    Soundtrack to the books, forget the movie.As an adult I read the books, which target a younger audience, and got this album partway through the first. Where the books were enjoyable but nothing particularly novel or skilled, this album is impressive as a companion piece and excellent enough to stand on its own. It captures the themes of the book wonderfully, the music is great, and this quite naturally became a sort of soundtrack to the book in my mind as I read the series.I saw the film adaptation of the first book shortly after reading the trilogy and buying this album, and frankly the movie was a big, bland disappointment. Where each track here has its own character, mood, and places in the books you could see it fitting, the movie's score was barely worthy of note. Most soundtracks (those with distinct songs that is, not the actual score for The Hunger Games' film) seem like a loosely related collection of songs, but this record feels coherent. Even the Kid Cudi piece, which while my least favorite and sort of an oddball on the album at least acts as a sort of voice for the career mentality. Months later I still find myself listening to this, and rather than reminding me of specific scenes from the books as an actual soundtrack might this just reminds me of the general tone of the world painted in my imagination by them. The books are gathering dust as forgotten entertainment, this is a prized part of a music collection.In a nutshell, I liked the books, was underwhelmed by the movie, but this album "inspired by" the film transcends both in terms of quality and longevity.5Great music inspired by the Hunger Games movie/seriesI read the reviews before I purchased this CD. It seemed like a lot of the poor reviews were written because people didn't like the type of music, or they suddenly realized that none of these songs were actually *in the movie*.First off, If they paid any attention at all to the movie, they would have already known that there were not any songs with words in the movie at all (except maybe when Katniss sang that Meadow Song). I don't know the director personally, but I would venture to guess he probably didn't want any songs in the movie because it would have been distracting and would have made the situations seem less *real* or in the moment. This movie was about Katniss and it was supposed to be us inside her thoughts as she went through all of the situations that she encountered after the Reaping.There is another CD that has the original movie score The Hunger Games: Original Motion Picture Score if they are looking for the actual background music used in the movie.This particular CD, however is a collection of songs inspired by the movie/book. Overall, I think they got it right. All the songs on this CD have this sort of haunting quality about them that is reflected in the storyline. Most of the songs are a type of folk music which makes sense, because I'm pretty sure the folks in District 12 aren't rocking out to Nicki Minaj or Justin Beiber while they are mining coal. The folk/country blend in the music reflects on the simple life that the district citizens lead. There are a couple of songs with more rock influences sprinkled throughout the CD which create that sort of rebellion feeling you get a few times in the movie and especially toward the end of the movie.Overall, I am very satisfied with this CD. I have never been a huge fan of folk-type music, but I really enjoyed the songs and I feel like they tie in nicely with the story that this CD is supposed to be telling.For those that were upset at the folk influences on this CD, all I can say is you have no one to blame but yourself. That's why Amazon has samples of all the songs you can listen to before you buy them :o)5Awesome cdim a total Hunger Games geek and i've been buying tons of HG stuff. Though i was looking for a cd that would have Rue's Lullaby on it, I bought this one because it has a lot of great music. I love how the songs relate so well to the book, especially Daughter's Lament. Most of the songs have a dark tone to it which some of my friends complain about but i believe it fits for the book and the movie. I listen to it everyday. I would recommend any HG fan to get it. The only thing im not sure about is what's the "limited deluxe" part. is it the cover? im not sure5If you're looking for Top 20 pop, look elsewhereWhile I wasn't a huge fan of the movie and the book, I did enjoy them for what they were. I feel the same about this album. I adore less than half of the songs on it; the others I just plain hate. I quite enjoy folk music, but a lot of these songs either didn't click with me or just didn't seem to fit in with the Hunger Games universe. The real stand-outs are "Abraham's Daughter", "Safe & Sound" (which I always see as an alternate song *SPOILER*Katniss would sing to Rue as she died*SPOILER*), "Daughter's Lament" (which sparked my interest in Carolina Chocolate Drops and brought me to their other fantastic music), "Kingdom Come", "Come Away to the Water" (the only Maroon 5 song I actually like), and "Run Daddy Run". The rest are either grating, uninspiring, or otherwise weak. I wanted to like them all, but after multiple listening I still can't bring myself to really enjoy everything. Although I had issues with the album as a whole, it's worth the buy just for the six songs I pointed out.2I TRIED to love it....really I did.When I heard Taylor Swift and the Civil Wars sing "Safe & Sound" I fell in LOVE with the song. And the video. I'll even sing along as I try not to choke up. It's the perfect song that embodies the whole feel of the Hunger Games, the reason why Katniss made the choices she made, and the overwhelming poverty and circumstances she came up against. Yes, I'm a fan of the Hunger Games. I'm 36 and I read all three books in one week. They are that good. Not ashamed. :)Now, maybe it was my expectations that wouldn't let me enjoy the other songs. Maybe they're just not that great. Either way, I don't really like this