Customer Reviews

Probably His Best Yet, Including His dcTalk DaysBought the entire album on MP3, and my whole family has been enjoying it ever since - TobyMac's latest is more pop than hiphop, but no complaints here at ALL. Shades of Alabama Shakes, Moby, Bruno Mars, Pharrell, etc, float in and out, while still being authentically all TobyMac (As he's been around longer, who knows but that he's influenced more than been influenced by at this point!). I can't think of even one song on here that isn't worth buying on it's own. Mostly high energy stuff, great to dancing to, working out, or cleaning your house! Ha! But also some slower, melodic grooves that still palpably move the soul. LURVE it. Match, Keep Walkin', Feel It, Love Broke Through. Backseat Driver, Love Feels Like.... just so much ear-candy deliciousness. BUY it!5A Potent Mix of Class TobyMac Sound with More Than a Hint of Aggressive New DirectionsTobyMac has been around for a very long time and I'm not sure how many new fans he can win at this point in his career but I'm impressed that he continues to refuse to rest on his musical laurels and once again brings a fresh take on the TobyMac sound we've all grown to love and expect.Any true TobyMac fan will tell you that, lyrically, his songs will continue to grow and resonate with you more the more you listen to them and contemplate his meanings so it's difficult to pass judgment after only a few listens to an album that just came out. At first blush, honestly, it seems that the lyrics aren't as deep as we've seen Toby go in some of his past offerings. I feel that's probably deceiving however. Simply constructed lyrics, as many of the lyrics here are, doesn't necessarily equate to simply meanings. While songs like "Love Broke Thru" and "Undeniable" may not have the clever rap constructions we've seen from Toby in the past, the simple honesty of the truth in the words themselves are beautiful and quite lyrical in their own right. What TobyMac is a genius at above all else is producing. He knows how to put together brilliantly produced songs that hook you from the first listen and then continue to draw you in as you notice the little subtle background sounds and nuances he's built into each song. In that respect, *** THIS IS NOT A TEST *** is absolutely classic TobyMac. There's a clear six to eight songs that stand out as "catchy" on first listen which is just an absurd number of songs to hook a first time listener of an album. By the second listen I found myself singing along with songs such as "Like A Match," "Lights Shine Bright," "Move (Keep Walkin')," "Fall," and of course the songs that were released early ("Beyond Me," "Backseat Driver," "Feel It"). For me, "Till The Day I Die" is a standout due largely to the more aggressive sound and the impressive guest rap by NF which includes some great lyrics. There's no way to talk about this album without mentioning "Love Feels Like" which features dc Talk band mates Michael Tait (currently with Newsboys) and Kevin Max. Those of us who have been around long enough to remember what love for dc Talk felt like might remember that back in the day dc Talk was on the very cutting edge of not only Christian music but, some would argue, music in general. Each album they released seemed to have a new sound different from their previous sound but somehow on the cusp of what the music industry was just beginning to explore. An album of songs along the lines of "Love Feels Like" could easily have been a continuation of that cutting edge sound exploration for dc Talk. Had this song anchored a dc Talk comeback album I think the industry would have taken notice. I'm not sure if TobyMac will gain the same sort of notice but what "Love Feels Like" could have done for a new dc Talk sound does, in many ways, for a new TobyMac sound instead. Don't get me wrong, much of what you find on *** THIS IS NOT A TEST *** will be familiar to you if you are a longtime TobyMac fan. But there's also a fresh sound and a new perspective embedded in many of the songs that is clearly paving the way for Toby to drive his artistry in a new direction if he should choose to do so in future albums. It's an exciting prospect that we should all look forward to. In the meantime, enjoy a potent mix of classic TobyMac sound with more than a hint of aggressive new directions on *** THIS IS NOT A TEST ***. You won't be disappointed.5Beyond my expectations! This album went beyond my expectations. It had very meaningful and catchy lyrics in each song. I thought this album was more Christ centered overall than other albums. To prove it...I'll do a review and my thoughts on each song.1. Like a Match - Great song to start off an album. You need a match to get the fire burning! How your love shows through you will be the proof of how much you are burning for Christ. "If it's real, we gotta show it/ oh oh oh oh Cause if it's not, they sure gonna know it". Point I make of this song is if your fake people are gonna know it by how we act. Great start..to setup the album.2. Backstreet Driver - This sounds something out of mainstream. A very catchy song. Also he adds some rapping in the middle with (Tru Dog) and a great hook at the end that gets to the point with to an already great song, ' It's a whole new journey, a brand new path''....Basically the song have the same meanings of Carrie Underwood's " Jesus take the wheel". This song is a lot of fun, and the lyrics go very smoothly together. "Light it up Lord, just like You do/ No second guessin', Imma move with You ".3. This is not a Test - This is one of those adrenaline pumping songs! I'm not sure I totally agree with the theology of this song. However, very catchy again and great to listen to and the background bass sound is