefer some selections over others in this program, there are no duds, and all are beautifully sung. If you appreciate a great tenor, here is the best you can currently get. You won't be disappointed!5The CDs come in a nice package. I enjoyed the musicThe CDs come in a nice package. I enjoyed the music. It is different from the three tenors but Joseph did a wonderful job!4A great tenorBrilliant. An incredibly beautiful voice. His voice has the sweetness of Gigli and the power of Caruso. I would like to see him perform5Five StarsHe has a golden voice - great album!5Wonderful recordingHis previous albums have been good, but this recording is an order of magnitude better. He sounds like Bjorling. He sings almost as well and his voice has that same melancholic quality.Really, the only recordings that come close to this are the Bjorling '55 Carnegie Hall and the beardless Pavarotti's Tenor Arias -- both of which cover most of the same music.http://www.amazon.com/Jussi-Bjorling-reDiscovered-Carnegie-Recital/dp/B004EWDGEC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1296851538&sr=1-2 (This recording has the encores including Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair). http://www.amazon.com/Luciano-Pavarotti-William-Puritani-Pasquale/dp/B000SNUI1K/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1296851372&sr=1-15
