Customer Reviews

It's more like the Sims 1 and the Sims 2 adopted a ...Fans of the Sims 3, be warned: This is not the Sims 3. It's more like the Sims 1 and the Sims 2 adopted a child together. Which isn't to say that it's a bad game, but it's not difficult to tell that the game designers don't care at all what their loyal fanbase wants because they're too busy trying to make a game that's more appealing to a wider audience who don't own gaming computers. It's been stripped of so many of the elements that made it a deep and compelling game, and in exchange they give you the ability to determine exactly how big your character's thighs are. The gameplay is therefore clunky and not as satisfying as one might hope. Still, it's a game in the Sims series, so it's not all bad. The fact that you are always able to give your Sims new goals in life whenever they complete the last ones so that they're not just sitting around waiting to die is a nice feature, for example. It's fun to figure out the strategies of how to keep your Sims in perpetual bliss with the new emotion system making it more interesting. But I hope that you really, really like loading screens. And it's at least $40 overpriced.3A Severe DisappointmentI'd read the hype and I'd read the concerns. Nonetheless, I was really hoping to like this game. I didn't.The advice experts give concerning real estate often takes the form of "location, location, location". If I was in a position to give advice to Electronic Arts, it would take the form of "gameplay, gameplay, gameplay". Sadly, that's where this game fails to come through.By now, everyone familiar with franchise has heard of the missing swimming pools and toddlers. What I miss are the rich, exciting "worlds" as well as the free way in which one can move about them. I also miss the cemeteries. (I loved building catacombs and secret rooms below mine. I put bedrooms under a couple and a dance floor under one. Yes, I admit it--I watched too many Hammer movies when I was young!)Something else I miss from the Sims 3 is the way that the camera followed my Sim. This flaw was illustrated early when I sent one of my characters out to go jogging. Doing this often and trying to follow along by maneuvering the mouse will no doubt ultimately result in developing carpal tunnel. (EA--I really don't want to work that hard. Why did you think this would be fun?)Admittedly, the Create a Sim aspect has been improved. However, that's a small aspect of the game. It's sort of like having a great appetizer followed by a disappointing dinner. Another improvement, in my opinion, is the way one is transported quickly from one place to another. (In the Sims 3, though the ability to explore a town unhindered was great a lot of time was lost going between locations.) This change, however, calls into question why the developers spent so much time focusing on a Sim's walk? Again, it's the gameplay, it's the gameplay, it's the gameplay. Somehow, the priorities exhibited from EA just appear off.Another very frustrating aspect of the game is that one must login to Origin to play it. Here EA seems to be disrespecting those who've purchased the game by forcing how they play it. With the Sims 3, on the other hand, I just stick the disc in my computer and am off and running.I should bring this to a close. Summarizing, the improved Create a Sim is nice, as is the speed by which a Sim can more to a new location. After that, it's all downhill. From my perspective, disappointing aspects include (1) the extraordinarily dull venues of Willow Creek and Oasis Springs (especially after the rich, fun, unique and fully developed worlds of Sunset Valley, the decaying Twinbrook, Sunlit Tides, Starlight Shores, the exotic Roaring Heights and other venues from the Sims 3), (2) the inability to move freely throughout a venue and to suffer through loading screens, (3) the uninspired selection of careers, (4) the absence of cemeteries, (5) the cutaway walls in build mold which hinder decorating, (6) the limited ability to get close-up views of Sims and (7) the annoying dependence on using Origin. For these reasons, I'll just keep playing the Sims 3 for now. In a year or so, I'll check back in on the 4 and see if there's been any substantial improvements.1Sims 4PROS: I like the graphics and the look of the Sims. The scenery is beautiful. The homes are beautiful. I love the new roof styles.Customizing the Sims is fun. A great deal has already been said about creation so I won t add to that. There is a decent variety of clothing. Eventually you will find many of your Sims wearing similar clothes because you can pick out multiple outfits for them. As I like a certain look, it gets repeated often.Load times are quick. I m running it on a Windows 7 system and find the load times acceptable.CONS: It has been one glitch after another. I could care less about the loss of toddlers. They were the most difficult to care for anyway. I m happy they added pools. But what would make me really happy is not to have to go from one issue to the next. First it seemed that the game crashed constantly. I ve never had a Sims game crash this much. Move a Sim into a new home. Crash! Try to save a game. Crash! Try to exit to the neighborhood. Crash! Okay. Then that was fixed to a certain extent. Then I couldn t get it to shut down. That was fixed. Then Sims couldn t get food from the fridge without forgetting everything in their queue. Last week, I created a Sim using a Sim I d created previously in CAS. I changed his name, personality, eye