Game Changer!Let me start by saying that this is a total game changer. In terms of gaming experience evolution, this one really elevates the experience for me. I think it's hard to put into words the way it changes game play without really trying it out. And I feel this would be more of a step up than a better joystick, or pedals etc.My use for it is mainly in flightsims, and in particular combat flightsims, so prior to this I was using the joystick hat to look around. Fairly common so I didn't see the issue.Once installed, setup and loaded in game, I was blown away. Below are the pros and consPros:-Frees up your hands, to the point where sometimes I don't know what to do with them-Give you more 'thinking time', taking away a big task from your hands (hat pan and zoom)-Once configured to your liking (I used Gerry Abbott and RalfiDude's tips on youtube), allows pin point precision around the cockpit-Pretty easy learning curve from unboxing to use-Simple setup, no batteries, no weird receivers, just a clip and a small cameraCons:-Can take a while to setup to your liking (read above what I used to find a quick setup)-Clip can be annoying if you are not used to wearing a hat-Camera can be affected by light sources (even with light threshold modified, i.e. curtains are needed for me during the day with a window right behind me)That's pretty much it, nothing 'really' bad about it. I think for the small investment, I would recommend this as one of the FIRST purchases to any gamer/simmer etc. It will really change your way of gaming.Could not recommend it enough, 5 out of 5!5this thing is awesome. Why did I wait so long to get ...WOW, this thing is awesome. Why did I wait so long to get one?!?I have been playing Elite Dangerous for years and have always had my eye on one of these. I went cheap and got some gadget online that went on the top of my headphones...it was a disaster, and had a clumsy wire to deal with. So, I started over and researched the TrackIr again via some YouTube videos. One guy said that if you have not played Elite without one of these...stop what you are doing, and get one immediately. So, I did. HOLY COW, this thing is awesome. Setup was a breeze, and there was no setup in Elite whatsoever in regards to keybindings, etc.... It just works. I found a Elite profile online (on the Frontier forums).I decided against the pro (led light add-on), as I typically game with just a minimal ear/mic and no big headphones (I use PC speakers). The included hat clip works very well, and comes with the std. TrackIr 5. It's also very simple to let the TrackIr5 independently bind a centering command, as well as a pause command to my joystick or keyboard. Anyhow, I have not had to dig deep into configuration and customization (fine by me, for now).I had it all setup and was using it flawlessly in-game in about 15 minutes from the time I pulled it out of the box.Great product!(PS: The Elite profile I used was from the Frontier Forums...search for: "Alpha4-TrackIr")5TL;DR: Over priced item for a market with little offeringsSo without going out and making your own, there is really little options in this market. Besides this there is only eye trackers and eBay options to go with. So playing DCS and other flight sims this is really the best option, but with that being said, is way over priced. All this system basically is, is an IR optical sensor that comes standard with a cheap Chinese made stamped piece of metal that is spray painted with some reflective tape that you are forced to wear on a hat under your headset. Look up too far and the brim of your hat starts blocking the top one. They force you to buy their Pro Clip to even get this thing working without it jumping around, which for this price THEY SHOULD INCLUDE. Got a window behind or beside you? Bright lights? Better start wrapping anything that omits light with a blanket. This system probably costs them $30 to make, and maybe $5 for the PRO CLIP, but want you to pay $170+ for the full system, for that it gets 2 stars. The only reason they get sales is because no other company has figured out that they are stupid cheap to make, and you just get some software set you could sell these like hot cakes for $80 and still make money. But like I said, these are really the only thing on the market so you are left with no option.2although the software states that it is plug and play you need to spend a good bit of time setting up your profileThis is definitely a device that you don't know you need until you have it. You will no longer need to take your hands off your hotas, or bind something to be your mouse view, and for games that have interactive cockpits. This is a huge deal as you can look at your cockpit and click the controls with the mouse.A couple of tips for new owners, although the software states that it is plug and play you need to spend a good bit of time setting up your profile, downloading someone else's profile will in all likelihood not work as seat height, sensor distance and angle will vary from person to person. The best thing to do is to load up a profile, get into a game and start tweaking your curves until it does what you want. It probably took me close to 2 weeks to get my profile just right. It's best to not have a window behind it, or use blackout