Customer Reviews

A good pipeI've going through Kratts at a rate of about 1 every couple of years, so I thought I would try a Tombo this time. Overall I like it, but there are some noticeable differences:1) It's E-E ... not a big deal, but I've been using F-F for almost 20 years, so when we sing a song in F my only option is the low tone2) It's counter-clockwise ... again, not a huge deal, but I need to get used to spinning it the other way3) The letters are small enough that they are difficult for me to read, and I've heard that the writing on the label tend to wear off on Tombos. The Barbershop Harmony Society makes a label that supposedly solved both problems, but until I get one of those I used white tape and a sharpie ;-)After about two months, I'm happy with it. Now we'll see how long it lasts.4Nice clear soundI like this little pitch pipe. It has a convenient carrying pouch and I keep it in my purse. It's a nice, clean clear sound with enough volume to hear it easily in a noisy room. I wish they had made the letters a little larger and easier to read. I had to draw on it with a marker to help me see the notes. But with that fix, it's great.5Note labelling issueIt works fine, but the labelling kind of throws me off sometimes. [C - C#/Db - D - Eb - E - F - F# - G - Ab - A - Bb - B] is the kind of labelling most musicians would find more useful than the one that s used in this product: [C - C# - D - D# - E - F - F# -G - G# - A - A# - B].4Excellent soundNeeded pitch pipe for small project I am working on. This unit is excellent. The keys are well highlighted, easy to read, and the sound is very clear and loud. Exactly what I need. The unit comes with a small cloth bag in which to carry it. Very nice. The unit was mailed and delivered very quickly within 2 days. Great experience. Highly recommended.5Tombo better than KrattAfter purchasing several of the Kratt F-F pitch pipes, the C and C# pitches went flat at least 1/2 step. Someone suggested that I try the Tombo pitch pipe which is E to E. I checked the pitches and found that they were within 10-15 cents of the actual pitch. Also the tones produced were louder than what could be produced on the Kratt. This was a great improvement as it makes it easier to hear across the risers for our chorus. The two drawback are that the notes are listed as sharps instead of flats. I.E. A# instead of Bb. When you hold the pitch pipe with the note markings toward you, the letters are upside down for the pitch you wish to blow.Pros: The tone quality and accuracy are very good.Cons: note labels upside down, pitches shown in naturals and sharps instead of naturals and flats.Suggested improvements: Have the notes engraved on the pitch pipe. Labels eventually wear.4Good luck reading the pitches in concert! The tone is fine. The raised blowholes are great. The PRINT showing which pitches are which on the pitch pipe is INSANELY SMALL and unnecessarily complex. If you plan to use this in concert, and you don't want to stand there staring at your pitch pipe for 20 seconds, you'd better figure out how to REPRINT the note names in a simpler and much larger format. I've used silver sharpie. Sadly, it rubs off the smooth plastic easily and needs to be reapplied every 2-3 gigs. I'm forced to try some other product. Tragic, since it would be so easy for the manufacturer to correct this!3Quality itemI was reluctant to pay a few dollars more for the Tombo pipe, but after years of having pipes in which the most used notes would lose pitch (Bb = A on one of them) I took the advice of a friend and got this. Good move. After two years of fairly heavy use the pitch is still right on. The separate protrusions for each note make it easy to avoid blowing two notes (unless you want to). You can blow loud or soft notes. My only (minor) gripe is that the lettering only gives notes in sharps. If you want an Eb you need to blow a D#. It didn't take too long to get used to that. If it really bothers you, the Barbershop Harmony Society sells a paste on disk with the combined flat/sharp markings.5fails in a pinchFirst, the pros. Each "blowhole" is raised, unlike a harmonica, so it easy to blow in the dark. The letters are in larger print than the Farley's I was using. The overwhelming negative is that the two lowest notes completely fail about half the time, giving only a squeak and a quaver. I have tried blowing softly, blowing hard, warming it my hands first, nothing makes it dependable. Serviceable for at-home practice, but completely unsatisfactory if you are the designated pitcher in a performance. I will keep it as a backup rather than try to get my money back, but I would never get it again.1Not sure just yetCan t really respond just yet. My friend used to sing with The Sweet Adelaines and she teaching me how to sing. I have trouble finding my key, so she suggested a pitch pipe. Katie and I play cards every Wednesday (tomorrow!), so it will get its first trial. I always liked to sing to throw her off her card game, this may change things. We shall see.5These pitch pipes are great. You need to be somewhat consistent in how ...Bought this for my quartet. These pitch pipes are great. You need to be somewhat consistent in how you blow it, otherwise the pitch can migrate as you blow. Too little pressure not good, too much not good, needs to be just right. But if you do that this pitch pipe makes a nice sound.4