color, hair color and hair style. Who knew that this would cause his alter ego (who was now an elder) to disappear altogether and be replaced by him? My new Sim was at once a new person and the old Sim. He was sort of in the old house with a grayed out picture and his wife was in love with him. And he was in the new home where he did not know anyone and was not married. And now I can t play at all. I click on a house and it acts like it s going to load only to put me back at the neighborhood screen. There are minor details that are so annoying. When Sims marry their last name doesn t change. And the person they marry doesn t move into the house. You have to go to the neighborhood screen to move them. (And probably initiating a crash.) Throwing parties is a chore since you have a specific set of goals to achieve to make the party a success. There are a limited number of lots and Maxis filled many of them with expensive homes your Sims won t be able to afford right away. I could go on with the issues 2 STARS: I skipped Sims 3 because I thought the Sims were ugly so I ve been looking forward to this game for a REALLY long time. As a fan that started playing with the original game, it pains me to say that this game sucks. I preordered Sims 4 a year in advance but if this latest glitch isn t addressed soon, I m going to uninstall and go back to Sims 2.2Dumbed-down disappointment destined for the bargain binI have been an avid simmer since Sims 1, and even dabbled in creating custom content. Sims 3 was such an improvement over Sims 2, which itself was a huge leap forward from Sims 1. So of course I had to get Sims 4, with great anticipation of the improvements. HAH! I'm now furious that I spent eighty bucks to preorder the Premium Edition Sims 4 and ended up with something akin to Sims 2 for console. It is literally more like an app game.Everything we loved about Sims 3 is gone! I remember in Sims 1 and 2, the hours wasted on custom content sites, downloading yet another recolor of a dress just so my new sim could have something different to wear. Sims 3 made any recolor possible, for clothing, furnishings, etc. A truly customizable world that sim fans wanted. Well forget that in Sims 4! Nope you will have a handful of color options to choose from for each clothing or furniture style, no color wheel or patterns to customize, and remember the lazy color-blind creators that worked at Sims 1 & 2, who gave us the mint green fridge that didn't quite match the dishwasher? Yep, those design nightmares have returned, so good luck finding things that actually go together! At least we had a dishwasher in Sims2 even if it didn't exactly match the other appliances. No dishwasher in S4, no cars, no laptop... What is the point in giving our sims outfit options (5 possible outfits can be created for each type, ie everyday, formal, etc.) that our sim will randomly choose to wear, when the choices are so limited? Even the hair and makeup that we used to be able to customize to any color, with highlights etc, nope you will have a handful of fake flat hair colors and preset makeups to use. I'm sorry but the removal of the colorwheel and pattern choices, absolutely no valid excuse is acceptable EA! OK so you can pull on the sim's body and shape it, that is cool, but you can't do it to the hair and those choices are ridiculously limited. Frankly I could use the Sims 3 create-a-sim sliders to create as unique of a look that I needed for my game. Then there is the personality dumbdown in Sims 4. No more favorite colors or foods, and the choices of traits are very lacking. Remember the fun of having an insane, neurotic sim who was afraid of the dark? All you get now is insane. Remember having the ability to make a custom life wish? Pick from a handful now. Ok, maybe I can forgive all that and just enjoy the game play. What the...? Where is the world? It is smaller than the original Sims 1 neighborhood! And you can't even go outside of your sims little area of about 6 lots without TRAVELLING -- remember that dreaded load screen wait in Sims 2 whenever your sim wanted to go visit a friend or the library? It's BAAAAAACK! Seriously? On my system it isn't the 'go make a sandwich and take out the trash' wait of Sims 2 load screens, but why remove the other best thing about Sims 3, the seamless open world?? And forget customizing the world, no world edit is available at all. There are so few empty lots, the new building options are really pointless because there is virtually no place to build anything. If this wasn't enough, I was shocked when my sim went to work, and I couldn't even click on her to view her simology or to see what was in her personal inventory. In Sims 4, 99% of the game has just been dumbed down to nothing. In game play, the few positives are that the sims can multitask, and you have more family relationship options. There are more social interactions, they take selfies (a lot!), they feel happy or sad, they walk funny if they have to go to the bathroom, in fact you can give your sim a swagger walk or whatever as part of create-a-sim. Little things here and there that are cool, but to me that isn't enough. These should have been in addition to, not instead of, the advancements made in Sims 3. So, like many no doubt, I'm going back to rich and open world of Sims 3, an infinitely better use of my free time than this pathetic excuse for a 2014 game. Too bad I can't get my money back though. I'm sure this title will be in the bargain bin by the holidays.2High