great to pump up. This song basically points out to give everything you got and make each second count. A great song to get you focused on whatever something you need to do that needs to get done. After all, you might not have a second chance with certain things in life. So do it now and do it with all you got!4. Light shines Bright - This is a good break in the fast paced songs. A slower paced song, ( sung by Hollyn), she sounds really great. It's easy to listen to. This song is basically about illuminating the light of Jesus Christ and when we all come together to make the world a little brighter. At least that's what came to my mind when I heard this song. Also a good hook near the ending...Yo, that smile might be joy that s connected to the spirit/ The spirit might be contagious if you dare, you dare come near it I remember, can t forget, peace that you can t second guess /Sparkle as the light reflects we writin pay it forward checks." The only thing I can see that could be wrong with this song is the main chorus is repeated a bit too much, and could be annoying to some people. A great uplifting song in this darkening world, that need to see the light!5. Till the day I Die - This is my second favorite song on this album. I love the lyrics, the meaning, the drive and the sound of this song. This song is all about being fully committed to Christ. " For the rest of my days I'll lay it all on the line Til the day I die ". I love the passion in this song and I love the way the song starts out. It also has a little hook about saying not to use God as a crutch. This song is not just thought provoking, but passion driven.! It makes the listener (as myself) question my loyalty and am I being fully committed and devoted to Jesus and glorifying him in my everyday life. This song is one of my favorites! It also puts in perspective to be a true Christian, means you got to have him just not in your head, but your heart! " It's Your name I'll glorify". "It's in my heart It's on my lips". Awesome song!6. Feel it - This is one of those fun dance songs. So what's it about? It's about mostly about the " Holy Spirit " and gives hints of this in the song. "Well, you can't see the wind, but it moves the leaves,From the bottom to the top of the tallest trees". Some times the " Holy spirit" moves you to do things outside your comfort zone. Let it move you, and hold nothing back. This is a fun song and I believe Christians need to have more fun, and sometimes just let go and let the joy of Christ overflow. This song also has some great meaning...that Jesus heals our brokenness inside and see's us from the inside as beautiful. Wow..what a moving song..and can't figure out why this song isn't on mainstream radio stations. The video is awesome as well!7. Move - This is a song about someone who may be discouraged, and found the courage to be encouraged. Sometimes when things go wrong, you have to just keep moving and new opportunities arise. Great uplifting song for anybody who is discouraged.especially where depression is rampant n our society..When your heart is broken from anything...breakups, disease, loss of job...have the courage to keep moving.and go to Jesus.. "Well, lift your head, it ain t over yet"/ " The Lord ain't finished yet". Sometimes God uses things in our life to encourage others. remember we are in a battle beteen good and evil and we have to have the mindset of a soldier.8.Love broke through - This is by far my favorite Toby Mac song of all time. The song is great sounding, great lyrics and on a personal level very meaningful song to me. Thank you, Toby Mac. I always seem to find God when I'm not expecting it, and it usually happens when I'm in nature. This song blew me away. Basically it talks about God seeking us. I love everything about this song! " When love broke thru,You found me in the darkness Wanderin thru the desert/ I was a hopeless fool/ Now I m hopelessly devoted/ My chains are broken ". Great song and a strong Christian song and my personal favorite!9. Beyond Me...This song is about that some things in life just can't be explained. We can't comprehend God, well because he's God. I think sometimes we make God too small, and forget sometimes that he made this world and beyond. I enjoy the sound of this song, but not my favorite lyrically. It does get to the point though...that the world and beyond is so huge, and Jesus still loves us personally.10. Love feel like ( w/Newsboys) -Glad to hear this song...basically a reunion of..DC 'Talk. A very passionate song, but definitely different style of song in the album. This song is a fighting song...and basically a call for love as being the highest call. The point is I believe is Love endures only when it is lived out and it's calling people to get out there and stand up for Love and knowing that we can always do more. Great song, sung with conviction and passion.11. Undeniable - This is a great ending theme. No matter what, it's undeniable that God exists..I enjoyed the chorus at the end with the children.Overall a great song of those who doubt. "Your work doesn t stop with me /Your signature s on everything we see ". Love the lyrics!Overall: I believe this is the best album in the last decade to be honest! I can also see its appeal to mainstream music...very 2015. Great meaningful lyrics and hooks, great sound, a lot more Jesus based songs than other Toby Mac albums, and very passionate and uplifting!5Another typical TobyMac album.....And that's a good thing!Somewhat a stylistic nod back to "Diverse City" which is a good thing as that still happens to be my favorite T-mac album, yet it still sounds current. Thankfully, this is not another EDM album like "Eye On It" except for the title track featuring Capital Kings. I love