CD, EXCEPT that one song. I don't remember any other songs, and I have forced myself to listen to the CD a number of times. Expectations are a tricky thing. When you come out with such a powerful song for such a powerfully emotional series of books/movies, then I would want the rest of the songs to evoke some sort of emotion. It just fell flat for me. And I'm all about giving music/art/movies the benefit of the doubt. I generally take the attitude that all art has some message and value to it. But the best I could say about this album was that it just wasn't memorable for me. One exception aside.The great thing about that one song, other than being a fantastic and haunting song, is that it introduced me to one of my now-favorite bands, The Civil Wars. I could listen to Barton Hollow the whole way through anytime, any day. I love it. So, Taylor, you get a star. Civil Wars you definitely get a star. As for the rest of the album, you be the judge whether you're curious enough to purchase it. Lord knows I've purchased many an album because of loving one song in hopes of finding other hidden gems on there. And often, that system works out well. But I would suggest getting this one sale if you decide to go for it. :)2Not the soundtrack but still very goodFirst, let me clarify: this is NOT the soundtrack to the movie. Several reviewers thought they were buying the soundtrack and were disappointed when they didn't get it. Only three of these songs were actually in the movie over the ending credits ("Kingdom Come" by The Civil Wars, "Safe & Sound" by Taylor Swift and the Civil Wars, and "Abraham's Daughter" by Arcade Fire). The rest are "inspired by" songs produced by the T Bone Burnett, who was in charge of music for the film.With that said, this is still a very worthwhile CD to own, especially if you enjoyed the movie. These songs stand on their own though. I can't stop listening to it - I'm hooked. Apart from the 3 songs that made it to the movie, which are stellar, there are quite a few really solid songs here, such as "Eyes Open" by Taylor Swift. I even liked Kid Cudi's song, who I ordinarily don't care for.Even if I had never seen the movie, this album would still be worth every penny I paid for it. Knowing the movie and books makes it that much more worthwhile.5Better than the Motion Picture Sound TrackI liked this CD very much. I read the book and have not seen the movie yet so I am going on the songs alone. Most have a haunting almost Celtic quality that I find pleasing. My favorite songs are Come Away to the Water (Maroon 5) and Run Daddy Run (Miranda Lambert Feat Pistol Annies). I'm not sure why this is called the Hunger Games if the songs are not in the movie. When I read the synopsis, I understood it was not the original motion picture sound track but reflects the story and it did that for me, having only read the book. I also bought the original motion picture soundtrack and, though the CD is full of lovely songs, it was all instrumental. I prefer songs with words. So the bottom line is.... I am very thankful for this one. I like it a lot and in my humble opinion this one is the better CD of the two from the movie and well worth buying. Maybe that is why they made this one. For people like me.5Dynamic soundtrack for an exciting movieI bought this before I even saw the film. It was a cheap buy, $10 for the whole album, and I don't regret it at all!Popular artists give this album a star-studded quality to it, yet while each song is unique, they each seem to emanate a calm, independent-label feel, even the songs by Taylor Swift and Maroon 5, somewhat big names in the music industry currently.The album is relaxing and fits with the film's themes very well. For those who have read the books, certain songs reference "The Hunger Games" novel very well. "Just a Game" comes to mind immediately as sung from Katniss' perspective, making her an even more sympathetic character: "There comes you to keep me safe from harm/There comes you to take me in your arms/Is it just a game? I don't know."Overall this album has a track for music lovers of any genre, while also catering to lovers of the book series. Would highly recommend for any Hunger Games fan.5Songs aren't in movie but --So a complaint from some is that most of these songs aren't in the movie. I have to say, however, after listening to the tracks, a person can almost pick which scene the song would be put against. I can feel the tributes marching as they enter the palladium when Abraham's Daughter is playing. Was that rushing sound just by your ear a spear as Kid Cudi's track plays? I can easily envision Katniss walking in her district as The Carolina Chocolate Drops sing. And T-Bone Burnett is a master producer because Taylor Swift actually sounds like she can sing! Of course, gotta give a nod to The Civil Wars for their help in that. I do not care for Run Daddy Run. I am not fond of country music's tendency to have chipmunk/chipette like vocals. Hurts my ears. The surprises for me were Maroon 5 and Birdy. I loved Levine's voice and the song must have hit my latent Ozark genes. And Birdy, well, I just ordered this young woman's CD after listening to Just A Game. I haven't heard a singer connect so well with the music since Eva Cassidy sang about Fields of Gold.Say, maybe on the next soundtrack, they'll add in some Ray LaMontagne, Eva Cassidy, HEM or Lucinda Williams. Maybe Florence + The Machine.4Music to read byI am currently teaching The Hunger Games (Book 1) to my ninth and tenth grade students. Because a number of them do not have the funds to purchase the book, they are reading it in class. I bought the music for them to listen to while they are reading. When I began to play the music, requests began flooding from the room: "Play this song." "No, play this song." My students are enjoying it. And so am I. I listen to it while grading papers or just sitting at my computer. There are a number of really good songs on the CD. Anyone who likes the book or even the movie should enjoy this CD.5