Expectations, Low ResultsI have been playing The Sims since the very first game ever came out (2000) and I have always loved when they come out with brand new ones because they are always better than the next. Sims 2 was way better than Sims 1 and Sims 3 was way better than Sims 2, so I expected Sims 4 to be better than Sims 3.Unfortunately, I have not found it as so. I like to be a creative player when I play the sims, I like to edit the world I live in, create different styles of couches or sims clothing and what not. With the S4, there is a lack of that. I get it, it's a base game, but the S3 base game had way more than the S4, at least that's how I feel. Plus from what I heard the CAS (Create a Style) tool will never happen in S4. Sure we don't have pool (update: pools are now added) or toddlers, a set back, but we also don't have cars, I figured out why, no open world, that's a set back. At least the loading screens are shorter than S2 but there is so much more loading screens in S4, I never want my sims to go anywhere because of them. Even going to the neighbors, requires a loading screen, really?I love the Sims, but this was a let down for me, especially for someone who has been playing since the year 2000.The character development is much better and being able to have them have better emotions and being able to multi-task, great. But it seems all the creators have been talking about is these sims having the broad variety of emotions, that's great, it really does help with story telling... But that's not all the sims is, it's about creating the world you want, how you want it. Being able to explore without loading screens. Being able to go sim to sim in your family without them being grayed out (I really liked that freedom in S3) I really hope they turn it around, but every time I try to play the S4 I am continually let down every time.I don't expect the Sims 4 to be The Sims 3, I expect it to be better, have potential, but this is lack luster in my opinion. If you haven't yet gotten the game and are a Sim player like me, then don't get it or at least don't have high expectations.Pro:Multi-TaskingBetter GraphicsBetter EmotionsBetter tools in Creating a SimCons:Loading Screens (for everything)No Style ToolCan't Edit WorldsSmall (pathetic) worldsNo Cars, Toddlers or PoolsCan't switch between Sims if they are in different placesCan't go to Sims when at Work or School[This is what I can think of off the top of my head, but trust me there is more]2Not Worth $60, Definitely Not Worth $80I just uninstalled Sims 4 and packed it up to return. I'm giving it two stars instead of one because it's playable, and there are some fun features.I'm mainly returning it because it's not worth the price. I'd have been annoyed at paying $60, but this was absolutely not worth the $80 I paid for the Premium Edition. Some funny hats and whatever all else there was in DLC, plus the "hardcover book," wasn't worth the extra twenty in any way. I think EA has the idea that Sims fans will be happy to pay a premium over their already high prices to get anything *special*. Well, maybe some of us will :/ but the excitement wears off quickly. My main complaint about this game is that there are no paper playing instructions. At all. The single-fold pamphlet that comes with the game tells you how to install, warns about epilepsy, that sort of thing, but has no play instructions, not even a quick one-page guide to controls. There's no manual on either of the disks. No manual at all. The very thin hardcover book is basically a puff piece, a hardcover commercial full of colorful artwork that basically says "Look at all the pretty, cool things we did! Check out this concept art!" and that's it. It was interesting to look through once, but in no way replaces an actual manual. I prefer printed manuals, but even a PDF on one of the disks would've been better than nothing, and functionally much better than this pretty piece of uselessness. There's an in-game hint system that pops up little boxes explaining things as you start to play. Which is nice, but expecting us to remember every detail from all the hint boxes is ridiculous. And if you're about to click on something when a hint box pops up, the click dismisses the box, so you can't read what it said. Oops! Gee, wish I could've looked up whatever those hints had to say in a manual somewhere. While playing the game, my Sim wanted things I hadn't been told how to give her yet. Again, we need a manual where we can look these things up. Or at the very least, if the development team thinks this hint system is the be-all and end-all of learning the game, there should be a tutorial household where you start (remember the one from the original Sims? Which came with a manual?) where everything is controlled, and the player is never asked to do things they haven't been told how to do yet. As it is, playing was a long exercise in frustration and anger, punctuated with occasional short periods of "Hey, cool."Add in the fact that the first two times I quit the game it was because it crashed to desktop, despite the fact that my PC is significantly better than the game's minimum requirements. I've seen other reviews discussing how much more stable this game is than 3, but I'm not seeing it. Sims 3 behaves just fine for me, but 4 is the fragile one. How much worse will it be once there are a few expansion packs? After spending a dozen or so hours playing a few different Sims, I went back and played Sims 3 for a while, and remembered how much fun it was. A