funk rock, so my favorite track happens to be "Feel It", the only track on this album that I keep repeating. Perhaps Bruno Mars was an influence? Anyway, this album features another DCTalk reunion on the track "Love Feels Like" which makes me wish I could have actually heard more of Kevin and Michaels vocals on this one. This album is full of honest, fun, uplifting, and witty songs that TobyMac has been known for since his days with DCTalk. While I don't consider this to be his best album, it is definitely a step in the right direction from "Eye On It" and also another great album from probably my favorite CCM pop artist.4Good message. Poor mastering. Why the Christian community seems intent on engaging in the "loudness war" is beyond me. Like MANY of the titles I've purchased, the message is good, but the sound quality is damaged by mastering that pushes the levels into clipping distortion and makes the sound harsh and crushed. As a sound technician using AI-based reprocessing equipment, - I can repair a lot of the damage - but this also lets me see how badly the recording is damaged as the processing occurs. I am appalled the Christian artists accept that form of destruction. It's extremely sloppy and unprofessional.3TobyMac delivers a winnerLet me start by saying that this was the first TobyMac CD I ever listened from start to finish. This album starts off with great beats and keeps on going throughout. The production is top notch as well as the songs. Catchy beats, smart lyrics, and lots of guest artists help shape this album into one of the best in the Christian market. It doesn't have that "samey" feel that many Christian artists put out. Standout tracks include Backseat Driver, This is Not a Test, Light Shine Bright, Till the Day I Die, Love Broke Through. This is one album that you can enjoy all the way through.5Mainstream sound without the bad stuff!I heard Toby Mac's "Feel It" as I was switching stations about 3 months ago. As a rap/hip hop/funk fan, I was happy to finally find a song with a positive message that I could "jam" to with my kids. Today I mentioned to my daughter that I think this is the 1st CD I've purchased in 20 years that I love EVERY SONG on the album!! (So she told me I should post this) My kids ask me to put on Toby every time we get in the car. I would definitely recommend this CD to everyone that loves fun/funky/uplifting/dynamic music but is put off by all the inappropriate content in mainstream music. Toby Mac is an AMAZINGLY TALENTED artist! We are fans for life!!5DC Talk comes together for one songAlways love TobyMac. I've always identified most with hip/hop and I liked him best in DC Talk. I have all his albums and all his albums before it was just him. He's an amazing artist and I always preorder his newest album because he is one of the few artists who always blows me away. And I don't say "always" lightly. This album was just okay. I find it hard to say that, but it didn't have the depth that the rest of his work has had. The sound is amazing, as usual, but the words, the depth, it's not quite there. My favorite songs, for the depth quality, are "Beyond Me" and "Loves Feels Like". Other songs are very catchy, in fact, most of them are really catchy. And they all glorify God. But they sound like any other Christian song. These two are standouts. I know he is a very busy man, both professionally and as a family man. Not every album can be a grandslam, as I've come to expect from him, and this time, this ONE time, it's just a triple for me. But worth having. And I can't pass up a catchy tune with a great message anyway.4Turn it up!! TobyMac's new album is great! If your a TobyMac fan, you will not be let down with this album. If you do not know TobyMac, his music is Electric Pop/Dance. He has been doing solo albums for years. Before that he was a member of DC Talk (One of the greats in Christian music). I am really digging this TobyMac Album. Toby's Lyrics and style has really grown. I am not into many Glory and Praise style bands, . So with TobyMac's This Is Not A Test, he does it in a awesome way were it's mixed in a love song or a coming of age song. He finds the perfect blend of Glory and Praise with daily life or activities. At first listen you might miss the references in some songs, but as you listen, they are very deep and you start hearing the true meaning in his songs. Very well done. So it is not "Churchy" as my non christian friends call it. I played this in the car and they liked it. Watch the video for Backseat Driver, to get an Idea of how his music is. Backstreet Driver is a good song, kinda fun, but I like several songs better. Like the Title song This Is Not A Test, good beat and fast pace. Beyond ME (Phenomenon Remix) Its got a good Club beat. Feel It, reminds me of a Robin Thick song, but better. One of my Favs is Move (Keep ON Walkin').I like the rock style of RED or Thousand Foot Krutch, But TobyMac has that ability to draw anyone in... Careful or you might become a fan too!5Ya Cant Listen To this Sitting Down..I thought another album? I'll check it out.Next thing you know I'm like, "yes another one"!According to Til the Day I Die, that's how it will be and if Tmac continues to dish out music like this, then that is a good thing. All my 30 year old peeps, who "freaked" out on Love Feels Like? I did, they still got and yes I'm one of those that says they need one more album, heck even the kids know.Feel old yet? JkLight Shine Bright got me chillin', This is Not a Test got me illin', or straight up hyped.Remixes and bonuses always a plus, Lift You Up is definitely a repeat.Hip hop has and will always resonate with Toby Mac, and that just makes me smile from ear to ear.And aaay shout out to Capitol Kings, too turnt.5