drapes as sunlight will interfere with its tracking.5Game Changer but Only 95% AccurateWorks great with Arma 3 for piloting. Since it is basically a camera combined with an AI algorithm, it does not 100% accurately measure my head s position, but it does come close and definitely adds a valuable new method of view control to the game. The smoothing feature in the TrackIr software adds some latency but increases accuracy. The software has all of the configuration options I would expect, including full editing control over the amplification curves for all 6 axes. I use the basic metal track clip (not the pro) and easily attached it to the top of my headphones with some zip ties works fine and software can t tell the difference. My wife thinks I look like an alien when wearing it, and it makes a satisfying boing sound when you flick it with your finger. The metal clip is of a strong and durable material. Only reason for 4 stars is because it is only 95% or so accurate. This is really a limitation of the technology, not the quality of the product. I wouldn t expect a competing product to be any better. The product is great quality. I think in a few years this will be obsoleted by something better thought. But it IS a game changer and it IS worth the money. Also worth mentioning that I have some weird lights in my kitchen with like xenon or some weird space plasma. Apparently they emit infrared light which screws up the TrackIr (it thinks the light is one of the reflective points on the head clip, causing the output values to go wacky). In the software, you can view the IR camera view and the offending light is in close proximity to my head from the camera s perspective. If I move such that the light is sufficiently far enough away from the line of sight to my head, then the AI in the software is smart enough to ignore the light and properly track my head. Normal light bulbs don t get picked up by the camera so shouldn t be an issue, just these weird xenon bulbs I have, anyways I just turn them off. The camera view in the software makes it easy to debug how well the camera can see you (the 3 points it is tracking show up green and other candidate IR readings that are being ignored show up red). And again, the AI that powers this software is pretty amazing and very 21st century.4Not a cheap investment but an undeniable advantage when flying sims.Plug and play ease of set up. Super easy to get it up and running and it automatically worked for DCS World with no further calibration needed. But it does offer the ability to really tweak the experience if you want. If you adjust your chair, it's very easy to recalibrate the sensor.Requires wearing a hat with a brim while playing, but it tracks brilliantly. A total game changer for flying a combat sim.Downside...the monitor mount doesn't grip my monitor (it's just a standard 23" Dell) so the camera is barely hanging on by it's front legs. I have a solid computer desk but if yours is less stable, it could bump the camera right off. I'd like more of a clip style mount.4I'm Trackin'. You Trackin'?Looking up TrackIR year back, and having used FreeCamNoIR for a while with just a webcam, it was exciting to try out an official TrackIR product. After getting it setup and using it for a while now, here's my takeaway! What You Get: In the package is the TrackIR Camera, a plastic bar made to fit on a baseball cap with the three reflective 'trackers' affixed to it, a small adjustable magnetic mount that you place the TrackIR Camera on and can then place on top of your TV or whatnot, and the usual promotional/instructions paper stuff.Programming: After downloading the drivers and software from TrackIR's website and getting everything plugged in, I gave the software a go. It's a handy tool that lets you preview movement in a 3D sphere and adjust some settings to your liking (turning range/sensitivity). There's profiles you can use or create for more settings, but I haven't done that yet. You might want to look into that first thing, as there's an 'auto-center snap' feature that means when you're looking close to dead-on wherever your center point is, the TrackIR feature won't turn your view until you move far enough outside of the deadzone. The size of the deadzone, for me at least, is small enough that I am at least aware of where my 'center' is at all times, but big enough where it's always a distraction to have my in-game-view suddenly snap whe I don't want it to--or where I have to turn my head further than I normally would, just to 'escape' the deadzone. Take this paragraph for what it's worth in my opinion: software good, but be prepared to look into changing deadzones if that's going to be a distraction for you. However, the head tracking itself is pretty darn good. There's no, or at least, very little latency--your head movement will move your view in real-time, and being able to look around in ARMA or Elite Dangerous is a pretty sweet experience! It is well implemented and functional, and that's definitely a good thing! When it comes to what games are supported, it depends. Obviously, simuation games like ARMA, Flight Simulator X, XPlane, Elite Dangerous etcetera, are going to have built-in support. Getting TrackIR working in those games was as simple as checking a box labeled "Enable TrackIR", and in Elite Dangerous' case TrackIR was working as soon as I started the game. And in ARMA 3, at least, TrackIR movement was interpreted as joystic movement--if that holds true for other games, you could probably use TrackIR inputs for other games as well--but that's just me speculating. All in all, I'm pretty satisfied with this. Fun stuff!5Positive First ImpressionI am writing this review to share my first impressions of the Trackir 5, for anybody researching this product before buying it. Many of the reviews I read were good, but they didn't really convince me to make the purchase with confidence. My advice would be to definitely buy this product! Let me tell you why: First, is the ease of installation and set-up. All you do is download and install the software from the Trackir website, (It takes approximately 2 minutes), then plug the camera in to a USB port on your computer, and you're good to go. Second, it really works! I was concerned that it had a limited range, because the instructions said 2 to 5 feet was ideal. I sit between 8 and 9 feet from were I placed the camera, and it works flawlessly. I jumped right in to DCS flight sim, and was very impressed with the default settings. I used the software they gave me to easily create a custom profile that improved the sensivity and range of motion. It made the tracking so smooth and natural that I forgot I was using it. It's amazing how much it improves the flying experience. I highly recommend this to anybody who enjoys flight sims, or any game that uses the POV hat button. My only regret is I didn't buy this sooner.5Definite Game-Changer for Flight-SimmingAs another reviewer wrote below, TrackIR is a game-changer if you do any kind of flight-simming. I use it exclusively for DCS World and some X-Plane and it's the best you're gonna get without investing in some clunky VR headgear. It works as anticipated and adds quite a bit of environmental awareness in the cockpit. The software portion of the product lets you fine-tune the headset, which is a must, but once you're set, you're all ready to go.I went with the slightly cheaper head-clip version, which simply slides onto the brim of a baseball cap (the clip is quite delicate as people have said, thin plastic and what not). Three reflective tape surfaces from your brim deliver the movements to the actual IR receiver, which loosely clasps to the top of your monitor. That's it! I have the TrackIR software running before I start DCS - neither software has had an issue with the other.I was up and running (including fine-tuning) within the hour and was immediately amazed at how quickly it changed my flying. I'm not relying on external views in DCS for landing much anymore - it's all in-cockpit - which says a lot of how much the headgear really adds.So ya, highly recommended if you do any serious flying at your computer and have the money to spare.5Upgrading from TrackIR 3 to TrackIR 5Update 13 Feb 2020: Now that I've used this a while, I can say that TrackIR 5 is easier to get confused, compared to TrackIR 3. For example, even if I lift my hand to scratch my nose, the tracking will go crazy cuz of the light relfected off my watch glass. I don't know if it'll go crazy for people wearing prescription glasses though, I don't wear them while gaming. For TrackIR 3, I can do that without breaking the track. I can even puff on a cigarette with a long drag (lighting up the end) and it still wouldn't break the track. For TrackIR 5, the track would go crazy.Original review:============Actually my old TrackIR 3 (circa 2002) still works. I purchased this TrackIR 5 because some games I have do not register my TrackIR 3 as a head-tracker. Apparently the devs assumed everyone has a TrackIR 4 or newer. My first disappointment - old TrackIR software (v3.xx. v4.xx) doesn't work on it. I was kind of hoping it would (cuz I wanted to track with only 1 dot on my gaming goggles), but it doesn't. The newer TrackIR v5.xxx software doesn't detect my old TrackIR 3 (previously tested a few years ago), and it needs 3 dots to track. So, TrackIR 5 needed v5.xx software to run.Setup was a little different, but easily and quickly done. I quickly set up a profile for Eurotruck and tested - works fine. I am so used to TrackIR 3 (Pitch and Yaw ONLY) that on the new TrackIR 5, I disabled roll, X and Y axis. I kept Z on, cuz it's cool to be able to "lean into the screen" to see something up close. So yeah, right now I'm on Pitch, Yaw, and leaning forwards/backwards. X and Y are practically useless to me - I wouldn't suddenly want to stand up or squat down when gaming (up and down, Y axis) and I wouldn't be dancing or doing any side slides (left/right slide, X axis). As for ROLL, well, I'd rather not turn the screen topsy-turvy during gaming. To my slight amazement, TrackIR 5 is felt SMOOTHER than the old TrackIR 3. I didn't notice it at first as I'm used to how TrackIR works. But after playing Eurotruck on the new TrackIR 5, going back to the TrackIR 3, it felt... laggy. Kind of like when you're used to a 144hz monitor and you go back to a standard 60Hz monitor. Yeah, like that. I don't know if it's the USB or the hardware inside the tracker but it felt smoother to me.All in all, a good upgrade for me, almost 18 years later.4