lot more fun than 4 -- and I only have a couple of the expansion packs for three, so yes, I think it's a fair comparison. So I uninstalled 4 and it's going back to Amazon tomorrow. They're happy to refund me, and shipping is less than $5 if we drop the package off at the UPS pick-up across the street. Good deal.In a few years, when I have a more powerful computer and Sims 4 is more reasonably priced and it has a few add-ons to add to the gameplay, I might try it again. For now, I'm going back to Sims 3.2Just meh...UPDATE: After playing for awhile now, and with the added updates and game pack, I'm really starting to see the potential with this game. No doubt they gave us a very bare base game, but I can see as they continue to build and improve upon it, I think it will begin to satisfy us die-hard S3 fans. It needs a ton more content and features, but they are on the right track to giving us something worth hours of non-stop playing. I can see they are setting us up for a ton of places to vacation and explore in the future. What seemed like a hopelessly dull game is slowly starting to come to life and really show us that we ain't seen nothin' yet.ORIGINAL REVIEW:I was excited for S4 to come out but also a little skeptical. The missing content and the obscene omission of something so basic (and beloved) as pools and toddlers made me wonder if it was worth it.After spending a couple of days playing, I'm pretty much done with everything there is to do, which isn't much. There was a lot of boasting from EA's PR team about "bunches of content" providing "hours of fun." Well, a couple hours maybe. To go from something as spectacular (albeit buggy) as S3 to something so basic and shallow was quite a let down. I miss the open world with a million possibilities for creativity. I liked being able to build up a school and watch my sims attend. Same with the work places, and stores, etc. All their outside lives you now deal with on the user interface. And once in a while something will pop up allowing you to choose how they react to something going on at work like in S2. The whole game feels all claustrophobic again with the loading screens everywhere. When you zoom out and tilt up to see the surroundings, the backdrop looks very fake and cartoony. Not at all real like S3. Major downgrade there.EA put a lot of emphasis on the sims emotions, because, well that's all there is. I feel like EA knew they were putting out a lame product so they told all their Sim Gurus to push the emotions angle. It's okay I guess. I don't feel like it adds a whole lot to the game honestly. Their emotions open up different things for the to do, but those things aren't all that amazing. Like, you can brighten someone's day if you're happy. Or practice pick up lines if you're feeling flirty. Some stuff I do like, however. Aspirations require you to do certain things to level up, which I'm sure reaps a reward when you reach the top. That adds that feeling of accomplishment much like reaching the top of your career. And I like the cupcake machine--but that's the only really cool and unique thing I've seen as far as house stuff.Graphics: the grass is a joke. Ugly cartoony joke. However the trees are really neat detailed. Bravo on that. The graphics for the houses and the sims themselves are amazing. I am really impressed with the lighting and texture detail. The mac & cheese looked so delicious I had to go make some in real life. When my sim took a picture of her food on her phone I laughed out loud. Now that's hilarious and a nice nod toward today's social media culture. With future EPs and DLC it's imperative they expand upon their careers. They are Dullsville when it comes to variety. I get it, it's the base game. But come on. Actually EA has a lot of work to do when it comes to variety in just about everything in this game. And because of this new engine they are using, lack of user creativity (no CAS or color wheel for example), and the closed world and all, it will NEVER live up to S3. Never.I'm trying to enjoy it for what it is but it's like I've been swimming in an Olympic sized pool these last few years and now I'm being asked to go play in the small plastic kiddie pool.Ideally what I wanted in this Sims product was an optimized, better performing version of S3. Basically S3 with the S4 graphics and the new fun features. The multi-tasking is really an awesome feature. From what I've seen I'm wondering if this will be a real failure for EA. They've gotten some much negativity for this, I'm wondering if they will even make it to future EPs before just giving up. It seems their whole PR campaign has been one big defensive damage control session. They knew we would be disappointed and yet they continued to insist we would have fun and be enthralled with the new emotions and the ability to die of laughter or embarrassment.Oh ha ha.Don't buy it yet. Wait and see if future EPs offer redemption for all the meh.Oh, and one more thing. WHY can't they ever make non-ugly, non-weird hair!!!!!3I don't care how good the graphics areEA/Maxis really messed this game up. I was expecting something that was a combination of what we've already experienced in this game, and what we got was a bare bones basic of less that The Sims 2. I don't care how good the graphics are...it's very very limited. Why they insist on making this game for older PC operating systems is ignorant at best. So many other games have surpassed them in graphics and High end required specs...so games can run better. This game is also full of bugs that they do not fix. I wish someone else like Colossal Order / Paradox would take over this game and make it what it should be. EA needs to go away and stop turning this game into a child's game with computerized barbie dolls.2Disappointment.I struggled so much between two or three stars for this but I just settled on two because that is truly what this game deserves. All in all though this game? EXTREME disappointment. NOT worth this price!I've put up with EA's crap for a long time but now I just will not forgive them for ruining my favorite PC game franchise for years! Four generations of sims games and with the fourth generation this is what they deliver us for the base game...seriously? It started it beautifully with Sims 1, Sims 2 was spectacular, Sims 3 was okay but was still good! And now...this. It is so terrible I am returning it though I still have it installed on my machine. The game has potential but it is so watered down and vanilla I got bored playing it just after a couple days...a couple days that is ridiculous. With the previous games it took me months of playing just the base game alone before I felt like I wanted something new added. The main issue is how basic and minimal the features are. There is not much to do besides look at the different emotions your sims have and watch them multi-task. That is basically it and all there is. They've thrown out the open world Sims 3 was famous for and have now a mixture of loading screen locations and a basic and small looking world with not many locations to go to in the first place. The sims look very cartoonish - which is something I will overlook however the amount of content and gameplay available? No that is something I will certainly overlook. Besides the graphics not being great, it is just missing a lot of core content that the other previous generations would have in their base games. For example how much would it have hurt them to let us have pools? And toddlers? And even -gasp- dishwashers! Its ridiculous. I believe they purposely tried to give us as little as possible but charge us as high as they possibly could for a barely vanilla game - I mean this could barely even be called a Sims game. If they think I will stand for that and wait for their DLC and expensive EPs then they are wrong, I'm getting my money back. Perhaps later on when more EPs and improvements come out I will bother buying the game again but for now this is just not acceptable and I'm seriously sick of EA pulling this kind of crap on the fans. I believe this time they have gone too far. What I think this game is really worth? $30 at most, seriously for the content that is offered in it. The only good thing I can site besides the emotions (though those aren't too great anyway) and the multi-tasking is the CAS system which takes some getting used to at first and the clothing options and hair options however that doesn't really matter since they got rid of the wonderful Create a Style system that the Sims 3 had brought to the franchise as well. I don't even care about build mode since I'm not into building however those are not enough to make up for how basic and watered down the game is overall. And overall this is a terrible start to a new generation of the franchise and I still can't believe they actually did this and it leaves me little hope for future EPs and how much content will actually be delivered in them. As someone who has been a fan of the series since the original Sims 1 I am just lamenting right now at what it has all become. THANKS EA. Not.Anyway please follow my advice and save your money. Get it until later when the price drops down to a proper value and do not waste your time.2As Expected...This was maybe more of a 2 1/2 stars for me. It wasn't as terrible as I expected from reading first-week reviews, but even after waiting a couple months until the price dropped, it was still pretty disappointing. Other reviews have stated all the pros and cons extremely in-depth, so there's no point in repeating what's already been said. In short, I purchased this half-off during a Black Friday sale, and that was still more money than it was worth. The extras aren't worth anything. If you want to buy the game to complete your collection (like I did), get the basic version and absolutely do not pay more than $20 for it.I played for a few hours when I finally got it, but haven't touched it since. It was a great concept, but ended up getting really dumbed down until it would appeal to a rather different type of gamer than previous generations of Sims games (just my opinion, obviously, but it's more or less a point-and-click game now, and if I wanted that I'd find something free on my phone rather than paying $80 - or even $20 - for it). Sims 3, to me, is a sandbox game. I don't need objectives. I just want to build stuff and play god with my Sims' lives, thanks. If EA had focused on keeping the same gaming concept while expanding gameplay and improving graphics, this would've been an A+ for me. I'd have happily waited another two years for them to do that.) Even taking into account that the basic game usually leaves something to be desired after you've been playing with expansions, this was a step backwards in the franchise. (And one final disgruntled grouchy moment from someone who owns literally every expansion and stuff back from Sims 1, 2, and 3: I have no intentions of purchasing any of the expansions for Sims 4 because what's the point? I have a complete Sims 3 collection; I'll stick with that.)2
